Face and Body Scanning / Re: Type of pattern projection

However, this will kill my diffuse illumination set up, is it worth it ?
A really high lumen projector usually costs more. Isnt it better to use a strobe light projection ? with a flash attached to a 50mm lens for example ? (or even wider) (and a slide ofc)

- From what i?ve read on the forum, strobe light projection have more advantages to DLP projection method.

Thank you for your kind responses!
Regards,
Manuel.

I use both methods and agree that a powerful projector does cost quite a lot.  I would therefore recommend that you try to use the strobe projection method first.  The downside of this method is that it takes quite a bit of experimentation to get everything setup properly, whereas with the projector the setup time is quick and easy.  The strobe method however can easily be synchronized and even delayed if needed so each method has pros & cons.

Try the strobe method first, in comparison it's inexpensive and effective!

Let us know how you get on!

The problem with the DLP projector is that its light doesnt give me enough intensity (to have a good contrast ratio) in comparison to the exposure of the flashes.

The solution is to move your projector closer to the subject -- or get hold of a projector with a higher lumen output.

Face and Body Scanning / Re: point cloud number for a full body scan
« on: December 06, 2013, 03:25:32 PM »
Hello,

Agisoft suggests to have 50+ camera for full body scan. How many points (point cloud, not dense) will be generated typically (says T-shirt + jeans)? Can anyone share your number of cameras and your corresponding point cloud number?

I want to know how the camera numbers affect the overall quality and what is the optimal camera number. Thanks.

Jim

The need for a large number of cameras has less to do with point cloud number/quality as it does with trying to combat the problems of occlusion and occluded areas of the body.  When scanning full bodies areas such as the hand, fingers, inside of arms (front and back), inside of legs (front and back), feet, top of head, etc... are areas that all require extra attention.  A large number of cameras is needed to provide coverage for these typically "hidden" areas.  You could probably do a body scan with less cameras but you would also have areas of missing data that you would have to deal with later in post.  50 cameras is probably about the minimum for doing full body scans with a workable amount of coverage... 50 to 100 cameras is even better.

girl  ;) ;)

Hey, great job!

Still, this example begs the question... why is your initial data so noisy to begin with?   :o

Seems like trying to improve your data on the front end would save a lot of needless work on the back end.

Regardless, really impressive work and obviously a huge improvement!

This guy seems to only use UAVs with GoPro...

Yes, it is possible but the results are often less than ideal for all of the reasons discussed in numerous threads on this forum previously.  Do a search of the forum and you will understand why the GoPro isn't such a good option.

This seems to be a major issue with the "Standard" version of the software to be quite honest and something that I am hearing more and more users complain about.  I totally understand that there is a big price differential between the Standard and Pro versions of the software.  However, I think in the minds of most users (and certainly prospective customers) one would expect to at least be able to be able to properly orient and/or reorient the model in world space.  I would therefore like to respectfully ask the developers to re-think this issue in particular and consider adding such functionality to the standard version.  Honestly, it is something that is so important and much needed.

Helllo all, what sort of sw can open OBJ file with pointcloud inside ? if can solve this puzzle, then can create pointlouds/mesh from video......

I can open your .obj file with the point cloud in Lightwave 9.x with no problem whatsoever.

Hello all, have googled few things, will put it together and present it here in next few days....... Some interesting stuff for learning and eventualy testing....

Awesome Wishgranter!

I am always interested in your research.

Face and Body Scanning / 4D Scanning?
« on: February 13, 2013, 02:22:34 PM »
I'm interested in trying to do 4D scanning with Agisoft.  Can anyone who has done it (or knows how to do it) explain to me what is required and provide me with step-by-step by instructions regarding the procedure?

I really would like to learn more about how to do this and would appreciate any help that the community could provide.

Thanks!

Greetings,

Mr. Curious

Really I think this issue needs to be addressed in Standard Version as a basic requirement. Users really need to be able to control a scenes scale, orientation and position to how they need. Possibly along with a grid layout which can be visually controlled with scale, number of squares etc. With an indication to x,y,z and 0,0,0 in worldspace.

Related to this Feature request:

Having to input numbers and matrices is too complex. We need a UI tool. Luckily I have some scripts (thanks to Alexey and his team) to do it using the Region box but it's not ideal and only works for Pro.

+1  I totally agree !!!

Face and Body Scanning / Re: Portrait rig experimentation.
« on: January 22, 2013, 07:33:30 PM »
I agree with Mr. Curious but want to stress that "bright lighting" is too simple: ideally, the lighting should be such that small detail (e.g. skin pores in this case) will be enhanced rather than subdued in the images. Visually smooth surfaces are really difficult because PhotoScan needs to be able to detect features. Experimentation with multi-directional vs. homogenous diffuse lighting might be interesting in this respect.

The reason bright light is highlighted here is because of the experimentation with continuous light. To mimic the same light levels one gets with flash light which is VERY bright but at a short burst of time, anything around 1/10,000th of a second. To match that same level of light to use similar camera settings, low ISO (very important) but high exposure speed 1/100th you need bright light just to match that same quality. Obviously not over bright as this will wash out any details. The alternative is noise projection but this introduces other problems of being able to capture a color pass quickly straight after, or using additional separate texture cameras. Multi directional lighting is possible but you need VERY fast capture if you are doing scanning of live subjects.

Hello,

I agree my response of saying just "bright lighting" was an over simplification on my part.  However, Lee did a perfect job of translating what I intended to say between the lines.  Thanks Lee, you put things far better than I could have!

Mr. Curious

I'll see what happens when it turns up...it's going to be a birthday present so i can't really kick up a fuss about it..that would be very ungrateful.

Even if the WiFi turns out to be a pain I'm not that concerned, it's not like I've gone an ordered 20 of them and I could do with a smaller but good quality camera to have for everyday use rather than lugging a Canon DSLR about all the time.

I am very interested to hear your results and thoughts about this camera.  Please keep us posted!

Greetings,

Mr. Curious

I have to agree with Lee also..... Low ISO, bright lighting and sharp images are the key to success.
