General / mesh appeared to "explode"
« on: July 09, 2021, 02:06:10 AM »
For some reason my seemingly normal dese cloud of a high Utah ridge scan seemed to "explode" with hundreds of small spheres floating around the ridge, which was ill defined when the bits were removed. Any ideas?

General / Where did the camera rectangles go?

Hello, for some reasons I'm missing those little rectangles that show the placement of the cameras after the alignment phase. Any suggestions?

Bug Reports / freezes at 21% when "parameterizing texture atlas.."
« on: October 22, 2020, 07:21:08 AM »
I have a model in Metashape standard that freezes at 21% when "parameterizing texture atlas.." after creating the mesh and then creating a texture. I have re tried a few times 0- and waited hours each time.  This has never happened before now. Any suggestions?

General / The most effective way to make a scan from many photos?
« on: June 28, 2019, 03:27:11 PM »
I just returned from a trip where I let my laptop render for one and a half days. Photoscan said upon returning that I needed another 9 hours more to complete the scan. However I didn't have nine hours since I I needed to catch a train within 3 hours.

This scan was a record for me with 380 photographs. What is the most efficient way of completing such a scan on different multiple  overnight sessions? Can I divide it into chunks? If so, is there a good video link to how to achieve this? I have ot found any so far that are easy to understand. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

General / How high an overlap percentage is too much?
« on: January 15, 2019, 02:23:40 AM »
How high an overlap percentage is too much?

I recently used Drone Harmony to scan in a nearby hill with a tree on it's peak (a phenomenon called pedestal erosion). I decided to redo the following day. One calculates the overlap when programming a mission, though guessing the correct distance from the subject, and gimbal angle can be challenging.

However when I return the google map under the "mission" was missing since I was out of cell phone range, so I used DJO Go's tack orbit, which allows gimbal adjustment and distance on the fly.  I clicked away on the photos as fast as I could as it spun around the hill (RAW images on a Mavic 2).

I may have taken too many photos with too much overlap. It is now the second day of processing these images on Photoscan on my new lap top (with pretty close to the latest and greatest CPU, GPU ...and with 32 gigs of RAM). It says I have another day to go for the dense cloud calculation! I have the setting on "high".

Would it work about as well (but calculate much faster) with a setting on "medium"...or should I remove ever other image in the orbits to speed things up on future orbital scans. Perhaps being too lazy to mask out the sky and clouds (along with the moving cloud shadows) also screwed things up (though we'll see how it turns out...maybe tomorrow)?

What should the overlap percentage for obits be?

General / My photos never seem to calibrate (always NC) lately
« on: December 07, 2017, 09:37:20 AM »
My photos never seem to calibrate lately. In the last year or so my photos rarely seem to calibrate. I upgraded my drone from a P3 to a Mavic, and my camera from a Sony RX100 I, to a RX 100 IV.

I did find the specs for the calibration on this forum for the Mavic, but it’s a mystery on why the Sony images often come up “NC” after aligning.

I usually use the lens at the default wide angle, but I sometimes mix it with a shorter focal length for detailed shots, Photoscan almost always used to catch the calibration. (Albeit, it stills seems to scan ok with NC alignments.) Any suggestions?

General / Focal length and pixel size for a DJI Mavic Drone
« on: August 28, 2017, 09:19:26 AM »
Does anybody know what the focal length and pixel size for a DJI Mavic Drone are? I need to punch those numbers into the Camera Calibration dialogue box since all my Mavic images have come into Photoscan with "NC" next to the image names. I just upgraded from a DJI Phantom 3 (whose focal length is 3.61 and x/y pixel sizes both .00170572 according to the Camera Calibration dialogue box). The Mavic camera is slightly different than the Phantom's.

General / Best Way to make Masks?
« on: January 13, 2015, 07:01:44 AM »
What is the best way yo make masks? I have Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere. I have been selecting backgrounds in Photoshop, inverting the selection and then saving each file, but its incredibly tedious with 100+ files. There must be a better way.

General / How does one mask by quickly "automating" the process?
« on: January 01, 2015, 06:30:50 AM »
How does one mask by quickly "automating" the process: “from back ground” and “keying”? This excellent video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_F-b2hxP_o touches on the subject but doesn’t go into detail.

I have Premiere Pro CS6 with After Effects (which I never use since Premiere has enough effects for my needs including the outstanding Ultra Key). I would love to know how to do these processes. How does one generate all the masks with the keying?

General / Crash - how much Ram is recommended? I have 20 gigs
« on: November 12, 2014, 12:25:38 AM »
Hello, I just made a dense cloud of a Soviet monument stele in Berlin. It took a couple hours, but all was fine when complete. However I tried to make a medium mesh (4 million faces) from the cloud. When I came back after 10 hours of processing the mesh in the morning it was at 10% and was using most of my  20 Ram of memory. It couldn't handle the processing. I have never seen that before today. I tried for about 1/2 hour to cancel the processing with no success, and then used the Task Manager to close the program, losing all previous processing. What would you recommend – get more ram, try chunks (whatever they are..?) using my laptop as well, lower the mesh quality?

General / scan in a line of about 8 columns?
« on: September 23, 2014, 10:53:00 AM »
How would I scan in a line of about 8 columns. Would I scan in them as a group from the same angle and then at an array?

And would I  then photo each individual column -  with photos taken all around it (masking the single column out, assuming people are wandering in the background)?... And then add detailed images: photo the top ? of a single column taken all around it, and the bottom ? of the column all around – since columns take up a small portion of the frame. I’d assume that all photos need the same focal length? …and then I’d throw all of these images into one Phohoscan project and process?

I am attaching a few images, including a single bullet hole ridden (ww2) column taken by masking out the others (with no close-up detail shots), and a rendering in 3D Studio of the final column (using my own bitmap, not the orginal...in order to see what it looks like in a 3D print). Would I have improved it by taking details of the top 1/2 and bottom 1/2?  Thanks in advance.

Why do some photos process as aligned, but similar ones are not (with "NA" next to them)? Can they be improved to align? I am attaching two examples. I see that the masking is not perfect, but that should make a difference should it?

General / Bumpy suface
« on: September 14, 2014, 10:53:32 PM »
The higher the cloud density, the more bumpy the surface. Does anyone know why. Also, how would I improve the quality? I have uploaded 4 images. One is an image of the original sculpture (with white where the mask is). The second (that looks like porcelain) was form Catch 123, the second (less bumpy) was using high quality dense loud and the third using a ultra high cloud (very bumpy). I can't remember but I don' think I reused the map.

General / New version instructions
« on: September 04, 2014, 07:21:24 PM »
There are no manuals, so I have  been going through the tutorials. The problem is that they seem to be for an early version of the software. The workflow tab is very different from my 1.0.4 version. Do I reuse depth maps? What size do I make the cloud?...then what?

General / newbie questions - Chunks
« on: September 02, 2014, 05:58:52 PM »
I can't find a detailed description of "chunks". Are this bits that one puts together when making a detailed object (in parts -say a church with sculptures on it -doing each sculpture separately), and/or with photos from different perspectives (say from a top view, then a chunk form a side view)? I am new to this software, but I have used 123 Catch quite a bit. Also is using Photoshop to mask a good idea? ...How Do I import it then?
