General / best format to share laserscans
« on: January 16, 2024, 12:31:33 PM »
Hi all,

quick and short post.
I use Metashape as my main software for processing and manipulating 3D photogrammetric survey.
usually we hire 3rd parties to perform laserscanning for us on location (site survey)

my question:
I need the hired people to send me the 3D laser scans after they geo-reference them and process them in a format that I can still import in Metashape to process further products such as DEMs and orthomosaic, etc, as needed.
what should I ask them to do to ensure the data I receive is usable in such matter?

please advice.

General / heritage documentation events
« on: January 06, 2023, 12:02:10 PM »
Hi all,

wish you a happy 2023.

since this is a community for documentation specialist, I was wondering if you can advise me on events world wide concerning heritage documentation that I can attend or join to develop my practice in this field and to share my expertise as well. maybe summer\spring schools, workshops, conferences, etc..

for example CIPA conference.
https://www.cipa2023florence.org/home

what have you attended before? what are you planning for 2023? what do you recommend I start with?

about me, I had been working in the field of Heritage documentation for the past 6 years, the latter 3 years my work was excessively involved into photogrammetry recording for archaeological sites. I was lucky enough to be across a team who is actively doing archaeological excavation projects, which I usually documented all in photogrammetry and produced ortho-rectified drawings for!
I want to grow into the profession more, there for I am asking you advice on how to shape my career path by acquiring new knowledge and develop my practice.

wishing to hear from you.

General / refrence large error
« on: July 19, 2022, 10:23:30 AM »
Hi all

I have a weird problem that occurs multiple times now. it i not related to the software technically though.
but I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I am referencing an archaeology model, that have GCP on, I input all references based on a geo-refrence survey. I get large error in all of them.
I try to "show info" and individually make it right but that barely change anything.
there is nothing I can change in terms on reference locations and quantity, neither with the survey data.

how can I solve this?

General / exporting panorama option not available
« on: March 22, 2022, 10:52:54 AM »
Dears,

this is weird, but for some reasson the "exporting panorama" option is not available in the drop down menu for me, any thoughts?

I have doen all necessary steps:
1- importing photos
2- creat group, move photos into group
3- set group type to staion
4- align photos

now for exporting panorama, the option is not even available, am I doing something wrong?

General / how to make model for a virtual tour
« on: January 24, 2022, 01:53:14 PM »
Hi dears,

I have a corridor space showcasing paintings on both sides of wall, which i am requested to create a virtual tour of, where the used can hub in from one point o the other and see the whole thing!

can you please guide me which is best approach to do the job?

I am thinking to do multiple stations of 360 degree photos, but can I then process that in Agisoft all together? I know a project takes only one station at a time.

The other option is to do a regular recording and process a model, but I do not know how to make that into a 360 degree virtual tour thing from there.

eventually the tour is gonna be uploaded on google and shared via a link to be accessed.

General / merging models from seperate files?
« on: August 16, 2021, 05:39:49 PM »
Hi All,

thanks for stopping by.

I processed multiple models of the same object in separate files. basically each process an individual file.
I want to merge them all into one file. and align them to each other to have the same orientation and location.

how can this be done without reprocessing everything within one file?

General / texture dark spots in mesh
« on: June 21, 2021, 11:54:15 AM »
Dears,

I am having a slightly weird problem with texture in model.

the generated texture is having a batch of darker color that is on a big portion of the model.
this is not shown in the photos and I can not understand how it happen.
kindly see attached photos.

I have to solve this because this is a documentation of an archaeology site and this dark batches may be interpreted as Ash.
I would appreciate any thoughts you have on this matter.

General / destructed model when exporting to geo-refrence system
« on: February 27, 2021, 01:30:42 PM »
Dears,

I work with Geo-refrenced models, therefor I set up the reference settings to match the coordinate system\zone of my projects.
whenever I export my models (any format) and choosing the same coordinate system  from the export window, the models turns out very destructed same as below. But when I keep the setting in the export window for "local coordinates" it turns out fine, however I mostly need the model to export to match their Geo-refrence location\orientation.

would appreciate your thoughts on this matter, I have no idea what is going on with it.

General / merging chuncks without markers
« on: February 04, 2021, 10:10:34 AM »
Hi all,

hop you are doing good.

I have a model of one excavation site, separated in multiple chunks.
I processed it in multiple chunks because Metashape won't recognize the whole set of photos in one chunk as to be a complete one site. there for I separated the photos in multiple chunks (based on series group) and Metashape process each chuck perfectly.
However, I want the whole model , therefor I need to align the chunks (each separate mesh) with each other. but it won't align as it should when I run "align chunks".
and I don't have markers for each of the chunks (the photos it self have no GCP marker point)
 :-\
can some one help with this? what are your thoughts or workaround for such problem?

thanks.

General / archiving projects while still usable
« on: December 07, 2020, 01:20:55 PM »
Hi All,

I am not sure if there is a thing similar to what I am looking for.

I want to know if there is a way to archive Metashape projects but in a form which I can still access to extract information (if needed)
currently the project files are taking up to 600 GB of my 1 TB drive, and I still have many new ones to process.

I am still new to this practice and trying to build up a methodology that works. Can you please share your ideas or tips regarding this?

Many thanks!

General / geo-refrenced orthomosaic photos exported with wrong coordinates
« on: September 18, 2020, 10:00:06 PM »
Hi all,

I have a model of excavation site that is referenced with markers, of which the xyz values are given to match point on site. I have generated an ortho photo for the "top" view, choosing "geographic" projection option. exported as Tiff with World file. I imported the photo into Autocad Map 3d, and it fill right into place matching the surveyed location. setting in xy correct location i mean. with z being 0.

now, the problem occurs because I need ortho photos for elevations and sections of the same model.
what I did is, as an example:
I set the view to predefined "front" view, then process generating orthomosaic, I choose "planer" projection (because geographic is greyed out) and from te drop down menu I choose "Top", I keep other options to their default, I now have the image exported as Tiff with world file.
since it is an elevation (facade) view then the photo actually shows what the model looks like in alignment to xz axes.

when I import this into autocad Map 3d, it falls in the wrong location. and in the wrong rotation. so, it imports it in the xy plane, but still insert it in different location than my survey and of course it should be tilted 90 degrees into the xz plane.

How can I export such views with their right coordinates so that it is imported within the right coordinated too??
is that possible? if not, then what strategy can I follow to make use of these image in the way I need ? of course I can always change the view in autocad to be "front", change UCS to match it, import the image, and manually move it into the right place. but I believe there must be a smarter way to do this since Metashape already offers the tool of exporting geo-refrenced ortho images. in the mean time I am only able to make use of ortho images in the "top" view.

all advises are appreciated.

many thanks!

General / orthomosaic fail, no identifiable error
« on: September 18, 2020, 05:11:46 PM »
Hi all,

I want to generate an orthomosaic photo, the process goes about 20% then suddenly end with no error or success message, the ortho tab is there but totally empty, also I export the ortho photo, it is just a blank space (expected but wanted to experiment it)

there is already a topic in the forum with same issue, the advice there doesn't seem to help me in this situation. (link https://www.agisoft.com/forum/index.php?topic=7324.0)

any ideas or suggestion that might help?

below are more details:
chunk is merged of 4 chuck, all cameras are there with the right path, textured model of the merged chuck also looks very good, area is also iside the bounding box frame. I tried using smaller area of the model but also had the same issue.

looking forward to hearing from you all!
thanks.
