Camera Calibration / Capturing Photos with zoom lenses

The Agiosft Tutorial recommends to set focal length of a used zoom lens either to maximum or minimum value -what is the reason behind this recommendation? As to photographic parameters i thought it is better to avoid minimum or maximum value because of distorsion?
