Title: Higher Mp photos any beneficial ?
Post by: nmut94 on April 19, 2021, 04:08:20 AM
Hi All,

Please comment if you have had experience with using high megapixel photos.

I currently use a Sony A6000 with 24 Mp sensor. My work usually is around recording as-is condition of components on industrial site and using them for measurements, profile extractions and periodic assessments. Critical locations involve having grooves with less lighting, usually ends up with a lot of noise.

I usually take around 150-250 photos, standing at about 1-2m from the object using a 35mm or 50mm lens. The object size is about 3m x 2m x 0.5 m

I usually get an accuracy of about  0.7mm with custom scale bars accurate to 0.05 mm

For processing, I use dual 24-core CPU with two 2080-Ti with 128gb ram.

The major question I have got at the moment is
" DOES HIGH MEGAPIXEL PHOTOS WITH A BETTER CAMERA (A7R iii, 48Mp) MAKES SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE AT REDUCING NOISE, ESPECIALLY INSIDE GROoVES AND WOULD IT IMPROVE THE ACCURACY TO ABOUT 0.1MM? "

Thanks

I would suggest standing a lot closer and covering the object in small sections. I expect that will be more beneficial than increasing the MP count.
