Title: Best GPU for PhotoScan With Highest Overall Performance
Post by: ZigZag Man on March 19, 2015, 07:02:49 PM
Hi all.

I'm building a new workstation for Agisoft PhotoScan jobs. Budget is not an issue at the moment. The most important thing is performance.

Most of the specs are pretty much clear but there is still uncertainty about what GPU to use.
The nominees are (as single GPU or in multi GPU build):
GTX 970
GTX 980
GTX Titan
Quadro (of some model)
Tesla (of some model)
Intel Phi (of some model)
R9 290X
FirePro (of some model)

I know that pretty much covers all available options, but it's because I couldn't find any conclusive results, benchmarks or discussions and I want to gather all answers in one place.

Thanks in advance :)

Wait for the new Titan X, I have a feeling this will be the best card for the money.

I have 1 on order so ill update the benchmark thread once it arrives:

Another possible one (even though it is getting old slowly ;) is the one I bought, AMD HD 7990 (2 HD 7970 in a single card). It did pretty good on the building test I just ran.
It is going as strong as the Titan X (actually slightly faster).
Device 1 performance: 192.642 million samples/sec (CPU)
Device 2 performance: 869.168 million samples/sec (Tahiti)  (1 half of the card)
Device 3 performance: 847.02 million samples/sec (Tahiti)    (the other half of the card)
Total performance: 1908.83 million samples/sec

So the actual card itself did 1716 million samples/sec

The only problem is that it is pretty thick so even though you can place 2 cards next to each other, there will be almost no space for ventilation on 1 of them.

Best performance i would say is Titan X right now.  I have 2 of them.  Bought them for other rendering applications really.  Price - Performance wise Titan X is probably not the best choice though but if you want the best possible performance they deliver.   They only draw 250W.  I run 2 in SLI using only a 750W PSU.  They can also be over clocked quite a bit.  Make sure you have a well ventilated case if running 2.

Single Titan X on the building test images

Finished depth reconstruction in 541.615 seconds
Device 1 performance: 1534.46 million samples/sec (GeForce GTX TITAN X)
Total performance: 1534.46 million samples/sec

Another possibility would be the new GTX 980 Ti that came out a few weeks ago. It seems to have pretty much the same performance of the Titan X and it is cheaper, around $650.
