Well, if you are not using win 8, I'm short of ideas.  ;)

The one thing that caused issues in another application was onboard ( CPU based ) graphics card. After disabling it in BIOS everything was ok.

Alex

OK, two more questions

- do you use the latest version of PhotoScan ?
- you had the latest driver the hole time ?

Hello,

in PhotoScan to to "Tools" - "Preferences..." - "OpenCL" tab and check if you have two cards listed in there. If you do, check them out and lower the "Active CPU cores" for one or two.

Hello, one issue I'm having for some time is that when I want to go to the GPU settings, PS crashes immediately.

Why is this?

Hello,

try to update your graphics card driver with a newer one.

General / Re: When to merge and align chunks?
« on: July 20, 2014, 07:15:56 PM »
You can use chunks for larger projects where there are too many pictures to process them ( because of limited computer resources, etc... ) and then align them or if you use batch process tool on several chunks, where different project reperesents one chunk.

Hello Sung-il,

UAV's ( planes, multicopters,.. ) are normally driven via some sort of autopilot ( MK, Ardupilot, Pixhawk, DJI,... ) and the camera is triggered via autopilot's output. Most of them also store GPS coordinates of the trigger event in some sort of log which can be later used for the creation of coordinate list to be used with Photoscan.

It depends which controller you are using for the multicopter. If you can not use it's logging cappabilities, than you will need to buy an external data logger which stores a location when camera is triggered. I didn't find one for my camera ( Olympus E-PL5 ), so I am designing my own.

If you will purchase that drone, then try to get sample dataset for evaluation.  I was using NEX5N and got some decent results, but replaced it because of the limited trigger options as IR is not reliable enough in higher speed flying.

NEX7 is also a nice camera, but I believe it has only an IR remote trigger option or direct servo push trigger ( or hacked trigger button  8) )

I would suggest a camera with direct trigger option ( remote port or LANC trigger option ). You might check A7, A7R or A6000.

Hello,

I think it happens when Photoscan can't tie the points together, mainly on vegetation, trees,... It happens to me also. It might help if you would use more than 65% overlap. I think around 80% overlap and 60%+ side overlap is recommended.

Alex

+1 for the driver check. If they are latest, try an older version.

I figure it should be as you are using enough gcp's, but I guess someone else here can give a better answer as I always use geotagged pictures.  ;D

Hello,

If you have geotagged pictures, the alignment of them is much faster.

Depending on the camera you intend to use, there are several external GPS tagging devices, even if you could not get the positions out of your flightcontroller.

Alex

General / Re: advice about using Canon S100 for UAV maping
« on: January 07, 2014, 12:23:49 PM »
Hello Charly,

auto mode is not an optimal mode to use for the puropose. I don't own it, so I can not give you detailed info, but try to use Tv (shutter priority) or M  (manual settings) and use faster shutter times - 1/800, 1/1000, 1/1250, 1/1600, depending of the platform (plane, multirotor). Well, travelling speed of the platform.  :)

There are better cameras for the purpose, but it depends on what type of platform you are using them. There are several posts here that have very usefull info so I sugesst you check them out.

Best regards,

Alex

« on: January 07, 2014, 12:08:36 PM »
Yes, not enough RAM is available for the operation. Notification apperas before all RAM is used and that is why you can see 11290 MB of free RAM in task manager. I guess it does a calculation befora actuall process. It happend to me also  :). I think hard drive size is not in question here.

I suggest you change the quality or region to process.

Hello,

don't know if it is what you are looking for, but Autodesk's Recap and Infraworks can manipulate point clowds to some degree. I guess Civil 2014 also. Like : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTM_0h6OwN8

Yes, they sure look interesting. The a7r and a7 also. Will have to wait until december when they start to ship them. I like the option of the wired remote on them.  :)

As for the lens I guess the 35 f/2.8 and the 55 f/1.8 might be usefull for the purpose. I use 17mm on the oly which makes out a 34mm euqivalent on full frame and I sometimes could use a more narrow lens. Depends on the purpose I guess.
