General / Re: CPU and GPU benchmarks

CUDA cards don't show any improvement over basic openCL cards like the GTX's.  I am using a quadro k4000 and two 580 GTX's and the 580's are exactly double the performance of the quadro.  Since, as Alexey mentioned to me in an email recently:
Quote
As for the graphic cards, professional class cards from Quadro series are optimized mostly for CAD applications and double-precision calculations that are not actually used by PhotoScan. So high-end gamer cards show much better performance due to higher number of GPU cores and frequency. Tesla cards will show similar performance to the recommended gamer-class GPUs, but will cost much more.

I want full GPU utilization on one scan at a time though.  But thanks!

Feature Requests / Batch Process - Add "Load file" or...
« on: January 12, 2015, 12:06:44 AM »
Ok so here's my current dillemma.  I'm doing a bunch of testing using batch to process things differently and save off chunks to versioned files so I don't destroy data.  I'd love for photoscan to keep the opened file current.  For instance, I've told batch to save the project as v0009 and this is coming from v0007.  After it batches, it still says v0007 is open eventhough technically the data that is present is a result of v0009's options.

I can see the logic here.  It's a great way to fire off revisions, but I'd love the option to load the test versions.  Basically I want to batch 5 different processing options which requires opening/saving versioned files.

Can this be added?  Thanks!

One other reference.. this is a 341 camera scan of the interior of an old grungy warehouse with the ceiling caving in, etc.

Not helpful for the facial scanning I guess, but this is just part of how high scans can get.  Glad I built this mega-rig.  :)

Ha yeah, I just found it.  This might work for that idea I mentioned in my email.  Thanks for the reply!

Wait.. sorry to chime in here but.. change paths?  I emailed you about this this morning Alexey.  Does this exist in the standard edition?  Sounds like what I'm after.  I'll dig through the manual again, but I missed it thus far.

Ah, I'm from michigan.  Hope they work out.  I'm pretty happy.  One thing I noticed is that the battery gage only seems to work right when the power is on but the intensity knob is all the way off.  But hey.. cheap is cheap ;)

for GPU speed reference.  These cards were introduced in november of 2010... The quadro much later and supposedly superior for openCL calculations.  Don't believe the hype.  I can't wait to get 5 x 970's in this system.

This is an attachment of my last scan showing the utilization of the hardware.  You can see how a 4 year old GTX just demolishes a fairly new Quadro K4000.  These are the 1.5gb 580GTX's from EVGA.  5 active cores on the CPU from a dual quad setup.  I'll be testing a Tesla within the next couple of days.

It seems like the 4d mode in the professional version would allow this if I read the manual correctly, but man.. the price gap between the two versions is insanely large for what it offers.

These get pretty bright.  I lit an almost dark room with two of them from about 8' enough to scan.  I'd start with two.  That seller shipped them rather quickly as well, so if you needed more, it'd be a quick ordeal I'd think.  you aren't in the LA area are you?

I am not scanning people, and I cannot disclose much information about my rig unfortunately.

I can attest that these lights will work wonderfully for illumination.  Anything more specific, and I just recommend picking one up and messing with it.  Just a note, but you will want to get batteries like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/300610399231?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

as it comes with a rather bulky 6xAA battery enclosure.

And yes.. even with my typical photography rig (I'm a professional photographer as well), and the highest quality gear (my studio strobes are Elinchrom BXRI500's) I get a one in ten fail on the remote triggers.  It's just the nature of the beast with strobes which is why I highly recommend you pick up a solution like this, or go the kinoflo route.  That's what we used in the feature film biz for photographing actor's faces.

Hope it helps!

These are fantastic, light, and use good batteries you can find for cheap on ebay.  Two color temperatures, cheap, and already pre-diffused.

I'm using them.

Ok thanks.  I just wasn't sure if it was a view glitch or if they were actually not available.  Good to know.  Thanks.

None of my GPUs show up in the openCL dialog.  Is this merely a display glitch or are they disabled somehow due to the remote desktop connection?

I built a monster of a machine, 256gigs of ram, dual quadcores, 2x 580 GTXs, 1x Quadro K4000... but it's kind of a server, and my best option is to remote in and operate, but I am concerned that the GPUs aren't working right.  What's the best way to check if this is just a display bug?  When I go to openCL there is nothing shown, but If I manually go to the box, it shows all three GPUs fine.
