General / Re: Problem Scanning Small Objects
« on: October 08, 2014, 07:47:19 PM »
Hi, the duck in the photo has only small focus area, due to small DoF. So each photo has only small amount of details available. You can try using smaller aperture for larger DoF in order to get clear pic of the whole object in each picture.

I just scanned a baby tricycle with shinny surface. My approach is to avoid sharp lighting, close up each portion and take as  many photo as possible (>100 photo in my case). Use clean background and no masking is required. Hope it helps :)

Hi, My another approach is to buy extra USB 3.0 controller card to allow more interface to "groups" of camera.

Hi DCK, I think as your object is placed in controlled environment, you can easily take background photos and do masking nicely. Even without masking, i think you can still generate good results. So masking prior or after gives similar result.  But sometimes it is not possible to take background photos or there are other unwanted objects in the photos such as moving people. The above procedures can help to mask out these factors based on the rough model. But do not expect the masking result is very accurate therefore you have to modify it manually ;)

Hi Brit,
3. no masking -> align photo -> generate dense cloud -> generate mesh -> import mask -> from model. Done!
4. click the photo, you can edit the mask with the buttons given on the tool bar. just like photoshop
5. re-run align photo...... again. The model will be regenerated will new mask information

Anything I am missing or incorrect?  :)

Hi Brit, what Alexey means:

1. Align the photo, dense cloud and build the mesh without any masking
2. The generated mesh is roughly formed
3. Now, select the import mask -> from model! you can see the photos are masked with the rough model but not very fine
4. Then you can check the photo and edit the mask of each photo manually.
5. Once you have edited a better set of masks, you can re-run the process again  :)

Hi very nice works.

Have you seen this link? The simple way to do wired triggering, :)

Hi Leo,

I don't think the print head resolution on 2D paper can be truly applied on 3D. I remember someone said the resolution of z printer is somewhat equivalent to 50dpi. Unless someone can improve the "effective" resolution of the powder, the texture detail cannot be improved further.

But 3000 dollars to buy a color 3D printer with 75kg is still amazing to me.  ;D

I like to keep most dense points and just manually remove those shells of points which are obviously offset from the main cloud. I do not use gradual selection becos I will do the cleaning later anyway ;)

Hi, I am using a mix of canon DSLR, 550d, 100d. You may find others are using D3200, 5D markIII or even  raspberry pi. :)

The basic of PS is to extract the details of the pictures for 3D reconstruction. Surely the larger pixel numbers, less compression and less noise the better. But try not to sharpen the image by software otherwise the pictures may lose the details  :)

color print my pets in house in my life time ;D

Well come to Seattle and I can do it for you :)

Thanks for your invitation.  I think even stoke light is too exciting to my 18 yr old cat    ::)

Few days ago, a desktop SLS printer was announced. It is more exciting than color cubejet  8)

Its good to know someone is working on color print with different technologies. I wish I can print metal parts and color print my pets in house in my life time ;D

I have no expectation on 4500 any more :-[.

Thanks ttoke for your information :)

Good inspiration   8), But I don't think the current resolution of printer can meet this level of details. Also the sandstone texture requires loads of work to refine the surface.  :D

Hello, the studio I am working has a size of 12ft diameter. Normally standing pose is absolutely fine for one or two models at 35-55mm.  But for motion, a larger area is always an advantage. :)
