General / New Drone from DJI- Inspire
« on: November 13, 2014, 07:16:36 PM »
So what do you all  think of this drone for photogrammetry?  The camera specs are not that detailed.  Aspherical lens with no distortion and 94 degree they claim.  Sounds good..  4k video and 12mp stills.  Burst mode and RAW images.  The drone specs seems to be way better  than the Phantom.

General / 4K video frame grabs for photogrammetry
« on: October 09, 2014, 11:05:26 PM »
I need a faster solution then a DSLR for photogrammetry.   Have been thinking of buying one of the cheaper 4K cameras that now is on the market.  Both Panasonic and Sony now have 4K cameras for under 3000 EUR.  High quality lenses can be used.

So has anyone tried any of these cameras, Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 / Sony Alpha 7S ?  http://www.dpreview.com/previews/panasonic-dmc-gh4-sony-alpha-7s

Also black magic has a 4Kcamera.  Also open for other suggestions.   Any reason why i should not get good results?  The resolution on video at 4K is about 8mpix so not great but on the other hand i will have speed and be able to get great overlap. I could crank up the shutter speed to 1/100 or o to get better sharpness.

Anyone have experience with using video for photogrammetry?  Even if just HD i would be interested in seeing some result examples.

When i do fram grabs i guess i lose exif data?  So i have to calibrate manually or how are you dealing with this?

General / Adobe 3D PDF
« on: October 08, 2014, 10:34:35 PM »
Have tried to export 8k texture to PDF but texture does not display.  Maximum i can get working is 4K texture in PDF.  I have a Titan card with 6gb so should handle 16k.  Is there a setting in PDF or is 4K the max it will go?

Anyone else made it work with   8 k texture or more?

I am using Adobe Acrobat PRO  XI  version 11.0.09

General / Photoscan over sharpens images
« on: October 08, 2014, 12:25:49 AM »
I usually shoot RAW and convert to JPG at max quality.   I add a little sharpnes before coverting.  Looking at the images in any other viewer they look great but when i look at them in photoscan they look terribly over sharpened and grainy.  Does photscan add its own sharpening or what is going on?

Feature Requests / Align chunk / combine model and seams
« on: October 01, 2014, 12:01:56 AM »
When you align chunks and combine the models the models have unleaded seams.  I would like to request if possible that the models points are welded.  This would make it easier to edit the model in external apps.

General / Seams not welded merge and combine chuk
« on: September 30, 2014, 01:57:58 AM »
Rescent project involved 330 images.  Built mesh in  5 chunks due to RAM limit (64gb).  Merged and combined chunks using camera based option. Merged perfectly except that the chunks does not seem to be welded.  I like to run my mesh in Meshmixer before Zbrush to fill holes as it does a great job.  Not on this mesh though.  The seams are clearly visible in meshmixer and the repair tool makes it worse. Meshmixer kind of eats away on the seams and makes them horrible separating the mesh in 5 peices.   Zbrush takes care of it with dynamesh though but it would be great to fill holes and fix errors in the mesh before Zbrush.   Also tried Netfab and it had similar problems.

Is there any way of getting a seamless mesh from merging and combining chunks?  I did place a little overlap when setting the region of the chunks in PS but this  did not help.

General / Align point limit
« on: September 30, 2014, 01:29:17 AM »
Default setting is max 40.000 points when aligning images on high setting.  If set to 0 PS grabs as many points as it can.  Many of my images reach almost 200.000 points.
How does this work?  Will the sparse cloud be much more dens as a result?  The dense cloud should also become even denser as a result of this and also use more RAM?  Will setting point limit to 0 help align the images better?  What is a recommended setting?

General / Arbitrary or Height-field
« on: September 29, 2014, 06:10:31 PM »
I have never tried height field setting before.  I have scanned a 12m by 7m area with  320 images.  Have processed on High/Arbitrary. The images was taken at a 30-45degres angle. The whole area was covered in this way West to East and then again  North to South.  All images alligned.  Results with arbitrary are good.

I know i can try it instead of asking but faster to ask here.  Is height field only for image set shooting straight down or almost straight down?  Would it be worth trying height field on the above image set?  I have 64gb and in arbitrary i have to divide up in 5 chunks to process. With height field i think i could run it all on Ultra in one chunk.

General / Zbrush poly limit
« on: September 26, 2014, 05:21:17 PM »
The maximum amount of polys i seems to be able to import in to Zbrush is around 22milion.  Anyone else had better luck with higher poly counts?

In prefrences/mem i have changed max polys per mesh to 30 milion  but it does not seem to help. Any other settings that can be tweaked?

I have 64GB of RAM but as Zbrush is not 64 bit that does not help.  4R7 is coming soon with a 64 bit beta release.  Hopefully it will do a lot better.

General / Zbrush reset move/offset
« on: September 24, 2014, 10:00:00 PM »
Hi,

I need to move a scanned object to the floor in order to do a mirror and weld operation (symmetry must work) .  Anyone know of a way to reset the subtool to its orginal position after the move?  The only way i can come up with is to use Deformation and write down the Offset and rotation changes i have done and then reverse them when done with mirror and weld.  This is tedious though.  Have searched internet for answers but came up with none.  I must have missed something obvius?  Reason i want to reset the subtool to original position is to br able to texture in photoscan after modifications.

General / Aerial Photogrammetry Phantom 2
« on: June 17, 2014, 06:00:16 PM »
Hi,

Have anyone tried aerial photogrammetry with the Phanom 2 Vision + drone?  It has a 14mpix camera and can shoot RAW.  Anyone   have experience with it?

General / Color 3D printer
« on: May 22, 2014, 12:40:49 AM »
In the process of buying a 3D printer mainly for printing photoscanned archeological objects.  I need a full color printer and it must have a large print area and good resolution.

I have been looking at the 3D systems projet 660 pro.   http://www.3dsystems.com/3d-printers/professional/projet-660pro

The 660 is an expensive printer but have had models printed with it before that i was happy with.  Is this a good choice?  Does this printer have a good reputation?  What other brands are there to consider?.  Price and performance is important as well as economical prints.

General / Generating specular maps
« on: March 12, 2014, 11:57:21 AM »
Anyone have a good method for creating specular maps from the texture generated by photo scan?  I usually use crazy bump but does not work very well on the photo scan generated texture due to how the UV map looks like. The images is broken up in many sections and crazy bump don?t know what to make of it.

Normal map and displacement map is not needed i think but a specular map would be useful to get a more realistic render.

General / 3D viewer
« on: March 10, 2014, 11:12:39 PM »
Hi,

Looking for a preferably free easy to use 3D viewer with measurement tools? .  It should be really simple to use so anyone can use it and be able to display textures.   Any tips?

Meshlab seems a bit overly advanced for what i am looking for.

Also, anyone know of a tool that can easily measure circumference of an object?  Don?t think blender can?

General / Best lens
« on: February 18, 2014, 09:37:50 PM »
What lens would be best for Nikon full frame cameras?. I mainly shoot archelogcal artifacts.   I have a D800 and the obvius choise to me was the 50mm f1,4 for small to medium sized objects.  But i am not so happy with the DOF for ths application.  Smallest aperature is f16 on this lens and if you are near the object like 20cm or so the DOF is very shallow even at f16.  I often get images with less then 0.5 image quality for this reason even though i am shooting in studio with strobes on softbox and fast shutter speed 1/250 and ISO 50.

A 35mm prime would be better perhaps?
