General / Re: RAM Usage - Building Textures
« on: April 16, 2025, 07:40:44 PM »
Good to know. My latest set created a model with 400+ million triangles that I decimated to 50 million. Using 16k textures on 50 million is where I got the "Bad Allocation" message. I switched to 8k and it completed fine.

Any updates on this issue? Sounds like Tas is doing similar work to myself - we fly a Mavic 3E about 12 feet away from building facades. I usually have an outside entity process, but I've successfully completed a model with just under 4,000 images. I've been working on one with just under 7,000 images and just got the "Bad allocation" error. I was using 16k textures. I've now downsized to 8192 but kept my UV maps (not sure if that's what I should have done) and reprocessing now.

Is there a workflow to use when building high-poly models to avoid memory limits? Like I have a building that I've decimated down to 500,000 (from 72M ;)

Also, I assume this is graphic card memory, true? I have 256GB of RAM but only 10GB on  my GPU (nVidia 3080)

Thanks James - both these guys optimize after each selection/deletion, so monkey see, monkey do!

General / Gradual Selection Order?
« on: June 18, 2024, 05:00:31 PM »
I've seen 2 different opinions on the order of the various Gradual Selection processes and was curious if anyone had any thoughts or reasoning between them.

One method is:
1. Reconstruction Uncertainty
2. Reprojection Error
3. Projection Accuracy

and the other flips the last two steps:
1. Reconstruction Uncertainty
2. Projection Accuracy
3. Reprojection Error

Metashape itself doesn't have analysis capabilitites, but there are other services that can do defect detection using computer vision - you could look at a site like aren.ai and see if that is something useful for you

Yeah I think that makes sense. I'd still like to hear from anyone that knows what the term "intensity" refers to.

It looks like the "Mosaic" blending mode accounts for cameras whose view lies along the face normal. This might answer my question.

By that logic, what does the "intensity" refer to in Max/Min Intensity blend modes? Is the "intensity" a value like "point confidence" where "max intensity" is like "max confidence"?

General / Texture Quality - what affects this?

I'm wondering if the camera angle relative to the subject (and thus to the resulting normal of the constructed face(s)) makes a significant difference in the quality of the pixels that get mapped onto that face.

Like if you took photos at 90 degrees to the surface of, say, a wall, and modeled that, but then also repeated the process but angled the camera at some angle other than 90 to the surface (say, 70 or 60 degrees) - does the software do more interpolating of the texturing pixels as the camera angle (relative to the face) moves away from 90 degrees?

I'm just trying to get a sense of how the textures get mapped to the faces, and how to optimize that process during the shoot.

General / Re: Decimating and Smoothing

I guess the "achieve the original model shape" is the point that I was using as the baseline reasoning for doing the smoothing first - iron out the imperfections, and then decimate that smoothed model.

Is there a preference between the order of these operations? I feel like you would smooth the high-face model first, then decimate the smoothed model... but I also have no idea what I'm doing.

General / What is "Adaptive camera model fitting" doing?
« on: May 16, 2024, 07:40:16 PM »
I've seen tutorials where people use this rather than the default settings in the dialog (the various fit parameters). When is it approriate to use one over the other?

This is Metashape 2.1.1
