General / Find cameras from points in sparse cloud
« on: October 07, 2019, 04:49:25 PM »
I have had a look through the manual but cannot find how to find a way to see which cameras produced which points in the sparse cloud.

I've not really encountered problems up until now but today I generated a sparse cloud that clearly has a group of points forming a surface intersecting the rest of the correctly generated cloud - so they must have been produced by a group of cameras with bad alignment.

Is there a way I can select some of the errant points and then show the cameras/photos involved?

Or, red ticks against those that haven't aligned, which would be even better.

I see the latest version still uses grey ticks for the "aligned" photos.

Would it be possible to make these red or some other bright colour - it's really not obvious what's been aligned and what hasn't and makes going through the images to select and align any unaligned ones after a preselection much more time consuming.

Thanks!

I imagine the sequential selection means it will choose pairs which follow each other in the sequence of photos whereas estimated means it will look for large features across the range of photos for pairing. So I imagine sequential will work faster if you have taken the photos in an orderly way (such as from a drone or, as with me, photographing sculpture in a methodical way working my way around it).

But I could be totally wrong!  :-\  ;D

Dear Agisoft,

Can you explain what's • Added Sequential and Estimated reference preselection modes?

Thanks

General / Metashape - an unfortunate choice of name
« on: March 26, 2019, 10:54:55 AM »
The product is great and has improved in leaps and bounds over the years I've been using it. Keep up the good work.

However, why oh why did you choose the name "Metashape". While "Photoscan" wasn't exactly a fantastic name, at least it was memorable and also indicated what it did in the name (scanned photos, sort of). "Metashape" is just meaningless; "self-awareness of shape"??? That's got very little to do with photogrammetry. A dull, grey name that one struggles to remember.

Also unfortunate timing - last year I wrote a journal article about using photogrammetry for recording architecture and church monuments which is due to be published about now. Of course, it is called "Photoscan" in the article.

I've carried out PG with a 17mm lens. The results are ok, but I wouldn't recommend it. Normally I use a 28mm lens (that is in the 35mm world) - either on a micro-4/3 camera or FF 35mm.

I think this is a great idea. I have no use for any of the UAV features because I'm only interested in modeling architecture and sculpture. I'd also like to see the new de-lighting feature added. I certainly can't afford the pro version of PS as it currently stands, as much as I think it is a fantastic product.

Yes, the toolbar button works and the double-click in the workspace works.

Bug Reports / No longer able to view Dense Cloud in latest version
« on: January 02, 2018, 01:42:19 PM »
Version 1.4.0 build 5650.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I've just upgraded to the latest version of PS and I can no longer view the dense cloud. The menu option: Model -> View Mode -> Dense Cloud gives me another sub-menu with "Filter by selection" and "Reset filter", both of which are greyed out and neither are what I want.

Build 5076 allows viewing the dense cloud under that menu item, so either it's moved and I can't find it or it has been left out by mistake in 5650.

apintuc: as far as I'm aware and experience dictates, mesh creation is mostly dependant on number of dense cloud points. I have 32Gb of ram on Windows 10 and my limit is 50 million points, regardless of how many photos are involved (my latest project has 800, other projects as few as 80, but the limit is always 50m points).

Thanks Alexey. That's be really great.

For photogrammetry of sculpture more capabilities in dealing with the dense cloud is really the only thing I miss in what is otherwise a fantastic product.

Thanks Alexey, but I only have the standard version, so that's not a solution for me.

This is great, and thanks to the Agisoft team for continued improvement.

However - there appears to still be no way to import a dense cloud and still no way to edit a dense cloud properly (eg: no ability to view only a small section of the cloud so as to prevent selections of parts you don't want to delete).

In the case of import, seems an easy thing to do because you already allow the mesh to be exported and imported.

Currently it makes refining the end result quite difficult. If you don't want to expend effort on dense cloud edit tools then please please please add the import ability. The cloud can then be edited in an external tool and imported back in.

Feature Requests / Re: Request: Dense Cloud Filtering
« on: September 02, 2017, 01:41:51 AM »
Nearly 4 years since this thread was started. A year since I last commented. One of a few threads on this particular topic.

Come on Agisoft. Don't you ever read this forum? This doesn't appear to be very complex to implement and would make the whole application far easier to use. Either that or provide a proper sliding scale for photos rather than Ultra, High, Medium, etc.

There needs to be a way to decimate the dense point cloud.

As it stands, I can easily generate point clouds of 50 million or more points from hundreds of photos, but the whole thing dies as soon as it attempts to generate a mesh. By "dies" I mean just that - it doesn't even exit gracefully. PhotoScan just disappears, having crashed.

My limit is about 45 million points. Currently there is no way to export the cloud, decimate it, and re-import it and I'm rather baffled that this is not even available, even if there is no built in decimation or filtering.
