Did you set Raster transform to Palette on export?

The default is none - and this may be causing the issues you describe.

I've also been running Optimise Cameras afterwards... Is this needed?

Yes...but the primary advantages of accuracy and the outputs used to measure the changes recursive optimisation brings can only be fully realised and exploited in the Professional version.

For representative shape models the Std version creates I think it's of limited value - unless anyone knows differently?

I saw your 'scuba human for scale' sub model.  Works great!

Its a singular, recognised unit - "human" - that most can relate to.

The vis in that manta video was the kind of conditions we dream of here in the English Channel...

The surface could be added as a chunk...and then moved to suit...but it feels more like a viewing/immersive/VR application rather than for the authoring tool - there is some work going on with a game engine and one of my models that is likely to deliver far more than the raw authoring tool such as Metashape could deliver.

I will share it if/when I can.

Scale - in the Standard version its not possible to add anything quantative or precise (Pro version required) but for scale we can add something everyone recognises.

A human.

Check this out:

https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/underwater-wreck-of-hm-submarine-e-49-40d1c47a4d7447feb42e643cea895d7a

Its the E49 wreck in Balta Sound. This was the first attempt at adding human scale by including a diver.

There are two divers in the SS Thistlegorm model, on the port side at the stern. Trouble is, the model is so massive they become lost. But they are there, in the ortho photo:

https://dronelab.io/map/public/viewer/e5a43bc124a34ea2b4bcfd1d2843463e

So perhaps a human would help? They need to remain very, very stationary and work quickly to capture them.

It won't help with the surface, but the fact they are in scuba gear will add underwater context too?

Glad to know its been inspiring.

I do a lot of underwater work (https://deep3d.co.uk) but I must confess the idea of a surface hasn't really been something to consider - for me at least - even when working with coral data.

Are you including a scale bar or anything in the scene that can act as an indicator of scale?

This may be something more suitable in the VR/game engine world perhaps?

Unless I'm missing something?

Accupixel have released a transform helper - which includes View mode:

Not sure if it helps?

General / Transform Script - Free For All
« on: August 27, 2021, 10:27:32 AM »
AccuPixel Technical Director Jose has very kindly released a Python script to aid the Transform commands for View, Region and Object - full details and how to download here:

https://accupixel.co.uk/product/metashape-script-transform-assistant/

We are very grateful to Geobit Consulting for making this available at zero cost...and to Alexy for the changes required for Metashape Pro 1.7 release.

Any and all feedback most welcome - we hope you find the script useful.

Could photogrammetry help mountain biking?

When it comes to measuring and creating objective evidence of trail erosion it certainly has potential:

Whilst the video may be continuous this does not guarantee success when it comes to aligning. Image blur caused by movement, out of focus, lack of detail & tie points will all trigger failure to align - take a close look at the images and see if there is any pattern to failure.

26 USBL measurements over 10 minutes will require interpolation to estimate the image locations for every frame between those taken at the same time as measurement - I would hesitate to suggest this will help with alignment or deliver a scaled model.

Extracting images from video will mean cameras are treated as N/C - not calibrated - and whilst Metashape can estimate the lack of focal length may be causing alignment issues.

ROV cameras tend to be good for seeing what is in front of the lens...to record video in low light...and guide the operator...they may not deliver high quality stills that work best for photogrammetry - can you share camera data?

We use a similar technique but work with GPS points taken every 2~4 seconds. Using these for scaling delivers very consistent results but would not use these values to aid camera alignment:

https://accupixel.co.uk/2021/07/26/new-release-gps-position-processing/

Not all images will need GPS reference for scaling and location, so the first steps would be to validate the source image quality, rerun alignment and then apply GPS values during recursive optimisation.

Jose and myself have recently added two topics dealing merging photogrammetry with laser scan data into the Professional online training course:

https://accupixel.co.uk/2021/05/25/merging-data-photogrammetry-laser-scans/

Access to new material for all existing students is included.

What's the cost of a  UWIS GPS system?

It really depends what your needs/requirements are, but for single diver tracking then this:

https://accupixel.co.uk/product/uwis-tracker-single-diver-rov/

Would get you started. This would also enable merging of camera positions with GPS data via our App (Accupixel are the UK dealer for UWIS and customers get the app).

Tablet for bidirectional comms and navigation is extra, as is additional tracker units.

Hope this helps?

Amazing work!  I am sure using UWIS GPS is improving processing performance for large projects but are you also finding significant accuracy improvements?

UWIS does three things:

Navigate - it helps us find the target quickly (https://deep3d.co.uk/2021/04/23/back-in-the-water/) using a sonar overlay on the tablet.

Scale - merge the UWIS GPS data with cameras for reconstruction constraints (https://deep3d.co.uk/2020/02/04/accuracy-defined/)

Geo locate - whereabouts in the world is the subject and how does it relate to others?

We have a little app that takes camera and UWIS data and merges them - https://deep3d.co.uk/2020/06/03/you-need-an-app-for-that/ - and version 2 is under development right now, adding a few features to refine accuracy.

And whilst much of this has been available in the terrestrial arena, underwater positioning has been the preserve of military or oil field sized budget holders - until now.

So for us, UWIS adds significant capacity and capability.

Both Jose Martinez and myself are delighted to announce the availability of the Accupixel online training course for Metashape Professional.

This training builds on the Standard course and includes real-world worked examples and downloadable content to work at your own pace.  The good news is both Standard and Pro courses are included when purchasing the Pro course.

We are extremely grateful for the recognition by the authors of Metashape - this course is endorsed by Agisoft.

More details on the course can be found here:
