In one of the threads in the general forum we discussed a Professional "Artist" Edition of Photoscan. I want to put it here to see if more users agree.
A lot of us artists would love to use the phyton scripting and "Optimize Alignment" tools in the Professional edition, but we cannot justify the 3400$ pricetag for just these 2 features.
I think a lot of artists would be more than happy to pay (for example) 750$ for a version of Photoscan Professional that is stripped of all the aerial photography features that we never need (DEMs, Georeferencing, Multispectral imagery processing, etc).
-
Hello marcel,
We've seen the suggestion in that topic. Is Optimization feature the only needed from Pro edition?
-
Hi Alexey,
I think most users would be interested in:
- Optimize Alignment
- phyton scripting
- markers (for automatically scaling and orienting a model)
But I don't have a Professional license myself, so I would not know for sure what other Pro features might be helpful for artists.
(I've mentioned this before, but in my opinion Optimize Alignment should included in the Regular version of Photoscan as well, because an accurate alignment is the basis of a good scan.).
-
please, please, do this option. i would appreciate this kind of upgrade, since this is be exactly how i currently use photoscan, creating art works. all three functions marcel mentioned..
thanks. c.

+1 - phyton scripting
-
+1
I'd just be happy spending the extra dollars for the ability to orient and scale my model correctly.
-
Yes for sure markers should be included in a basic version
-
+10 Yes, this would be a great option. I would say that model orientation should be included at all levels though. Python definitely is an optional feature and would make sense in a $750 version. Pretty much all softwares I deal with (I'm in visual effects) includes a scripting language of some kind.
-
+11 :)

Definitely interested. Already a pro user, heavily use markers, optimisation and python, but nothing beyond that - yet. No need for orthophoto export for example, or geographic coordinates (as opposed to local coordinates, which I do use). Need to get a few more members of staff on board in the office and that kind of price and functionality would be very appealing for any additional licenses.
-
Hi to all,
I'm really interested too, I have a standard edition and python script, more alignement possibilities and markers could be wonderful.
:)
-
I would be interested as well.
-
Very interested here also specially on the Optimize alignment option.
Thanks.

+2 - python scripting
+1 - markers
-
+1 with normal median denoising :)
-
a 'middle ground' version that does away with the special needs of aerial photogrammetry would be very useful indeed!
-
+1 markers ;D
-
I am in total agreement with this as well and had planned to suggest the exact same thing (until I saw this thread). For usage in the creative/vfx industries most of the "Pro" features are not something we need and the $3500 price tag is just too high. This is why a lot of people end up with the Standard version even though we would be willing to pay more for the features we actually do need.
-
I would really like a version such as this too !
-
+1 absolutely
I think a lot of us are trying to 'make do' with the standard edition, but would happily pay a reasonable premium for these extra features that would bridge the gap between the Pro version. Marcel's description of the three key features and example pricing seem right on the mark.
Thanks, -Chad
-
- Optimize Alignment
- phyton scripting
- markers (for automatically scaling and orienting a model)
+1 to all three features
-
+1 plus a noise reduction algorithm ::)
Bilateral gaussian, local statistics, median or Lo minimization any of those would be amazing!
Cheers,
Manuel.
-
I would purchase a version priced mid-way between the Standard version and Pro version which had:
- optimization
- markers
- Python scripting
-
+1 for python, markers and optimization
-
Python scripting is a must for me....
-
It appears quite a few users would like to purchase this proposed alternative version, with a relative consensus on features...Siggraph is coming up soon, good time for an announcement? ;-)

Yes, That's a pity :/ I hope Agisoft will take an action soon..
-
+2 markers (for scaling / orientation / manual alignment)
+1 denoising feature
-
+5 YES!! Artist Edition sounds perfect!
-
...and after more than a month of suggestion...? an official answer will be really apreciated from the Agisoft stuff...
thanks in advance

Hello all,
It seems that too little difference has left between proposed Artist and current Professional editions for quite a huge gap in price. So currently, at least for the nearest future, we do not see the possibility for releasing the new edition.
However, the functionality of Standard edition may be extended by few minor features.
-

:( :(
-
Guys, be happy that AGI team at least think about this possibility and reply officially to this, other companies would not even comment on this stuff. For now its no go, but later, who know :-D
-
Agreed, it is great that Alexey and team are open to discussion on this and many other subjects in the forums. It is rare to see, and much appreciated.
However, it is still a disappointment to be left with the same options.
I think what makes it difficult is the vast price differential between the two versions of software. I can completely understand not wanting to cannibalize sales of your premium level product by not having enough feature separation between the two versions. But I don't think I have ever seen a larger difference in prices between a 'basic' and 'premium' version of software. It is a nearly 2000% price increase.
The pro version has some fairly important features (as indicated in this thread) to people who are working to create digital assets (games, cultural heritage, etc). Yet the price is much higher than other prices of software that are normally in the asset building pipeline (Zbrush, Mudbox, 3DCoat, etc). I understand that I am sort of talking 'apples and oranges' here, and that in the area of digital acquisition (laser scanners, structured light scanners, etc) the pricing for tools in that pipeline run much higher (and even far beyond the PS pro price).
I guess for many of us, we are just hoping there is some solution that can help bridge the gap.
Cheers, -C

