General / Re: Photoscan non-pro, alignment of cloud methods?

Same here, usually upside down. Happy there is the rotate object tool to at least get things oriented better before exporting.

Yes, cheers Paul, that just worked perfectly for some very quickly shot humanoids. ;-) I was getting much worse camera alignment with more points in the camera alignment.

Thanks! -Chad

If you search through the forums, you should be able to find some previous discussions...a few that come to mind are sketchfab.com, verold.com, and p3d.in

Feature Requests / Re: Photoscan Professional "Artist" Edition

Agreed, it is great that Alexey and team are open to discussion on this and many other subjects in the forums. It is rare to see, and much appreciated.
However, it is still a disappointment to be left with the same options.

I think what makes it difficult is the vast price differential between the two versions of software. I can completely understand not wanting to cannibalize sales of your premium level product by not having enough feature separation between the two versions. But I don't think I have ever seen a larger difference in prices between a 'basic' and 'premium' version of software. It is a nearly 2000% price increase.

The pro version has some fairly important features (as indicated in this thread) to people who are working to create digital assets (games, cultural heritage, etc). Yet the price is much higher than other prices of software that are normally in the asset building pipeline (Zbrush, Mudbox, 3DCoat, etc). I understand that I am sort of talking 'apples and oranges' here, and that in the area of digital acquisition (laser scanners, structured light scanners, etc) the pricing for tools in that pipeline run much higher (and even far beyond the PS pro price).

I guess for many of us, we are just hoping there is some solution that can help bridge the gap.

Cheers, -C

<sigh> There is always some vehincle parked in front of these historical buildings...even in 3D.  ;-)

How was that conference, BTW? Anything interesting?

Hi Frejus,

I thought I would send a pic of the project I did (also in the South of France, nobody to bother me while shooting in this remote area!). It is probably more photos than I needed, but at least it shows the variety of angles I captured with the multicopter. It was mainly an experiment to see what I could capture with a basic DJI Phantom and Canon point and shoot camera, and it generally worked well. I didn't have a lot of control over the shooting, as it was using an intervalometer and I didn't always have a great FPV view...so I just sort of flew it around as systematically as I could.

I used a bunch of batteries for the flights, which were not too expensive by purchasing 3rd party batteries from here (they have a warehouse in the UK in addition to others):
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/index.asp

They were about a third of the price of the DJI batteries...which meant a lot more flying time for the money.

Good luck and I hope you are able to get it to work out, it would be great to see the results!

Cheers, -Chad

I don't know if your camera angles are exactly horizontal and vertical (ie. 90 degrees from each other), but I would think a 45 degree angle would split the difference between the two sets of images and help Photoscan find the correlation between them. I believe the general guidance is that any particular point should be visible in at least three photos (and in your case, between the two sets of images).

Ah yes, you are likely correct James, that makes much more sense. I did a couple of multicopter tests (including a church) and photographed with multiple angle settings on the camera mount, emulating the same process for objects I would normally photograph on the ground or in a studio setup.

I think Photoscan should correctly interpret the photo orientation as long as your camera is passing it along in the EXIF metadata; and thus allow you to mix orientations in a project. Do the vertical photos appear vertical in the photos window in Photoscan? You might try rotating them manually in Photoscan (the middle two tools at the top of the Photos panel) if they are not already vertical.

General / Re: Importing meshes: workflow options.
« on: May 31, 2014, 10:20:00 AM »
I've been fairly impressed with Meshmixer...it seems to give you a nice amount of control over smoothing and reducing resolution interactively, and it has some nice repair/solidifying functions. I've re-imported and re-textured in Photoscan with nice results. It doesn't seem to choke too heavily on dense geometry, either.

One drawback of Meshmixer is that you seem to lose your imported texture once you start refining the mesh, it just turns to a flat shade solid color in those areas. It's also somewhat buggy, although not as much as Meshlab. (at least in MacOS)

I wonder what it will turn out to become as a final product from Autodesk, though...pricing, etc.

Following up:
I've done a couple of tests with and without shadow/highlight adjustments and so far on a couple of projects and so far I haven't seen much of a difference.
So there goes my theory. ;-)
Maybe I just need to find a more extreme example.

Have you tried right-clicking on a photo and choosing 'Change Path...' from the popup menu? That should allow you to pick a diffferent directory for your images.

I usually try to reduce contrast as opposed to increase it. (ie. increase shadow boost, reduce highlights)
However, I haven't done a thorough or methodical comparison to really judge exactly how much of an improvement I am getting. (another item for the to-do list)
I believe I am usually seeing less cloud/geometry noise in the deep shadow areas, though.

It's called 'Fill Light' in the more recent versions of LR or ACR.
I use it quite a bit along with Recovery to help flatten contrast which Photoscan seems to appreciate.

Has anyone had the chance to test out any of the the new MacPro flavors with dual GPU's?
