Hi All,
I have noticed that for large dense point clouds;
a) The project is very slow to save if the point cloud has been modified using the Select Points by Color tool, followed by the Assign Class tool
b) The project saves at normal speeds if the point cloud edited manually, say using the Free-Form Selection tool followed by the Assign Class tool
c) The Select Points by Color tool does not complete if it is used a second time. The user must save the project, restart photoscan & reload project for successful operation.
This has been observed at least since version 1.3.5
Machine spec
Photoscan Pro Version 1.4.2 Build 6204 (64 Bit)
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X
128GB RAM
Windows 10 Pro x64
2x NVIDIA GeoForce GTX 1080 Ti

Hello Stu,
How many points are there in the dense cloud? And are there any unusual messages in the Console pane when you follow the problematic workflow?
-
Hi Alexey,
Sorry for the delay in response. I have a point cloud with approx 2 billion points. When performing manual edits or ground classification, the point cloud saves quite rapidly, certainly within minutes. However it is taking many hours to save the point cloud when the Select Points by Color, followed by assign class tool. My current point cloud has been sitting on 0% saving for 12.5 hours so far... It will get there.
The point cloud is on NAS device, the machine is using < 4% CPU resources and 1GB of RAM. There is no network traffic reported by the Photoscan process.
Regards,
Stu Paisley.

Same exact problem. The first iteration of select by color executes in seconds. Another iteration, or save, or other function is disfunctionally slow.
-
The same problem is happining here...

Same here

Can you please confirm that the issue is observed in the version 1.4.4?
Please also specify, if PSZ or PSX project format is used? We are still not able to reproduce the problem following the suggested steps.
-
1.4.4 and PSX here and a merged chunk ( 7xx photos, some markers, about 360.000.000 points dense cloud)
Tools -> Dense Cloud -> Select points by color
- The first selection work fast and fine
- delete selected points
- from this point
- the view is getting slower ( I can see the cloud loding / building) after every movement / rotation
- I can't save anymore
- I can't do any further filtering
- I can't cancel running commands
- 25 % CPU, 0% GPU, 0% hard disc, normal RAM

Hello Micha,
Do you have "enable VBO support" option enabled or disabled in the Advanced preferences tab? And can you please also provide the starting lines from the Console pane that are displayed right after the new PhotoScan instance is opened?
-

I am trying to use the dense cloud classification by colour tool. It has previously worked well but is no longer working efficiently. I am using metashape 1.5.0 and find that I can select by colour one time and it works really well. If I then assign the class to the points and try to save the file or make another selection the computer takes many hours to select another point or to save.
Could there be a memory allocation issue with this process?? I have tried it on two seperate computers and had the exact same experience. This is hindering my workflow severely.

Hello Matt,
I have merged your topic to this thread, as it seems to be the same issue.
The strange thing is that we are not able to reproduce the issue on any test configuration, even trying different OS, GPU, projects.
-
Is this issue observed only when the project is accessed via network, or it also happens with the locally stored projects?
Also do we get it correct, that after the saving operation is completed (that may take long time depending the number of points in the cloud) these selection issues are observed?
-
The issue is only observed for locally stored projects – we only run locally and don’t process over a network.
The problem is this - if we select points by colour once only, the process is fast (ie it takes several minutes only). If we reset the selection and then select by colour again it is also fast however if we assign a class to the selected points and then try to select by colour another time the process takes many hours. Saving the project is also very slow after assigning the class.
An example of the workflow is as follows
1. Select points by colour (takes 2 to 3 mins)
2. Reset selection
3. Select points by colour (takes 2 to 3 mins)
4. Assign class to points
5. Reset selection
6. Select points by colour (takes up to several hours)
I have tried this same workflow on multiple jobs on multiple computers (high spec PCs with GPUs and plenty of RAM etc) and get the same result.
Displaying the point cloud is also much slower after assigning a class to the points. The project is very smooth to work with before assigning a class but once the class is assigned the dense cloud is very slow to navigate and load.

Can you please check if the same workflow is faster now in Metashape 1.5.1 build 7618?
