General / Automatic markers - experience?
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:20:00 PM »
Does anyone have any experience using the printed markers on larger open areas with a camera pole? How large does the markers need to be to be registered by photoscan? Any experiences with high light conditions?

I have experienced issues with markers that I have made that have been impossible to identify due to reflection or tearing in the texture at the marker point.

We use a 5-7 meter camera pole to do vertical shots of excavations.

General / Archaeology and photogrammetry
« on: June 27, 2012, 10:05:18 PM »
Here is my master thesis in archaeology with a main focus on the application of photogrammetry (mainly PhotoScan) at archaeological excavations.

Abstract
"In recent years there has been a rapid development of digital photogrammetric software solutions. Archaeologists started to take note of this through the first decade in the new millennium and have started to explore the possibilities of digital photogrammetry as a tool for recording spatial data. This thesis investigates the possibilities of modern digital photogrammetry as a methodology for topographical field documentation in archaeology. The methodology is compared to what has become the main tool for topographical documentation in Norwegian rescue archaeology, the total station. Using self-developed methods for evaluating the data I have been able to determine the quality of each methodology in terms of resolution and time spent recording. This evaluation shows that digital photogrammetry is by far the better choice for recording topographical data at an archaeological excavation. I have also shown some possible applications for this kind of data in both visualizing and analyzing the data."

General / Manual alignment of chunks
« on: June 26, 2012, 10:22:59 PM »
I tried looking through old posts about this and found some feature request, but that was over a year ago. Alexey, have you looked into the possibility of manually aligning and lock chunks? Is this something that is possible or perhaps in the works? This would be particularly practical when working with thin objects and very small angles.

General / No value -32767
« on: June 14, 2012, 12:48:28 AM »
I know others (and myself) have discussed this topic before but I don't feel that there has been any real solution or explanation as to why it is necessary. What I am talking about is the no data value in DEM export. I have a way of removing the negative values of -32767 from the DEM post-photoscan, but I am interested in finding out if it is possible to get rid of this altogether without having to apply external workflows to the data. I have tried exchanging the -32767 value with other positive numbers, but when opening the raster file in GIS the negative value is always there. Have anyone given this any thought? Alexey, are you guys aware of this?

General / Merge two models
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:10:21 PM »
I have two models that are of the same area but at different elevations. The top layer is of the surface and the bottom layer is of the same surface, but has parts of it excavated, so there is a square in the middle with approximately 5-10 cm height difference to the upper layer. I want to create one model containing both layers, but when I merge them the upper layer is mostly gone, with some "blobs" floating above the surface of the bottom layer. Is there a way to do this in PS or should I have a go at doing it in meshlab instead?

Both models have been georeferenced to WGS 1984 33N.

General / ECC memory and Xeon CPU
« on: May 02, 2012, 11:05:14 PM »
I am trying to do some research into whether there is any need to go full professional workstation or not, considering they are much more expensive than your average home build. Is there any real need for ECC memory when running PS? Are there any benefits of using a Xeon processor compared to an i7?

Bug Reports / Black texture
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:18:24 PM »
I have experienced that the textures generated with adaptive orthophoto and mosaic have all turned up black in PS. I am not sure if this is a hardware related issue or if it is a bug in ps. I am running ps on a HP z400 workstation with a quadro FX 1800. I can only remember getting these kinds of results with the two latest ps builds.

General / Choice of lens for shooting small objects
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:42:00 AM »
So I have been shooting some small objects for reproduction and was wondering if anyone has any experience with low-end DSLR and lenses for such. I am using a Canon D500 with the kit lens but looking to buy a new one for the porpouse of shooting small (5-10cm) objects. The problem I am having is that I find it difficult to maintain focus in the entire frame. Are there any objects that are better for this purpose? I am looking at a price range around 500 USD.

General / Quality determined by linear function?
« on: March 13, 2012, 05:19:09 PM »
I am trying to find out whether or not quality per time unit is determined by a linear function or not. On a sample of images I have made a model with all quality settings from point cloud to medium. It seems like the time spent versus the time spent can be represented as a linear function, but I am not 100% sure. Can anyone shed some light on this?

General / Setting priority in task manager for performance
« on: March 10, 2012, 12:26:20 AM »
Does changing priority in task manager help on performance? I haven't thought of it before now so I haven't been able to test it. Anyone have any experience on this?

General / Calculating memory usage
« on: March 09, 2012, 06:05:48 PM »
Can anyone show how to calculate estimated RAM usage when building geometry? For example, X number of photos at Y size times Z quality equals A memory.

General / Exporting pdf with user rights enabled
« on: February 24, 2012, 03:46:22 PM »
Is there any way to export a 3d model from photoscan with user rights enabled by default or is it necessary to go through adobe acrobat pro or similar to enable them manually.

Models cannot be measured in adobe reader (free version) unless the user rights are enabled.

General / importing cameras
« on: February 07, 2012, 12:18:50 PM »
I have a project that didn't really work in photoscan. Ran it through microsoft photosynth and got a slightly better result. But I only got a pointcloud and need to mesh it, but using meshlab didn't work that well so I figured I'd import it to photoscan and do it there. The question is how do I do this? I tried importing only the pointcloud but it didn't work so I tried importing the camera positions. The problem was that the camera positions gained from photosynth are in .csv, not .out or .xml. How can I use the csv file with photoscan?

General / Exporting google kml/kmz
« on: January 27, 2012, 11:32:54 AM »
I tested the google format today, but I must say I am a bit confused. What is supposed to happen if you open the file in google earth? Is it only there to indicate global position or is it supposed to show the texture on the ground? Because it only did the first.

I haven't used google earth before for anything other than flying around, I was just curious if the exported model could be viewed there. Or on google maps.
