Title: Pc Build Help
Post by: Lagine77 on October 13, 2018, 09:47:18 AM
hello guys, im kinda bit frustrated from the reviews about agisoft using the processor TR 2990wx, i was wondering if someone could help me, i wanted to know if that processor (2990wx) is optimized for agisoft, since i wanted to build one first before buying agisoft, i assumed that for the project im working on right now, ill have around 10,000+ photos to be processed, i used drone deploy to see how many images ill gather on my project, this is the build i was thinking of building
Amd Threadripper 2990wx
128gb ddr4 ram
gtx1080ti

is this enough? and will it process faster since it has 32 cores/64 threads? thanks in advance

I am wondering the same as I consider buying the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX

When configuring my workstation I was also considering the TR 2990WX.
However, due to the memory management, the 32 cores don't scale well with all applications, sometimes there is even a performance penalty.

I therefore chose the 16 core 2950X and am absolutely satisfied: it also has great single core performance (useful in many other applications surrounding photogrammetry, i.e. RAW image processing, point cloud editing etc.).

Currently there are also other top CPUs for photogrammetry (such as the i9 9900K), but they don't have the 3d rendering performance of 16 or 32 core TRs and they "only" support 64 GB RAM.

Here's a bench mark overview: https://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU-2019/2260 (https://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU-2019/2260) (which is based on the older Photoscan 1.3.3 version).

In terms of performance/price ratio AMD Threadripper 2950x may be a better option, however, if the available funds are not limited, you can consider Intel i9-9980XE.

I am in process of building new photogrammetry PC, and i got confused with some contradicting info regarding AMD TR2 2950X. Two trusted cources present completely oposite conclusions on performance difference between 2950X and Intel i9-9700K/9900K and 7980XE/9980XE.

Would you be so kind to clarify is AMD TR2 2950X expected to perform  faster or slower then i9-9700K/9900K in real world scenarios (assuming larger sets of pictures in Arbittrary mode)?
