Title: Ring flash / light
Post by: t234594 on October 28, 2016, 06:37:00 AM
Hi,

What ring flash/lights are people using for photogrammetry? Which models/suppliers do you recommend?

We are looking at scanning smaller objects as well as larger rooms.

Thanks everyone for their input!

There is a very nice fairly affordable chinese ring diffusor on the market thats foldable, but the build quality leaves much to be desired, and its to weak for my use with one of my Nikon SB800 flashes. Very nice for macro work though. https://www.amazon.com/RoundFlash-Universal-Collapsible-Magnetic-Diffuser/dp/B00NQ6UT4W (https://www.amazon.com/RoundFlash-Universal-Collapsible-Magnetic-Diffuser/dp/B00NQ6UT4W)

I have found the round flash above very useful and effective, but you have to take into account the additional cost of a speedlite to make it work if you don't have one already. It's true it's not really robust enough for very heavy use (i think it was this one that i got https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magnetic-Black-Diffuser-Mobile-Softbox/... (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magnetic-Black-Diffuser-Mobile-Softbox/dp/B00J7ZC7Q4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1477661251&sr=8-2&keywords=roundflash+45cm)), but for occasional careful use it seems great. I expect the original from roundflash.com (http://roundflash.com) are much better quality.

I used it to get nice uniform illumination of a shiny/metallic statue here https://skfb.ly/MMTV (https://skfb.ly/MMTV)

I was using Nikon D90 with SB600 and either 35mm or 50mm lens.

The source photos looked mostly like the attached.