I totally agree with chadfx.
-
Yes, Alexey sounds right. although , al least python scripting :(((
-
Why dont we do a vote between the 5 most wanted features mentioned in this thread and decide that way which one is the one most needed?
(as far a AGI team agrees that they can implement any 1 of those features in a "artist" level software of course)
Leo
-
yes, please.
-
- Optimize Alignment +1
- markers (for automatically scaling and orienting a model) +1
-
#1. Optimize Alignment
#2. Markers
I understand the hesitation to "eat your young" by adding an intermediate edition, but I suspect there are a LOT of users like myself who are happy to pay some extra $$ for needed features but will probably never in a million years be able to justify the cost of the Professional edition. This is untapped revenue.

I agree with Alexey's assessment.
If there was a cheaper edition with markers and optimization it would be easy to use it and another 3D program to generate ortho images. That would be lost revenue.
I also think that at $179, the standard edition is a steal for what it does.
-
Hello all,
PhotoScan Standard starting from version 1.1 build 1985 has Optimize Camera Alignment option.
-
AWESOME!!!!! Thank you Alexey and Photoscan team!! ;)
-
After a little searching I have found it now under "tools".
Great! Thank you Dmitiri (the main man in the background), Alexey and all others from Agisoft team! :D
-
Hello Kiesel,
In Standard edition it is now accessible from Tools menu and also from the Workspace pane context menu after right-clicking on chunks' label in the Process sub-menu. In Professional edition in addition to these option Optimize button also remain in the Reference (former Ground Control) pane.
-
Thank you again Alexey, I was indeed looking for an "Optimize Button" before I found it in the "Tools Menu".
Tiny suggestion: Could there please a little warning if a point cloud or/and mesh exists that the optimizing will erase both?

(Nov 14) Honestly, I would just be thrilled to not have to 'flip/re-orientate' my models every time! ( I am new here so I am sorry in advance if I have not located the solution to this problem yet.)

Where do i find the downloadlink for Agisoft Standard v1.1 build 1985 ?
I want to test the new implemented optimize camera alignment!!!
Thank you for this feature Agisoft!
best regards
munch

Hello Munch,
Pre-release thread is in General section: http://www.agisoft.com/forum/index.php?topic=2883.0.
It is build 1998 already.
-
downloading... :)
Thank you!!!
-
I would be happy if standard version would have the GPS Georef Option activated... that would be great to use Standard for first processing in the field bevor switching over to the Agisoft Pro, wich we already own

I will try with this later. :o :o :o

This is a really good Idea and I would pay happily 700-900$ for an Artist Version. The Current price gap between Standard and Pro is much to high. A very important feature for the Artist Version would also be delighting. That feature I would pay alone a couple hundreds $.
I can just not justify the Pro Version as I use Agisoft not as Frequent as a proffesional Geo meassurement company or so. As a 3D Artist or Studio you need Photogrammetry from time to time but not Daily. An Artist Version with the Features aimed only for 3D Asset creation is highly demanded.
-
Agreed
-
I think this is a great idea. I have no use for any of the UAV features because I'm only interested in modeling architecture and sculpture. I'd also like to see the new de-lighting feature added. I certainly can't afford the pro version of PS as it currently stands, as much as I think it is a fantastic product.
-
I just downloaded and tested out the Pro version for the new delighting feature and would love to see this added to an in between version. Standard is incredibly affordable but the $3k pricetag on the pro version is a tough sell for one feature :)
-
Hey, so I am also in favor of an intermediate version, targeted to artists/game devs, the price gap between the two existing versions is so considerable. Basically we need to be able to create game assets with all the tools it takes. We don't care about DEM and super advanced features, but things like markers are definitely needed and probably a few others.
-
- Optimize Alignment
- phyton scripting
- markers (for automatically scaling and orienting a model)
and delighting
For me, hands down the most necessary feature (else I go to unity or wait for CapturingReality to implement it)
Optimize Alignment and markers also of interest, but not so critical for my purposes.
If the question is, would I be willing to pay more, I definitely would, though I would hope for more moderate increase - ie. ~ 300.
-
delighting feature, yes please, even with a moderate increase in price!
-
An artist edition with python scripting or allowing python scripting in the standard edition would be the dream
