Feature Requests / Live Ground Classification Viewing Window

The Dense Point Cloud Ground Classification tool is great, but I find myself classifying, resetting, classifying, resetting, over and over and over again. While I understand what the 3 variable do (mostly), I always seem to have to tweak them to try and get the best results for ground classification.

A great feature to have would be the ability to sub-select a portion of your point cloud, then be able to apply nearly instantaneous changes to the cell size, angle, and vertical change variables to see how the ground classification changes based on the small changes. Once the low points are calculated based on the cell size, you could have sliders for the other 2 variables to watch how the changes affect the ground classification in real time. Then you could apply those variables to the entire dataset.

I know that the movement is towards automatic classification, but that appears to be a long way away at the moment. Having specific control over the point selection would certainly be a valuable tool to have.

Is there a way to pin a menu, add shortcuts, assign keystrokes, or anything else to reduce the constant menu navigation to the useful tools? I'm attempting to classify a point cloud and, if you've ever done this, it's a constant trial and error process.

This involves constantly going to:
    Tools->Dense Cloud->Classify Ground Points->[change parameters]->OK then Tools->Dense Cloud->Reset Classification... repeat until results are acceptable.

Having a button on the menu, or even better, an Apply option on the tool would be a much better solution. The same goes for "Select Points by Color" and "Filter Points by Class". It's a constant exercise in menu navigation and it's becoming tedious.

Is there a better way to do this, or is a Feature Request?

Are your targets unique in the sense that you didn't accidentally pick the wrong one when marking them? Are you optimizing your cameras with the GCPs selected? Those are some common errors to check.

Adding a marker by right click on desired location of the dense cloud should not yield to a floating marker.
You can also draw points on the cloud and export them as dxf

Hi GEOBIT,

While I agree that I shouldn't get a floating point, it is happening consistently and on different projects. I was hoping for a hidden "hey what's this point's location" option, but it doesn't look like one exists. Exporting dxf files and opening in another program is a workaround, but not desirable. Maybe someone will think to add this feature in the future.

This sounds like you're running out of RAM. Running 1000 images with only 8GB of RAM for 20MP imagery on High would seem to cause this error. You can watch your memory usage in Windows to see if you're hitting the top end, too.

I would go back to the big machine and figure out why your alignment is coming out so bad. Do you have ground control? Are you aligning to that or only using the camera locations? I'm assuming this is UAV data, so are you using standard GPS locations, PPK, RTK? If it's a DJI using the internal GPS, then you could have a lot of variation between the camera altitudes from flight to flight and day to day. If you're using GCPs, do you have the cameras unchecked when you're optimizing? There are a lot of factors that can cause what you're getting for results.

Is there a way to get specific point data from the point cloud? I would like to be able to select a specific point and extract that positional information.

The only other answers that I've seen to this question suggest that you should add a marker and look at the estimated position. This works for the horizontal data, but the marker usually winds up floating well above the actual point cloud. Adding a marker to the mesh seems to be correct in the horizontal and vertical, but the mesh often doesn't contain the information that we need. Thanks for any help!

Hello JasonR,

Could you please describe your project, what type of the project is that (aerial or close range)?

These are aerial images taken from a large format (240MP, Leica DMC IIe 230), taken from a fixed wing aircraft. There are individual sensors for the RGB bands and panchromatic, etc. The raw data is processed to produce the TIFF images. Overlap is typically 80%-90%, but we often only have one flight line. Our ground sampling distance is typically 5-10cm.

Please let me know what additional information you'd like to see.

Have you tried to convert them to jpeg? There might be a limit for amount of pixels but I am not sure. Experiment with these settings, file size (convert to jpeg) amount of pixels (resize them - lower amount of pixels)....

I haven't yet, but I have a few similar sets that I've already converted to JPEG. The conversion reduced the file size from ~130MB to ~30MB. I was hoping to use the TIFFs because there was some concern about the degradation in quality, but I haven't been able to see the difference when comparing the 2 side by side. I don't know enough about image compression and formatting to know how jpeg and tiff formats compare for photogrammetry purposes.

General / Not Enough Memory

I keep getting a "not enough memory" error while processing a small number of large format images. I have 18 .tif images that are ~130MB each (14144x15552) and I hit the error when trying to generate a High quality dense point cloud. The processing log doesn't seem to indicate any additional information, but I've attached it. I took a screenshot of the Task Manager's Performance window and it shows the point cloud generation is failing at less than 50% of the available memory. (The "not enough memory" error occurred during the last bump on the right.)

Is PS calculating how much memory is needed and then predicting that I don't have enough memory, or is there something that needs to be changed?

System: Intel E5-1660, 1080 GTX 8GB, 64GB RAM, SSD, PhotoScan Pro 64-bit 1.2.6 build 2834
