Bug Reports / Re: "Build Dense Cloud" no longer in the workflow menu
« on: November 26, 2023, 09:35:22 PM »
This may be due to the use of several versions of the software for processing the same project.

That's why I tested with a few images (a set of ground shots to complement drone coverage) without masks and processed only with version 2.

I've cropped the dense cloud, so theoretically no outer points are missed. However, the mesh, once decimated, extends well beyond the cropped area, without interpolation.

Alas, from then on all my other attempts failed, as the decimated model obtained ignored masks and cleaning.

Last night, miraculously, I managed to get a clean decimated mesh after manually erasing the burrs from the former mesh (based on the dense cloud) and then produce the expected PDF.

As a consequence, the mesh made from the dense cloud includes these furtive points in the model even if interpolation is disabled.

I made several attempts with version 2. My problem is that even with a thorough cleanup, there are still points visible with Meshlab in the point cloud export, but invisible on the Metashape screen.

Hello Alexey,

I did alignment, dense cloud and first mesh with version 1.6. All photos were roughly masked and dense cloud manually cleaned for removing the background. After that I decimated the mesh in order to produce a final PDF.  I don't remember whether it was at this point that I switched to versions 1.85, since I was in hurry to provide the PDF to a colleague. As I couldn't get a model without fringe with this version, I moved on to version 2.0 with no more satisfactory results.

Merci Paul !  I have been confused by the fact that I started working on the same project with version 1.6 before installing 1.85 and then 2.0 (because of the december dead line). So far, I can no longer disable interpolation, which is a big drawback when processing objects (currently a Neanderthal skull). But I probably need to get into the logic of this fundamentally new version.

Bug Reports / "Build Dense Cloud" no longer in the workflow menu
« on: November 23, 2023, 09:59:45 PM »
Hello Agisoft team!

Coming back after a 3 years break, I'm disconcerted by version 2.0.3, which I installed a few days ago. I still haven't quite figured out how to disable interpolation in meshing. My tests with a few photos are interrupted by the disappearance of "Build Dense Cloud" in the workflow menu. What could I have done wrong? Thanks for your help.

Greetings from France,

Bug Reports / Re: No longer reference pane
« on: January 15, 2020, 04:47:34 PM »
I feel that the grouping of the workspace and references in 2 alternative tabs of the same pane, in the previous release, was more ergonomic and readable on a small screen (1920 x 918) than the current juxtaposition.

Anyway, Metashape is a more and more amazing tools.

Best,

Hugues

Sorry for having disturbed you! Indeed, "Reference" option was disabled in View menu... I did a confusion between Markers and Reference because of a common flag icon. Until then, I hadn't noticed  that Reference and Workspace were separable; I shall not forget.

Thank you Alexey for your immediate support!

I've tried different displays but without success. I also closed and restarted the software, did the same with the computer.  This morning I was using Word 2007, which seems to slow down Metashape, but I didn't experience any other effect with the previous release (1.5.5). Th computer has never been used in multiple displays.

Hello,

I installed yesterday the last release and worked fine with it. This morning I have no access to the reference pane. Did I do something wrong? I am unable to get it back. Thanks for help.

 Happy Old New Year!

General / Re: Macro SfM
« on: January 21, 2013, 01:27:44 PM »
Well, this is an interesting topic, but not for a short reply. I recently submitted a paper to Journal of Archaeological Science, making a review of the available affordable solutions for 3D recording and modeling at low and high optical magnification in the field of use-wear studies, but one of the reviewers, who is certainly preparing a paper on the same topic, stated that "There is no real new approach in this paper, no new experimental data, no new understanding of micro-wear data". As said Pierre Bourdieux, the French sociologist, science is a combat sport...

According to my experience with petroglyphs, bone and lithic tools, photogrammetry can works up to ~ 1.5:1 magnifcation (= macro objective with a short extension ring), but for helping Photoscan, which does an incredible work, it is better to reduce the resolution of the image (from 10Mp to 3Mp in my tests). At higher magnification, the depth of field is not sufficient for making the work comfortable: too many shots for carefully covering the whole volume or surface and then for processing.  When depth of field is missing, the best solution, which is involved in all the low and high power microscopes allowing 3D recording (except the Leica IC3D module), including the confocal microscope, is  focal plane merging, commonly called image stacking. In the intermediate magnification range, when depth of field is no longer sufficient for photogrammetry but still a bit high for getting a good vertical resolution (= enough steps), the solution is to combine the both principles. I already got nice results doing this, but not sure that the geometrical proportions are preserved.

The most complete and flexible software for image stacking is Helicon Focus (which includes Helicon Remote and a 3D viewer). However, its main function is not to provide 3D models. This is the reason why they are made in low resolution for being usable with any computer. Nonetheless, beside the light obj file, it is possible to save the depth map at full resolution. Such depth map can be processed by Interactive 3D Surface Plot, a plugin of ImageJ for getting 3D view, but no other way than screen shot for saving the result. As part of a research project entitled “Trac?ologie tridimentionnelle” (http://lascarbx.labex-univ-bordeaux.fr/Les-actions-de-recherche-en-cours/Traceologie-tridimensionnelle-T3D,i634.html - sorry, in French...), funded by Lascarbx, the lab Archeovison has made two Meshlab plugins for modeling and calibrating the depth maps from Helicon Focus. These plugins will be available for free within a few months. Here attached an example at 200x magnification as seen in Meshlab (use wear on the edge of a Mousterian scraper).

Did you try with different parameters, for example Geometry type "Sharp" instead of "Smooth"?

Hi RalfH,

Sorry for not having well understood your suggestion. Yes, processing hyperfocused photos with Photoscan can gives a worthwhile result (here attached a detail of http://www.agisoft.ru/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=533.0;attach=214 from http://www.agisoft.ru/forum/index.php?topic=533.msg2325#msg2325), but it is time consuming and you are quickly dealing with gigabytes of photos.
