Title: How to fill holes and build accurate textures
Post by: flite on December 26, 2015, 12:34:39 PM
Was hoping I could get some of the veterans to chime in and hopefully point me in the right direction as I’ve currently hit a wall… I’m new to PhotoScan and photogrammetry in general and have just been watching tutorials and digging through the forums to get by.

I am seeking assistance in how to realistically ‘plug’ holes in a model and have them covered with an accurate texture.  I am working with a medium sized sculpture/bowl that is about 16” x 14”.  All has gone very well except the interior cavity (at the very bottom) of the bowl has a decent sized hole.  The dense cloud looks great except for this one area where data points are missing.  I have taken many excellent photos of the subject from every conceivable angle at 15 degree increments.  This portion of the bowl is indeed captured in several photos so I know it is not the quality of the photography that is the issue.  Everything is sharp, properly exposed, etc.  It could be though that there isn’t enough data (unique markings) there for the software to ‘bite’ on to and it is having a difficult time finding points to match, but I really think there should be enough info there as it did an excellent job of capturing the opposite side of the opening which looks exactly the same.

I experimented with creating meshes with both the default as well as extrapolated settings and of course when extrapolated was selected PhotoScan crudely plugged up the hole and it didn't look good.  With the default setting used though the hole was still present.  So I exported that mesh, imported into MeshMixer, did a passable job of filling the opening, and then imported back into PhotoScan to proceed with building a texture.  While the hole is now plugged, the texture is just a solid color and is obviously way off...

Could I please hear your thoughts on what a proper workflow for handling such an issue would be?  Do I need to somehow set markers manually on the area and try again?  Perhaps boost contrast or exposure of just the interior cavity so the software has an easier time seeing it?  Would really appreciate some guidance or recommendations on procedures/software to tackle this issue.  Thanks.

A lot will depend on the detail in the images as far as creating a mesh is concerned.  For hole filling I usually export the mesh, fill the holes in another program, e.g. Meshmixer or ZBrush and then import back into Photoscan to create the texture.
