Face and Body Scanning / Re: Continuous Lighting for full body capture
« on: August 23, 2014, 12:50:08 AM »
Hello!

You should not try to trigger thru Smart Shooter since it sends the signal thru USB, use the shutter release ports on the cameras and use either corded or wireless remote.

There are a few ways to set the delay on the flash so that you can capture it even if the cameras are out of sync.

You could use the PocketWizard MultiMax http://www.pocketwizard.com/products/transmitter_receiver/multimax/
Quote
Precision Delay Times
Custom set in transmit mode for remote units and/or port 2 on the MultiMAX.  In receiver mode, precision delay offers delay sequencing or camera/flash synchronization.

You can use strobes that has such capability (Elinchrom strobes for example can be set at different delays, other brands might too).

You can use a device such as Multiflash Plus (this is what I use) http://www.techphotoblog.com/tpb-66/

If you have a speedlite you can set it to rear curtain sync and use it on one camera (set at a shorter shutter say 1/25th or so and the other cameras at 1/8th or so) and trigger other strobes by its light.

These are some ways to do it.

I've mixed Canon 100D, 1100D, 600D and Nikon D3200 in a rig without issue.

Best, Magnus.

Hello Claude!

Don't be afraid of the kit lenses ;) If you shoot at higher F stops they are great (have a look at this thread were this is currently talked about http://www.agisoft.ru/forum/index.php?topic=2707.0). The 50mm is a great choice though.

Otherwise I have no particular advice, except maybe check out the 1200D. I myself have no experience with it but it seems a bit interesting (we own Canon 1100D, 100D, 600D and Nikon D3200).

Feel free to ask anything else though, I'll try to help.

Best, Magnus.

Hello!

I think Lee/Infinite is your man. http://ir-ltd.net/

Hello Leo!

Yes I will follow this with great interest, hehe.

Here is an example btw of what we had in mind https://www.dropbox.com/s/hdp0n7lbywmwadv/140820_Print_Example_01.jpg
This was just a testsample and is not the best quality though (Frosted Ultra Detail from Shapeways).

Hello Claude!

I'd say that either of them would be an excellent choice.
I don't think the images should be much (any?) different at all. Big thing that 600D got over the 100D I'd say is the flipscreen which can be useful but I would take the 100D due to weight (407g vs 560g with battery and memorycard) and formfactor (I intended to have a potentially portable rig though so that is my preference).
I don't think the prices are much different (atleast they are not here where I am) and the 100D comes with the STM kit lens which is supposed to be quite good.

Hello Leo!

You might have already seen this in your search but thought I'd post here anyway http://www.exprodirect.com/product.php?productid=41824&cat=14065&page=1 or this http://www.exprodirect.com/product.php?productid=42656&cat=14065&page=1

Or maybe just this part http://www.exprodirect.com/product.php?productid=41823&cat=14065&page=1 in case you want to do your own wiring.

Not sure if that is affected by the firmware updates though so might have to ask them.

Best, Magnus.

Hello Leo!

The reason was that we had intended not to print in Color Sandstone but print the heads without color in the highest quality we could (we were looking at the Envisiontec printers among others). So we would have needed the hair to look very good and look like it was sculptured. This turned out to be very expensive to get done (several 100s of dollars per hairdo), or if we would do it too timeconsuming, so we abandoned the idea.

Hello!

I think what should also be taken into consideration is what workflow you will be using and what objects/subjects you will be photographing.
For example if you are intending to process at Ultra High, if you choose JPEG or raw workflow, what F stops you will be working at.
For generating the mesh I do not think the lens should matter that much unless you process at Ultra High (if I recall correctly High is processing the images at 50% scale).

We have had great results with just the standard 18-55mm kit lenses (head scans, over f11, raw, processing at High, textures 4-8k+) I think it is a good idea to try them first and they come basically for free.

We have actually used the 1100Ds a lot and even with them you can get great results though my favorite is the 100D.

Also, if you are in the US there are places like lensrental where you can rent gear to try out.

For general photography I cannot agree more with nadar though, the glass is IMO the most important thing (we have lots of L glass and they are lovely, hehe)

Best, Magnus.

Hello!

Thank you so much for posting this! For me this is an extremely exciting thing since hair was the reason I postponed scanning for regular consumers.

Face and Body Scanning / Re: LED arrays
« on: April 30, 2014, 04:10:01 AM »
Hello Mfranquelo!

I have done some experimenting with LEDs but mostly for use with continuous lighting (brightness is a problem in lots of different ways, hehe). One can ofcourse use PS with smaller chip cameras.

Recently I have used these lights http://www.leds.de/en/LED-strips-modules-oxid-oxid-oxid-oxid-oxid/LED-matrix/Power-BacklightMatrix-290x203-70-Nichia-LEDs-white.html.
A benefit of those (also true for led strips as Eildosa mentioned) is that they usually do not require any additional cooling. Since you will pulse them it might not be an issue at all though.

Those LED panels (in a row so not optimal, have it setup like that now, sorry) gives me:

f2.84 with one
f4.01 with two
f4.07 with three
f5.6 with four

All 1/60th, ISO100 and 60 cm away (Sekonic lightmeter).

The user mala here might be someone to ask since he has experience in LEDs.

It will be interesting to follow this.

Eildosa, can you share some more info about your setup?

Best, Magnus.

Hello yet again!

I added another image to the folder that shows one way to get a more complete result with really tough hairstyles.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/il7pod5ci24m5ft/140428_PS_Hair_02.jpg

As you might be able to tell in the image on the right the hair was roughed up a bit. On the left is a Dense Cloud at Low setting and the middle is at High.
We had some thoughts about doing different reconstructions for face (High) and hair (lower quality) and combine them but it is too much work and still problematic with some hair.

Best, Magnus.

Hello again!

I uploaded a raw model from some of our testing to my Dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xdx4dmiwz4s7h25/xI7Cu7D2DF I had to decimate it down a bit but it might give some idea.
This was pretty zoomed out but a problem with hair is the more detail the more noise and areas that fall apart.
There was not coverage from below in front or on the back of head.
Note on the parting of the hair where it gets especially noisy and also on the front where the background shines thru the hair on some places.
In the picture you can see what happens with shorter hair, it can become quit a mess, hehe.

Best, Magnus.

Hello again Brian!

I will see if I can find some good examples.
Have a look at Infinite/Lee's Triplegangers site http://www.triplegangers.com/ (some nudity). If you check the sample images on the scans (there are some raw ones too) you can maybe start to get some idea of the issues one might encounter.
What kind of print output had you planned on targeting btw?

Best, Magnus.

Hello Brian!

The caps are as far as I know used by many because the hair will be done afterwards depending on the application.

For printing it depends on what the target-resolution is.
You would need to be careful about the hairstyles, thin and stray hair for example is very tough, if not impossible.
You can get decent results but there will most likely be a lot of clean-up involved (=high cost).

Hair is in my opinion one of the trickiest things to get right and too big of a variable for me to feel comfortable about.
It was the reason we decided to hold off on 3D-printing headscans until we can find a fast, workable solution. This is ofcourse dependent on how much time you can spend per scan and qualitydemands.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the needs for coverage can increase a lot if you have to cover the full top of the head too.

Best, Magnus.

Hello!

360, can you describe a bit about how you have the cameras and lights set up? Maybe a screencap from PS? What type of cameras are they?

Best, Magnus.
