Title: Upgrading for speed
Post by: rbnkc on June 17, 2016, 06:45:53 PM
It’s clear from my growing experience that I need to upgrade my system to get processing results in a reasonable amount of time. I’m currently using a windows system with an i5-4690k @ 3.5ghz with 16gb of memory and an AMD R9 290 graphics card. Increasing memory to 32gb is a must, but which would give me a better performance boost, adding another graphics card or replacing the CPU with say an i7-4790 4ghz.

Hello rbnkc,

I'd rather suggest to choose 6-core CPU like 4930K or 4960X.

Thanks Alexey,
Right now I'm limited by an LGA 1150 socket and I don't see any chips greater than 4-core for that socket. With a new motherboard (LGA 2011-3) I can get an I-7 6950X which has 10 cores and evidently overclocks quite well. Would PS take advantage of 10 cores over 6?

Hello rbnkc,

Then you should probably check i7 5930K or i7 5960X, as I don't think the performance of 10 over 8 cores will worth the price difference compared to the latest series.
