Is there a good paper describing featue detection?

General / Changing filters used to find points of interest for alignment
« on: February 26, 2019, 04:53:38 PM »
I want to experiment with Sobel, Prewett, and Canny filters used to find points of interest during alignment.  Is there a way to do this in MetaShape?

General / Intel GPU Maxed Out, i7 CPU and Nvidia GPU less that 1%
« on: December 27, 2018, 08:13:16 AM »
Hi.
I am using an old HP Envy 17 gamming laptop for photogrammetry.  I noticed that during the alignment phase that the i7-4700MQ quad core CPU is running at 1%, the Nvidia GT 740 GPU is running Cuda at 0%, and the Intel HD Graphics 4600 running OpenCL is maxed out at 90%.   Have I set my GPU preferences incorrectly?

Can Metashape classify clouds in the sky and then not select that class to reconstruct a dense point cloud?

Feature Requests / Re: Implement Lens Distortion model for Zoom Lens
« on: January 09, 2018, 07:18:14 PM »
I am thinking about the calibration interpolating across zoom settings within a single calibration group.

I have not had good luck with calibration groups.  My markers are quickly overwhelmed by tie points and prove ineffective in forcing good alignment.  I agree that it is better to keep zoom, focus, aperture fixed...but that is not easy when the objects you are working with are 200+ feet across and depth of field becomes a significant issue...even with a prime lens.

Being able to use a zoom lens would give me more flexibility keeping the near and far object details in focus...sounds like shooting at hyper-focal distances....but is not always the case.  Having the freedom to use a zoom lens tailored to each specific shot would help my photogrammetry results....but produces an image set that can't be sorted into a few calibration groups.

Feature Requests / Implement Lens Distortion model for Zoom Lens
« on: December 31, 2017, 05:02:55 PM »
Everything I read on this forum implies that the implementation of "Brown's" Lens Distortion model used by Photoscan can not handle zoom lenses.  Have you tried to implement the Z-D calibration modification described in "Zoom-Dependent Camera Calibration in Digital Close-Range Photogrammetry" by C.S. Fraser and S. Al-Ajlouni out of the University of Melbourne in Australia?

I have been playing with the new Model View <Camera><Show Images> feature.  Objects I work with tend to be symmetric.  The new feature shows the image on both side of the camera; when looking through the camera as well as when you are looking into the camera.  It should only display the image when looking through the camera at the object, otherwise you can't tell which side of a symmetric object you took the picture from!

Hi SAV,
I promised I would report back.....setting Key points to 40,000 and Tie points to 4000 made o material difference.  I even divided the project into chunks based on my experience with which groups of images would align.  Couldn't get chunks to align.  I am going back to basics to improve w the quality of images in hope that I will succeed and that will be the cause of my problem.

Same outcome when I set Key points to 40,000 and Tie points to 4000.  I looked at the Alignment processing report and there is not much of value there except the setting I used for the last Chunk processed.  All the graphics are pretty messed up.  What screen shots are you looking for?  Model? Single Image?

First...Awesome features in the 1.4 Beta release! Imbedding image thumbnails into Camera boxes in Model view really helps visualize which cameras are misaligned!

I think maybe I found a couple of bugs?:

1.) I tried to import a manually created Markers file exported from Photoscan Pro 1.3X into Photoscan Pro 1.4 Beta.  I got a pop-up error dialog saying "Missing Sensor ID"

2.) I tried to import a MP4 video file and got a popup dialog saying "A media resource couldn't be resolved"

Thanks SAV!  You have given me valuable direction.  I was trying to get the markers to dominate or be weighted more than the key points.  I will adhere directly to your recommendations and see where this goes.

:-\  humm..no replies.  Has anyone successfully used markers to assist alignment?  What were the max key point and tie point settings.  What quaily setting did you use?  Hi or low? What else did you have to do to successfully align the images?

General / Manually placed Markers not working

I am frustrated by the lack of effectiveness of manually placed markers to help in image alignment!  I have over 300 photos of a car that I have masked out the background and placed almost 70 manually placed markers at well defined locations.  Frequently there are 5 or more markers on each image.  I tried setting the max number of key points to 1, 5, 10, and 20.  Alignment was awful.  I broke the images into 5 chunks ensuring common markers across chunks and could not align the chunks.

I have to be doing something wrong!  Where is a good tutorial about aligning images manually

Thanks Alexy, I will try that. Am I correct in assuming Photoscan will still not use input orentation for alignment?...they will only be used for comparision with computed orientations for calculation of Reference tab?
