General / Re: Disable mesh interpolation from laser scan point cloud

Using separate scan point clouds did not improve the overall results compared to a the combined version I used previously.
Interpolation set to "Disabled" results in an interpolated mesh so it appears unrelated to the point cloud(s).

I'm going to try PTX files with the separate scans (setups) instead of PTS.  It appears Metashape does not recognize multiple scans (setups) that are contained within a single PTX file.
We'll see how that goes and report back.

General / Disable mesh interpolation from laser scan point cloud
« on: December 06, 2023, 07:17:21 PM »
Hi All,

I am building a mesh from an imported PTS file captured with a TLS

Curiously, I get interpolation in the mesh even when interpolation is Disabled.
So the result is exactly the same whether interpolation is Enabled or Disabled.

Is there another setting somewhere to ensure that no interpolation is used to build the mesh?

Thanks

Version 2.0.3 Build 16960

This really depends on the existing topology.
Assuming its possible to create a closed perimeter for a base, extrude or loft could work.

Are you able to post a link to the file?

The texture mapping from Metashape is a texture atlas, which breaks the mesh surfaces into multiple smaller areas with corresponding small areas of the photo imagery for efficiency.
You would not be able to simply substitute a new texture map.

To accomplish what you want you would need to define new UV mapping, and you would have to determine a mapping method that will not distort the grid in the new texture.
Its possible this could be done in Blender or a similar app, but it is a non trivial process.

Hopefully others here can further clarify this as texture mapping is not my expertise.
At a mimimum, I think you would need to allocate a significant amount of time into defining a workflow and learning to use the tools that will accomplish what you want. And then there's the time you would spend actually doing the work.

You may not need a CAD model to do a comparison.

CloudCompare can do deviation comparison from point clouds or meshes.
The CAD model would need to be converted to a mesh because CloudCompare does not accept CAD formats.
A quick way to get a mesh would be to export from AutoCAD to an STL.

If the camerars are all parallel I suspect that the effect is because the camera positions are observed from multiple locations.
Ideally, the cameras would be facing approx. normal to the wall of the passage, rather than all facing down the length of the passage.

There are dark or low light areas in many of the images circled below although I don't think this is entirely the problem as you show you are getting some points
The stone appears to be somewhat translucent ... I think I see subsurface scattering in at least one image?

Do you use RAW images ... the extra few bits of image data can help.

More than likely there a few factors contributing to the problem.

... lighting is always good.

The lighting appears fairly inconsistent from the images you have provided. You may wish to consider using supplemental lighting to improve results.

Steve,

I don't think you will get any direct or meaningful feedback without some example pictures.

Can you post some of your photos ... the files as they were saved from the camera?

Are you using raw images?

The image format is .jpeg caputred with the minimal amount of compression. There is no image manipulation / processing prior to loading into chunks in Metashape. ISO = 100 and the aperature and shutter speed are locked between photographs.

It appears raw is an option, at least in the hardware spec. I don't know that getting maybe 11 or 12 bits / channel instead of 8 will make any difference here though.

Hi Eichhorn,

Are you using raw images?

I threw out the 2 images that had the 180 deg rotation and there is still significant warping, so the lens specs may not be interpreted correctly from the images.
There is no EXIF data recorded with the image for comparison.

You probably will need to know the spec on the camera lens and use the AGIsoft Lens application (Tools menu) to do the calibration. I don't have any experience with calibrating the lens by this method so perhaps someone else could jump in here.

I understand these cameras were relatively low cost as they came with a video surveillance system, however, I think you would have a greater opportunity for a quality result with a different camera system.
