General / Re: One Titan or 2xAMD 7970's ?
« on: November 20, 2013, 11:43:42 PM »
Alaxay,
Thank you for this clarification !! Really valuable!  8)

This leads me to the conclusion that (assuming that Nvidia cards support at least OpenCL 1.1 or 1.0) for now , the AMD GPU cards support of OpenCL 1.2 does not automatically make them more suited for PhotoScan computing tasks in comparision with Nvidia cards.

To other readers:
I speak totally without own experience on the subject, and greatly appreciate any info on this subject. I still have not decided what GPU?s to buy. I intend to invest a considerable amount of $ in a PhotoScan (and Adobe) workstation and the information available on this forum helps me use my money wisely.  :)  Thank you all!

Alexey Pasumansky (Agisoft),

I strongly believe that we are quite a number of forum participants here that would be VERY VERY interested to learn about your experience/ opinion on the subject of OpenCL support (AMD/Nvidia) in the context of PhotoScan application. E.g. how big calculation advantage does the OpenCL 1.2 offer (used by PS software) compared to older version (Nvidia current version support)?

As you are surely aware of, the Agisoft hardware wiki has not been updated since one year, and therefore one might assume that it is not fully up to date these matters...  ;)
(I you already commented on this, sorry, I could not find it.)

Thank you in advance/ Tom

ps. And thank you Wishgranter and other guys for sharing your knowledge and experiences!  :)

pps. Anyone tried the Radeon R9 290X yet?

So what do you guys think about using the Radeon HD 7990 6GB GDDR5? (2 x Tahiti XT2 on internal Crossfire)?

And what about using two HD 7990?

Good idea / bad idea?   ???

19
Point taken regarding Nvidia OpenCL driver age/ support.
Wishgranter - Would you mind providing a few links of your recommendation where one could read up on this interesting subject?

Then has it been demonstrated / proven that this crippledness of Nvidia OpenCL has significant effect on PS computing performance? Or could it be that PS does not utilize the performance made possible by newer generation OpenCL drivers, and therefore work well with the older Nvidia drivers, still?

(Just asking and speculating, personally I know nothing about this subject. In persuit of the "truth"  ;)"

Diego, thanks for info.

General / Re: Agisoft PhotoScan 1.0.0 pre-release

Buying a PhotoScan Pro license and starting up production, would you recommend starting out with the 1.0.0 pre release right away, or better begin with the "old" released version until official release?

Is there an estimate date for official release of the 1.0.0 (or best guess)?

Tom

Guys - very interesting comparision data!  :D

Wishgranter - what Tahiti card were you using, specifically? (7970 / 7990 / ...)

Diego, obviously your Quadro K4000 is far behind the two GTX 580s at PS depth construction.
Are you keeping the Quadro for quad buffer stereoscopic 3D display feature or for other reasons?
(...asking because I consider a Quadro, mainly for the mentioned reason. Well, in parallel with one or two other "faster" GPU?s).

 ??? Agosoft still recommend Nvidia cards in Recommended hardware;
http://www.agisoft.ru/wiki/PhotoScan/Tips_and_Tricks#Recommended_Hardware

This info about AMD being better for the purpose is new info to me. And of big interest too, since I have yet to do decide on my workstation investment...

Any comment from Agisoft reps. on this matter?

/Tom

@Oli63 - thank you for this information - really valuable!

Then I conclude that the 16mm lens is at least sharp enough to bring out the benefit of the 24MP sensor -  making visible difference in the presented image Mosaic.

The trigger solution is creative, if I just knew where to find an expert to open it up an solder the wires. When you trigger, do you connect all three together at once, or do you apply a slight delay between focus and trigger?

This NEX-9 will certainly attract my attention once it is available  8)

From a Sony NEX-7 with their 16 mm lens. Works fine.

A bit off topic... But I would very much like to know   (if you would care to share  :) ):
@Oli63
    • what is your opinion on the sharpness of this lens?
    • Preferred aperture?
    • And what do you think about the NEX-7 sensor with regards to ISO and noise?
    • More specific, does this setup work well also in relative low light operations?
    • Finally, what method do you use for trigger Control?
Yes - I am considering to buy the NEX-7 for aerial image aquisition, therefore my interest  :D
    Thanks in advance / Tom

General / Re: GIS Sputnik - PhotoScan Compatible 3D Geobrowser
« on: September 03, 2013, 04:59:37 PM »
Hi @drykovanov

I will soon invest in a workstation to use with Agisoft and most likely the GIS Sputnik.

Can you please provide any recommendations on what Graphics cards to use (and what to avoid) to support high 3D rendering performance in the Sputnik software?
Does Sputnik support stereoscopic hardware based viewing, e.g. using NVidia 3D goggles?

(Earlier I learned that the built in Agisoft 3D stereoscopic texture viewing feature with hardware acceleration is only available for "quadro" cards...  :o)

Thanks / Tom

General / New algoritmic impact on hardware requirements?
« on: September 03, 2013, 04:12:44 PM »
The user reports regarding 1.0.0. seems very promising with regards to functionality and performance.

Does this new version somehow impact the recommended / required hardware profile?

(I know there is wiki info on hardware matters but that info is based on 0.9.1 and I figured the new version seems to perform differently?)

I will shortly invest in a workstation and I am looking for the sweet spot with regards to performance & capacity / price.
