Feature Requests / Hole filling

It would be extremely helpful if there was a hole filling tool that could be used after the model is completed and holes become evident. This tool would be applied to the final model when finished, and would be like the clone stamp tool of Photoshop, where there would be a circle that indicates where the hole needs to be filled and a line to a second circle which surrounds an area of the type of area which is to be used to fill the hole. Thanks for considering this. Without this tool it is a laborious process to fill holes, requiring the model to be exported to third party programs.

Feature Requests / Process in progress box

It would be very helpful if the Process in Progress box  could be displayed alone on the screen so that it would be possible to watch the progress of the processing of a model while the rest of the screen area is used for another application, such as word processing. I could imagine this as a thin line like the menu bar, which would be positioned along either the top, bottom, or a side, rather than the large rectangle that is currently present, which is an awkward size preventing maximum remaining screen area. With V1.4 the AgiSoft blog posted two different methods for removing backgrounds: 1. New alignment parameter for background suppression and 2. Use visibility consistent mesh generation method. When is it best to use one or the other? Why pick one or the other?

As a newbie I'm have great problems with adjusting the model so that it is oriented correctly, face forward and straight up. I've used the Object and Bounding Box rotation tools, but the adjustments don't stick; when opening up a model where I have made the adjustments it reverts to the original position of the model. In past versions the blue bounding box side denoted the bottom of the object; is the red side now the bottom?

It is my understanding that without the EXIF data PhotoScan will assume that your photo is taken with a 50 mm lens, so if you are not using a 50 mm lens than the image could be distorted if there is no EXIF data.

I greatly appreciate the replies, particularly the technical explanation of dense cloud points by James....but I don't know enough about computer terms to understand.  What does is mean "by rectifying image pairs such that epipolar lines become parallel"? How does this create the "Points" in the dense cloud, when the terminology seems to indicate that what is created are "lines", not points?

A Key Point is an ”interesting” point on  the 2D photograph which the computer program determines to be an important feature. It is often a point of high contrast or interesting texture.

From SfM Field Methods Manual, UNAVCO (Indiana University Geological Field Station) 2016:
The software identifies features present in multiple photographs, called keypoint descriptors (hereafter referred to as key points) using an algorithm called SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform). Keypoints are used to calculate the relative locations of the cameras to create a sparse “low density” point cloud. A high-density point cloud is then generated based on the locations of the sparse points and the locations of the camera.

The Key point limit sets the standard establishing how finely Photoscan is supposed to sample each photo. The number indicates upper limit of the number of feature points on a photo PhotoScan will sample and will later be used in the alignment process. The larger the number the more the number of points PhotoScan will sample, potentially increasing accuracy. Using zero value allows PhotoScan to find as many key points as possible, but it may result in a large number of unreliable points. The recommended Agisoft starting point is 40,000, though for many images a setting of 50,000 is optimal. One investigator ran tests finding that values about 40,000 do little good, though it has been found that it is possible to rescue an image by using a higher amount.

Here's just a little extra for your dime:

A Tie Point is a Key Point that can be identified on two or more images that can be used to compute a 3D position.

Tie point limit: Tie points are those points found common to the photographs. The Tie point limit sets the standard for the upper limit in the number of tie points that will be used to tie one image to another. Tie point limit parameter optimizes performance and generally does not affect model quality. Too high or too low tie point limit value may cause some parts of the dense point cloud model to be missed. Using 0 value doesn't apply any tie point filtering so can take considerable time, though can resuscitate a problematic image. The number of tie points can be reduced after the alignment process with Tools/Tie Points - Thin Point Cloud. The sparse point cloud will be thinned, yet the alignment will remain unchanged. The recommended amount is 4,000, increasing if the object is small and there is a need for high accuracy. Some recommend using a Tie Point Limit of 0. Some have found that there is little savings in time with a broad range of values.

As a newbie I don't understand why there are a different number of points in the point cloud and dense cloud. What does each represent and what occurs when the dense cloud is created from the point cloud? Thanks.
