General / Re: 3D building - automatic densecloud cleaning???
« on: December 24, 2018, 06:04:11 PM »
I have had some luck in using Cloud Compare to clean up and thin out some point clouds in the past.  It's quite the learning curve, though.  I've just gone back to doing manual cleaning of bad points as my scenes are usually pretty small.

You might could reach out to someone at the Swedish video game developer DICE; they specifically used Agisoft to created game models from physical props and terrain for Battlefield 1 and Star Wars: Battlefront.  There are a few youtube videos that speak about the process they used, but if you can find some of the folks that specifically worked in those departments and reach out to them they might be able to answer your questions directly.

General / Re: Balancing dense cloud specs vs mesh specs

Someone chime in if I'm wrong, but it is my understanding that choosing the smaller face counts in the options dialog when building the mesh doesn't actually reduce the amount of processing the system does.  Selecting a lower face count is just adding a decimation step automatically at the end of processing.

Say your high face count is 10 million, and your medium is 5 million.  If you select the 5 million, it will generate the entire 10 million face mesh, then decimate at the end down to the 5 million.  That's why it's always best to go ahead and run the high face count for the mesh, that way you can do whatever editing you need to do, first, then smooth and decimate as you need.

General / Re: Masked areas generated in texture

I'm using 1.3.4 build 5067.  I didn't know there was an update; when I click check for updates the software says that it is up to date and the latest version.

General / Masked areas generated in texture
« on: January 30, 2018, 06:32:55 PM »
In older versions of Photoscan, areas that were masked in the photos would not be used to generate the texture for the mesh model.  With the newest versions I have noticed that this is no longer the case and that masking has no effect on what is or isn't included in the texture.

Many of the models I create involve roadways with moving vehicles and it's been helpful for me to mask out the cars from photo to photo so that the rendered texture is only of the roadway.  Otherwise there are ghosted images of anything that has moved in and out of the frame from photo to photo.

Is there a feature or option that I am missing that can reenable this?

+1, I really need something like this.

Could you post a picture of the figurine?  That would help us better understand what you're working with.

Feature Requests / Thin Dense Point Cloud
« on: December 29, 2016, 06:03:59 PM »
I end up doing a lot of modeling of built up areas with many buildings and houses.  If I use the lower quality settings for building the dense clouds, a lot of the edges will come in rounded and not sharp.  However, if I use the higher quality settings I end up with 100+ million points in the dense point cloud which drastically slows down my processing time when building the mesh.

In programs like Cloud Compare there are ways to thin the point clouds and remove redundant points according to some parameters.  I've come out with some beautiful looking point clouds that would make ideal quick meshes for me, but there is no option to reimport point clouds and I haven't been able to make a third party mesh successfully that I can reimport.

If there were an option to thin out a dense point cloud, basically say limiting points to a specific density per unit, it would be incredibly useful for me.

General / Re: Place Markers problem
« on: December 29, 2016, 05:41:28 PM »
You need to add the markers to at least 2 aligned photos before they will show up on the rest of the aligned photos as the grey flags.  If you place a marker on one photo and select a second photo that should contain that marker you will see a red line that should intersect (or close to) that marker.  Just find your marker, right click, select place marker and select the name of the marker you wish to place.  After that, all of the aligned photos containing that marker should appear with a grey flag.

The short answer is it not exact at all. The accuracy you might expect from the Phantom's built-in gps (geotag) is about 2m. So the resulting models, if nothing else enters the equation, sould never be considered as accurate maps.
You must use Ground Control Points full stop. But even if you do so, you should take care of a generally ignored issue that is caused by its rolling shutter technology. It partially ruins the internal metrics of an image taken from a fast moving platform and can yield to unacceptable results.
Any serious photographer should be horrified by phantoms and by the croud using them without knowledge about mapping, surveying or photogrammetry.

I've used the Phantom 3 extensively for small scale mapping and the rolling shutter is a non-issue.  At the altitude at which it's useful, between 100-200 ft agl,  it simply doesn't go fast enough to create a shifting effect as long as you have decent light.  My shots usually expose between 1/500 and 1/1k of second.  You would have to fly below 100 feet at it's full speed in low light to see negative effects.

Are you adding the GCP's after alignment or before alignment?  Do you get the bowl effect without the GCP's?

It might be easier to just delete those points before building your model and then use something like Sketchup to add the pillars back in from a generic model for the final product.

General / Re: Textures
« on: June 28, 2016, 05:11:13 PM »
The multiplier essentially splits the texture into separate files based on the setting, each one having the resolution in the other setting.  So 4096x1 will create one .tif or .jpg with a 4096x4096 resolution.  8192x2 will create two texture files each with 8192x8192 resolution.

So by doubling your setting from 4096 to 8192, you're creating a 4 times higher resolution.  By selecting the x2 multiplier making two files at 8192, your creating a 8 times higher resolution.

As far as how to use the multiple texture files it all depends on the software you're using and its limitations.  I upload a lot of my projects to Sketchfab and it accepts at least up to 4 texture files, though usually I just stick to one for simplicity.

General / Re: Which Align mode I should use?
« on: June 15, 2016, 06:48:38 PM »
I wanted to follow up with a clarification.  Looks like I was wrong with my understanding of the generic pair preselection.  According to Alexey in an older post:

Generic pre-selection at first tries to find overlapping images using downscaled copies of original image and then to match only overlapping images. The example, used by Wishgranter doesn't mean Generic preselection will work always as described. That means that photo X will be matching with photo Y only (because they are overlapping) and not with every image in the set.

For the highest accuracy aligning with pair preselection disabled is the best method.  The other pair preselection methods (reference and generic) will align your photos faster with more error.  The pair preselection basically tells the program which pictures to compare to one another.

The reference preselection uses the geotags from the metadata to compare which photos are most likely taken next to one another (overlapping).  The generic, I believe, simply assumes the the photo coming before and after specific photo are most likely overlapping... though I don't know if it does this based on time stamps in metadata or based on the filename.

Disabling this pair preselection makes the software compare each photo to every other photo in order to estimate camera position, which gives better results but is obviously more resource intensive.  Also, disabling the reference preselection does not disable the georeferencing of the final alignment.  As long as your photos have geotags the software will still estimate a coordinate system for the alignment.

Personally I never use anything but disabled pair preselection anymore.  If I have a lot of photos that I need aligned quickly I will use some post processing to resize the photos to a smaller resolution and then process them normally.
