General / Re: Using a GoPro & Photoscan

I used a GoPro for early testing pthotoscan. For objects I was getting better results with an iPhone 4s. Smaller image, but also smaller fov, so effective a higher pixel density on the subject.

http://potree.org/demo/potree_2014.12.30/examples/matterhorn.html.. Camera was a Canon S110 if they used the standard drones.

I don't think anyone was questioning the fact that GoPros will work with Photoscan, or give good results.  All of the models in this folder were made with a GoPro 3 from an aerial platform and handheld:

For aerial photomodeling, a GoPro will be better than an iphone for a variety of reasons, and I would argue even so on the ground.

I'd really like to see a comparison of the same subject photographed with an iphone, a GoPro, a point-and-shoot, and a DSLR, and then all processed in Photoscan.  ;D
maybe I'll get around to that sometime.

true, but at the expense (besides the camera itself!) of processing time (photoscan) and flight time (extra weight).  You'd likely also lose the ability to adjust the tilt of the camera in flight.

Admittedly, I haven't tried putting another camera on my phantom other than a second GoPro to shoot stereo video, so I'm only guessing.

Do you have any examples of models made with a mirrorless on your phantom MortarArt?  I've thought of mounting a Ricoh GR but can't justify the extra $600 for unknown results.

If you're using a GoPro on a Phantom, which seems pretty common these days, keep in mind that you can mount mirrorless dslrs on them too, and get much better results.

General / Re: How to mount an external camera on a Phantom 2 ?
« on: January 23, 2015, 07:05:20 PM »
Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the Phantom 2 and use a compact camera since the Gopro or the built in cameras from DJI have all too wide angles and rolling shutters.
I pretend to take advantage of the DJI phantom 2 capability to have pre set up flight paths.

Problem is I can't find any gibles for other cameras besides the GoPro. All gibles models on the DJI website are for the GoPro or for older DJI copter models.
How are you guys doing it to use the phantom 2 and other cameras besides the GoPro?

Is there any other cheap equipment combination beside this one?

Are you using a live view of the flight  as well? is this important?
I'm planning to take photos at about 30 meters high as I need a good elevation resolution around 10cm accuracy.

Thanks!

Like Nadar said, get some foam and some tape or rubber bands, strap it on, and you're good to go.   ;)
You'll probably have better luck and a more detailed answer asking this question on a UAV/phantom forum.

- rolling shetter => unaccurate restitution

This is only really a problem if you're going faster than 15m/s.  Shooting stationary or at a reasonable speed, and it's not an issue.  Just something that you have to be aware of if you're using it from an aerial platform.

All the "medium" FOV does is crop the image.  I always use 12mp wide and get perfectly good results.

I'd hardly say it's impossible.  I've "scanned" two cars before and got perfectly useable results.  You just have to use a polarizing filter and do it on a cloudy day.

He's talking about the Vision 2+
The Vision camera logs the exif and you can pull it.

MortarArt, inspired in part by your posts I'm 3d printing iterations of a 90-degree down-facing mount for an nx100 iii that can be swapped out for a h3-3d gimbal and gopro.  I think that will prove to be the most versatile setup - gopro for 4k video and photos, and the nx-100 for orthophotos.

Marco Kohv; which model did you buy for 1,200eu?

The Phantom 2, with an NX-1100 & my mount should cost less than $1,000usd.

Also; how do you get the Exif data?

Darko, the Phantom 2 can carry your camera. You don't need a Hexa for that, unless you're also using a gimbal, which is useless for photoscanning.

I sell camera mounts for that exact purpose.

Actually, a gimbal is very useful for photoscanning, if you hope to have any control over the orientation of the camera.

General / Re: Depth Filtering Mode for UAV Imagery (lots of trees)
« on: October 09, 2014, 10:40:21 PM »
Ok, I have lots of trees (40% of the area) in my 800 pics uav dataset, is it better to use mild, moderated or agressive filtering in dense cloud? At agisoft manual it reads:

Quote
If the geometry of the scene to be reconstructed is complex with numerous small details on the
foreground, then it is recommended to set Mild depth filtering mode, for important features not
to be sorted out.
If the area to be reconstructed does not contain meaningful small details, then it is reasonable to
chose Aggressive depth filtering mode to sort out most of the outliers.General workflow

Moderate depth filtering mode brings results that are in between the Mild and Aggressive
approaches. You can experiment with the setting in case you have doubts which mode to choose.

I notice almost no difference for most of my models when I change the depth filtering setting.  I usually just leave it on moderate.

I've made numerous photoscan models using a gopro as well as a DSLR+10mm lens:

I can't speak to the Vision camera, but the GoPro Hero3 Black works fine with PhotoScan.

Here are a number of my own results with Phantom2 + GoPro + H2-3D
https://sketchfab.com/matthewbrennan/folders/99e9a5ac56a7486cac430327eedc17e3

The results aren't as good as you'll get with a DSLR.  But of course, it'd take a lot more money to hoist a DSLR up in a quad.

Those models were all made with the GoPro on timelapse mode - no pulling frames from video.  Just plug the photos into Photoscan and you're good to go.

« on: August 11, 2014, 09:15:35 PM »
I only notice a difference when building the depth maps.  Building the dense point cloud still takes a huge amount of time regardless of whether I have the GPU being used:

from the log:

finished depth reconstruction in 1397.45 seconds
Device 1 performance: 83.8203 million samples/sec (CPU)
Device 2 performance: 368.878 million samples/sec (GeForce GTX 590)
Device 3 performance: 401.292 million samples/sec (GeForce GTX 590)
Total performance: 853.991 million samples/sec

That was for 375 depth maps at Medium Quality on a chunk with 430 cameras.

On another scene with 810 cameras and 730 depth maps at Medium Quality:

Device 1 performance: 104.977 million samples/sec (CPU)
Device 2 performance: 639.976 million samples/sec (Tesla k20c)
Depth maps calculated in 38 minutes

Generating the dense cloud itself still takes the most time - sometimes in excess of 60 hours (at high quality).

MR,
try searching for "bowl effect" + "photoscan", it should turn up a few threads here on the forum.
I haven't experienced it to any noticeable effect, so unfortunately I can't be of much help.

You could try re-aligning the cameras that are off-kilter, or removing them?

What GoPro model are you using?  Have you tried the lens correction or to de-fisheye the photos before bringing them into PS?  There are other threads mentioning the "bowl" effect you posted... it's not specific to just the GoPro.

Photoscan clearly does support at least the GoPro Hero 3, as evidenced by quite a few results posted here on the forum, namely in this thread.

Hello!
I did some mapping tests with the GoPro and I had no luck...
Attached is a print screen of a flight did it with the camera pointing straight down using a gimbal, photos taken every 2 sec, more than 70% overlap, 30m altitud.... hyper curved results!

I bought a kit with a non fish eye lens and I installed yestarday.
I have to adjust the focus and I will test it this week.

GoPro users will be really really happy if Agisoft supports the standard camera.
Asked to the support if they will support this camera as Pix4D did it... ;)

Those look great droscovi!  I haven't tried flying a grid with the camera straight down yet, I've only done object-oriented campaigns, but your results convinced me to go out and try it this afternoon!
