General / Very 'wonky' buildings???
« on: October 13, 2013, 04:22:26 AM »
See attached image.

It is a tall structure (conveyor/train load out facility) that I am trying to get a more accurate ortho image of.  I have tried outputting the image with various different settings but so far haven't had a lot of success.

I understand that this type of thing is very difficult for photogrammetry, ie tall or suspended features, but is there a 'preferred' setting/workflow in Photoscan to achieve the best results?

Thanks.

General / Optimisation question
« on: October 04, 2013, 04:50:03 PM »
When I run optimise on my sparse point cloud, what is the difference between having the images enabled and disabled?

Also, what is k4 and should I have that selected?

Thanks

Feature Requests / Gradual Selection value input
« on: September 16, 2013, 10:16:27 AM »
Rather than just having the 'slider bar' would it be possible to actually enter the value manually into where the number is displayed?

See image attached.

Cheers!!

General / 3rd party photo editing software??
« on: September 06, 2013, 07:25:08 AM »
Hello all,

Question...  Obviously Photoscan is capable of producing orthophotos well in excess of 30k pixel dimensions when exporting at full resolution (UAV data).

My problem is that not many software packages can handle images larger than 30k pixels.  My versions of Photoshop and Paintshop Pro both won't open these files so I am limited to exporting orthos no greater than 30k if I wish to touch them up further with 3rd party software.

Does anyone know of a photo editing package that can open files larger than this?  Is there a way for Photoshop to open them??

Any help will be much appreciated.

Cheers!!

General / Relative vs. Absolute accuracies
« on: July 30, 2013, 05:06:02 AM »
Example:
Using a UAV for aerial mapping/volume calculations with or without GCP's over small stockpiles (200m x 200m)

With GCP's obviously the absolute accuracies will increase significantly but will the relative accuracies change/improve?

I have a client who just wants volumes of their stockpiles and I am wondering if I would get satisfactory results without the use of GCP's, as they do not need the data to be accurately geo-referenced.

I am hoping that I can get away without the use of GCP's as it would save me a lot of time and my client a lot of money??

General / After build geometry model is completely black
« on: July 19, 2013, 08:24:50 AM »
This is the first time I have encountered this but after building geometry both the texture and shading were completely black?  I ran it again and it was fine.  Has anyone encountered this before?  What may have caused it to happen?

Cheers.

General / Power lines and suspended objects??
« on: July 03, 2013, 05:41:18 AM »
Question...

Does anyone know how to create accurate orthos of suspended objects, such as power lines etc?  Generally anything suspended above the ground comes out very segmented.

I understand the fundamentals of aerial photogrammetry and why this is an issue but is there a way that Photoscan can potentially correct these problems?

I am doubting that there is but just thought it was worth asking.

See attached image for an example.

Cheers.

General / Gradual selection???
« on: June 29, 2013, 03:37:55 PM »
Hello all,

I have asked this question before but sadly got no replies!  Maybe it's a tough one?  I'll try again...

Reprojection Error and Reconstruction Uncertainty... what exactly do they mean?  And what are the numbers on the slider bars representing?

I have basically worked out what I need to be doing with them to get good results but I don't actually understand the principle behind what I am doing!?!

ANY thoughts towards this topic would be very much appreciated!!

Thanks.

General / Apple Mac running Windows 7?
« on: May 24, 2013, 02:27:02 PM »
Hello all,

I have been offered the use of a Mac Pro which is running Windows 7.  Will Photoscan Pro work on this computer or will it only work on an actual PC?

Cheers,
Matt.

General / Does the 'Align Photos' stage utilize the GPU??
« on: May 05, 2013, 02:40:16 PM »
Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if the 'Align Photos' step uses the GPU at all or is it only using the CPU during this stage?

Thanks.

General / Gradual selection - need a simple definition
« on: April 27, 2013, 07:30:09 AM »
Hello all,

I am struggling to understand the principles behind the 2 options available within Gradual Selection, specifically in point cloud mode.

I have read what manual has to say about it but still don't fully understand.  I process aerial imagery of areas up to 50ha from a UAV, mines and quarries mainly, and believe that this process is going to be important to me in achieving the best results.

Can someone possibly explain these features in 'very basic' language to me and perhaps even suggest what settings I should follow to remove erroneous points etc?

What exactly do the numbers on the scale bars mean when performing both Reprojection Error and Reconstruction Uncertainty?  Reprojection Error I am guessing is a distance in metres?

Any explanation would be much appreciated!

Many thanks,
Matt.

General / Simple workflow question - build geometry?
« on: April 08, 2013, 02:00:48 PM »
Hello all,

This is probably a simple question to many of you, but I am new(ish) to Photoscan and just need some clarification...

I process aerial photography from over mine sites, quarries etc and after the align photos stage (plus adding GCP's and optimization) I have my 3D point cloud.  I can export this point cloud (sparse) and then tidy it up in other software packages and the results seem to be very good.  I am only really needing a 3D model and orthophoto and both of these I can export after the align photo stage.

Q. What extra benefit do I get from the build geometry step?  Does this step tighten up the accuracy's or is it actually for another purpose?  I am having trouble getting my head around this part of the software.  Due to it being a time consuming process, if I don't really need it I'd rather not do it!

Your replies will be appreciated.

Thanks.
Matt

Bug Reports / Crash with 51 seconds remaining in build geometry step
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:46:18 AM »
Hello all,

Photoscan just crashed on me with only 51 seconds remaining in the build geometry step!  There was no reason given for this, it just said "Photoscan has stopped working and the program must close".  I have built geometry on this same project with the same settngs previously and it worked fine.

Any ideas as to what may have happened?  I am running Version 0.9.0 Build 1586 64bit.  Is it possibly a windows issue?  If this happens while working on a clients job it may become a bit of an issue!

Cheers,
Matt.

General / After alignment some photos do not have error values?
« on: January 20, 2013, 06:03:09 AM »
I noticed that after photo alignment a few of the photos did not have error values associated with them (only 9 out of 735).  They seemed to be restricted to photos around the outer boundary of the job.  What is the cause of this and can it be corrected?  Should I be disabling these photos before building geometry?

Thanks.

General / How many points per image should I detect?
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:58:09 PM »
Hi all,

Can anyone help me with determining how many points per image that I should detect?  I see the default is 40,000.  I fly low level UAV aerial photogrammetry with a 20mm lens and images around 8.5Mp each.  I can only assume that less points will mean faster processing but less accurate orthos and DEM.  Is 40,000 the recommended or should it be higher or can I get away with less?  Obviously the faster I can process my data the better but I do not want to compromise too much on output quality.

Thanks!
