Importance of Background in Mapping Foreground Object?
« on: July 30, 2011, 12:18:20 AM »
Brand new user of PhotoScan here. Forgive me if this question reeks of noobosity.

I plan to take a series of photos in cramped quarters where I may be forced to park my tripod in one spot and rotate the subject as I take a full set of shots. In this case the background in each shot will be identical. Will this create problems for PhotoScan in calculating camera positions, etc.? I'm thinking a shallow depth of field so that there is little detail in the background is preferable, but I really have no idea.

Hello Tavarino,

You can mask inwanted background area to prevent PhotoScan taking it into account.
Masking is available from Photo view (double-click on any photo to swith to this view). And after you have applied mask to every image you want just tick on check-box "Constrain features by mask" in "Align photos" dialog.

Thank you, Alexey, for the prompt response. I'll be giving it a test run tomorrow.
