General / Scaling factors when importing mesh into 3D Software
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:05:04 PM »
Hi there,

I import my meshes from photoscan into Maya. Generally I then align these meshes with simple geometry from surveys. However before aligning the two I have to scale the mesh to match the scale of the survey. Does anyone know if there are set scaling factors or if there is a way to import a mesh from photoscan so that it is already at the same scale?

I usually start with scaling the mesh by 24 times and then scaling by slight graduations by hand to match. From now on I will note down how much this scale factor is and see if there is a general rule and post back my findings. However, if anyone has any pointers or thoughts on this please let me know.

General / Foliage, organic object and flat elements
« on: June 22, 2012, 11:12:14 AM »
Hi there,

I mainly use Photoscan to model interiors/exteriors etc. Recently, I have been trying to use it to model smaller things. Generally my tests have been very successful until I started trying to model bushes, ferns, flowers etc. My results have been ok, but not great...I'm wondering if this is a limitation of the software or if I need to approach taking the photos and altering my settings for this different task? Any help much appreciated.

I wondered if my problems had something to do with slight movement in the organic plant or the small/flat depth of the leaves. Therefore I did a test using random shapes cut from a sheet of plastic. I took a good amount of photos of this arrangement of plastic pieces...however, I was faced with the same problem when processing; the software had difficulty in modelling the depth of the plastic pieces. Anyone got any thoughts/insight?

General / Difference between Wavefront .obj and Collada .dae exports
« on: June 14, 2012, 08:52:59 PM »
Hi there,

Can anyone help me understand what the .obj and .dae exports from photoscan do to the mesh? Are normals changed/edited in one and not the other?

I have exported a model in both formats and imported them into Maya. Both I have given a Lambert shader and applied the same jpg texture. However, the textured models look different. The mesh looks the same when looking at the wireframe, but the shaded .obj looks smooth in comparison to the .dae which makes the faces of the mesh more obvious. The .dae also makes the texture darker.

So can anyone tell me what is lost/changed in each so I can try and decide which to use?

Thanks

General / Point Cloud .obj not importing/opening
« on: June 13, 2012, 08:00:25 PM »
Hi there,

I am new to Photoscan, but already I think it's great! I have been using Photoscan standard to produce models of film sets for use in visual/digital effects.

So far I have exported .obj to use in Autodesk Maya, this has all been successful and with the texture on the shader it looks great.

I am interested in exporting the point cloud too. However, I cannot import/open it in the same way I do the model. Maya won't read the point cloud .obj.

Can anyone give me some help/advice? I started trying to take the point cloud via blender or meshlab but without any success.

General / Importing Camera positions into Maya
« on: June 01, 2012, 05:32:12 PM »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the process for importing the cameras from Photoscan into Autodesk's Maya (which file format to use, plugins etc)?

I am new to Photoscan (but am very impressed) and have a limited knowledge of maya. I have imported the mesh created by photoscan via .obj and applied the texture in the normal maya way.

I would like to include the photoscan camera positions in my maya scene because I am using a lower res texture. I would like to provide the people I'm passing the model on to with camera positions and the original raw photos so they can reproject at whatever resolution they prefer.

Any help most appreciated.

General / Relinking Photos
« on: June 01, 2012, 10:00:59 AM »
I have Photoscan Standard. I am new to using it, but think it's great!

Is there a way to relink photos if they have been moved?

I work for a film production company. I move around a lot and use various computers, therefore I would like to use Photoscan (and open my projects) on different computers (mac and Pc) but I can't work out how you change the images' location...?

Any help much appreciated
