Face and Body Scanning / Re: Compensating for clothing without much texture
« on: February 07, 2014, 11:41:51 PM »
Hi, we tried the cloud solution for aligning photos, the obj we got from Autodesk back was more detailed and with less noise than the Agisoft one. Its just the workflow of texture mapping in Agisoft (aft touchup in ZBrush and UV mapping) that I would miss. Need more comparision data, but to keep it in mind as a backup or alternative to PS it is ok.

Hi,

Textures with poor details, shiny ones,... are a problem. Suits, wedding dresses... are not easy to scan. Sometimes it is better to tell people to bring a second outfit, just to have a backup. Also some markers ( like small post-its) attached onto the problematic areas helps. ( just needs a bit of photoshopping or mudboxing afterwards...) We are still in the development of a reliable noise projection ( laser technology), I will poost on this forum if we succeed :-)). Nothing against Photoscan it is a fantastic tool, but have you tried Autodesk recap, for some scans ( esp. mesh building) it works better.
Regarding camera positions, for a multicam rig (360 array of cameras) you can use the camera position tool (xml file).
Good luck, all the best Andreas

Hi,

Are you masking your shoots, with a sort of a greenbox setup ? Also the position of cameras (stereo pairs, distance about 30cm to 40cm) could help, and a constant light, ( min. two flashes).

Hi,

we are running a 48 camera setup to scan people, pets... the results are ok, it strongly depends on the clothes, photogrammetry is sensible about surfaces, textures...
so if the costumer is wearing denim, casual clothes... the results are really good, postprocessing is reduced, but with that number of cameras, I always have to work in ZBrush, do some touch up... to get a 3D printable file. (thats our core business)

you can see some scans at sketchfab/ username: fabberlounge, or some photos on our website: fabberlounge.com.
If you send me a PM, I can send you some raw scan results also...

all the best, Andreas

Hi all,

We are working with tiffs and a Solidify filter for Photoshop

you can download the filter for free:

it really solves the seam issue.

Face and Body Scanning / Re: Max cameras per computer over USB
« on: January 16, 2014, 10:44:13 AM »
Hi,

It really depends on your USB hub and the length of the cables... we are working with a network of simple windows 7 computer and 18 cameras each, that is a reliable solution. Just make sure your USB cable length differs not too much, esp. the connection betwen USB hub and computer. Its a bit of trial and error, but with your hardware you should be able to connect more than 12 cameras..

Face and Body Scanning / Re: Synchronizing different DSLR cameras
« on: January 16, 2014, 12:00:52 AM »
...Has anyone tried this, or other techniques for two-stage capture that are simpler/more robust?  Or should I just use the extra cameras to improve coverage and forget about noise projection?...

Hi again,

There are unfortunately certain textures, where you really would need a noise projection... so if there is anyone out there with a reliable solution, I would invite them for a nice weekend in a 5star hotel in the centre of Vienna, including diner and a visit in Viennas best winebar (actually run by my wife.. ;) )

So go for denim, leather, tweet, and you really avoid a lot of mesh building problems....

Hi all to you,

may I ask why are you so interested in perfect synch. when you can use the flashes for exposure? My cameras are set to 1/2 sec. even 1sec. or more would be ok, as long as I am working with ISO 100 and F 11-13 in a quite dark studio. ( not completely dark, enough light to see what you are doing). Also with optimized flash positions (4-6 and 250W each), I get good sharp shadow free images.
Is there any other reason for perfect synch., other than not having the possibility for a studio setting ?
Maybe I have missed something really important, but for the purpose of scanning dynamic poses it is a realiable working solution ( I am running the 48camera studio since 4months now, did a lot of scans and 3D prints, kids, pets, people jumping and dancing... , no synch. or ligth issues)

thanks for an answer,

Hi,

You can export the texture as tiff and work on it in Photoshop, the great thing is you dont need to use all origin photos for texture creation, and you can choose the ones you are focussing on. Layer them in Photoshop, repair and import again to Agisoft. The other way is creation of UV map (ZBrush or similar), working on the texture directly in Mudbox (similar tools like Photoshop), thats the best way to do it, as you under control of your texture map projected on the final mesh.

Good luck, regards, Andreas from fabberlounge

Hi

If you have fixed camera positions and a chunk with good result, use that good working chunk, export the cameras (save as .xml) and realign the chunk again by using the import camera function.

That always helps...

Face and Body Scanning / Re: low-cost scanning using Kinect
« on: January 11, 2014, 07:52:37 PM »
Hi,

We have tried it out, with that experience I honestly can say its not comparable to a photogrammetric solution. Maybe with the Kinect 2.0 you get better results, the problem is that you have to turn in front of the kinect (while it moves up and down) and there are so many influence factors, its a nice gimmick but not a reliable solution. But I am sure that a lot of people will try it out, be maybe disappointed by a very small and not detailed figurino, thats the chance for high end products. Quality is the key...

3D system is on it

http://www.3dsystems.com/press-releases/3d-systems-first-deliver-3dmer-photobooth-retail-floor-and-event-space

as well as Artec:(thats a Kinect solution... not really comparable)

https://www.shapify.me/

or Twinkind, botshop, deepend production (only in Germany...) and a lot of Artec 3D full body scan and print companys, they are popping up at the moment,

I think quality is the answer, good solid scans, optimized texture maps, ready for the next versions o 3D printers with higher res...

Hi Wishgranter,

Great work congrat!! - we are using 48 cameras and we have limited our workflow to 2h (to make at least a bit of money..) - see our examples (you will find some optimization possibilities, but we have experienced that this quality level is absolutely ok for 3D prints... the max. resolution of a ZPrinter is the real limit !)

Hi, if you accept a higher ISO setting, or decrease your f-stop... even a 100W lighting is of course possible... all the best

Hi Exhale,

I also believe that the Canon1100D would be good enough, there are some advantages like the display can be positioned in a way that I can see the live picture, while focussing (esp. for my small studio a big advantage, as the cameras are placed very close to the walls). I have used the 1100D also for face, hands,... the output is good enough, so yes I think it will work with 1100D`s only. I could have saved some money (about €100 each), and spend that on more cameras, which would give better results in the end... that is the hard thing about trial and error, and the good thing to follow the Agisoft community :-)  all the best, happy XMas to all of you, as I will be on Skiing holiday for the next 10 days (no cameras, no ZBrush overnight sessions,...)
