General / Aligned camera vs actual photo

trying to develop a workflow where i take a few photos in succession, including my 'hero' shots, then align in MS and generate a rough model which will only act as reference, and possibly as hidden geometry that will cast shadows on the the photo backplate

i took 22 shots of this shop facade.  in MS i aligned the photos (high setting) and then optimised.  once optimised i generated a model from depth maps (high setting, high poly)

i then exported an FBX (with cameras) and opened in MODO.  in MODO i view the scene through one of the cameras and compare to the original photo.  as you can see the result is good but not perfect (if you flick between the 2 images you will see that the alignment is good, but the position is slightly off

the sensor sized was matched in MODO, as was the focal length.  render resolution was matched to the size of the original photo

i've only tried one camera view so far, but will check a couple of others

how accurate can i expect alignment to be?

are there any other settings i should check?

in general will generated models viewed through aligned cameras match original photos?

General / different Fisheye distortion effect on alignment and model generation

i use a FE to scan house gardens from ground level and for my use am happy with the results

right now i use a Samyang 7.5mm manual focus lens on a micro four thirds body.  i just set the lens to infinity and pretty much all images are sharp but i avoid moving in closer to the subject

i'd like to change to an auto focus lens to have more flexibility and was looking at the Panasonic 8mm

looking at this review which compares the 2 lenses, you can see that the distortion is different, so to my question - will this difference in distortion be a problem (i.e. will it have a detrimental effect on alignment and model generation) and am i better off sticking with my current lens which is tried and tested?

General / possible to indicate poly count before building mesh from depth maps?

i built a mesh from depth maps (settings were both on High) and the resulting mesh is 25 million polys.

any way to know beforehand what the approx poly count will be, similar to how it works when building from dense cloud?

seems to be a lot of conflicting information on this with some saying it's a big no no, and others saying it's a must have.

is there an official view on this?

i'll be scanning a garden this week using a painters pole to get some height.  Should I use IS?

General / the manual says to avoid wide angle and fish eye - still valid?

is that still the case or was that from older versions of PS?

i'm assuming that when FE was officially supported it was OK to use them?

i've been using FE almost exclusively for my last few scans and am pretty happy with the results but confirmation is always good

General / build mesh from depth maps vs dense cloud

i'd like to build my meshes from depth maps as it saves a lot of time, but the resulting geometry is extrapolated to the point of becoming unusable.

as i missing something or is this a limitation?

see attached showing both meshes.  the mesh from dense cloud also has a texture hence the additional sharpness but it's the meshing that i'm questioning.

General / UWA micro four thirds format

hi everyone, i'm looking for a clarification please.

i have the standard edition of Photoscan.  on the manual it states that it is best to "avoid ultra-wide angle and fisheye lenses".

on these forums though i have read that using UWA lenses, and even FE lenses can be a good thing.

i use a Pen-F and an EM1 (micro 4/3 sensor) to take photos and have both FE and a 7-14mm (14-28mm 35mm equivalent) wide angle zoom, which i plan to use exclusively @ 7mm as the manual states to use zooms at min or max focal length only.

is it a problem to use such lenses?

General / scanning a garden results in 2 planes of points?

i've taken photos of a garden and have masked out sky and backgrounds.  the garden is about 50m long and 10m wide.

pictures taken with a micro four thirds camera - is this an issue?

as you can see i've ended up with 2 different planes of points.  is there a likely reason for this?
