General / Differences in mesh 'bulging' between Metashape versions
« on: September 06, 2023, 07:56:25 AM »
Hi Metashape team,

We have been using Metashape to create 3D models of underwater coral ecosystems and have noticed substantial differences in mesh building algorithms between versions (specifically from 1.7.6. to 1.8.4). However this is not resolved in v.2.0.2.

Specifically, these differences between versions result in significantly more ‘bulging’ of models in data-deficient areas (e.g. the underside of plate corals) in versions 1.8.4 and 2.0.2 than in 1.7.6 (see attached screenshots). This is problematic for our applications due to a need to compare volumes of corals overtime to detect differences. Accordingly we have reverted v.1.7.6 to ensure artifacts caused by mesh generation algorithms do not influence our results.

Accordingly, I am curious to know whether this artifact of ‘bulging’ represents an issue that will be resolved in future Metashape versions, or is a trade-off caused by other benefits of the algorithm and is not due to be addressed. Alternatively, is it possible to add additional functionality that would allow selection of different mesh-building algorithms in future versions?

Thank you very much for your assistance in resolving my concern,
