Hi again Mak,

Thank you very much! I'll do it right away.

Regards.

Is it possible to share the project in PSZ format with the alignment results and applied masks and the original images, so that we could try to suggest the proper workflow for such project?

Hello Alexey,

Yes of course, that would be excellent! I only can't share it publicly, but if there's an email I can send it to, I'd be happy to do that.

Regards

Carlos,

Why don't you try to delete the unwanted points manually using the free-form selection tool in addition to "select points by color" ? It should literally take only a few minutes and give you better results.

Mak

This would definitely not take just a few minutes, it would rather take days. There are too many points, and they're too close to the model of the skull for me to remove them manually, it's just not feasible. I've tried to select points by color as well, but it also selects parts of the skull, even if I lower the tolerance. But it makes me reduce the tolerance to such a degree that it barely selects any points and I'd still have to do pretty much all the work manually...

The best way would be to decrease the selection generated by the masks, since they were perfectly adjusted to the skull. If this function exists, of course.

Have you tried to apply the mask from background images to the subsets of the photos (top and bottom parts) after alignment and prior to the dense cloud generation?

Hi Alexey,

This is the selection generated from the masks. It's a shame because the selection includes parts of the skull as well, even though the masks are perfect. Isn't there a way to decrease the selection a bit? If there is, then the problem would be solved.

Regards.

Hello Alexey,

Thank you for your help. Yes I've manually masked about 50 photos out of 500. And after generating the Dense Cloud, I've tried to "Select Points by Masks", but doing it this way it also selects parts of the skull... Is there maybe a way to edit and decrease this selection obtained from the masks?

I've tried building the mesh with depth maps, but the turntable also appears in the model.

Does anyone have an idea?

Hi there!

Thanks for you answer. Yes it's a plain white background. I'm indeed using a turntable. I can't mask every photo because there are 500 photos in total. I've tried masking them automatically with photos of just the background (without the skull), but since these masks aren't perfect, every time I've tried it this way there were lots of problems when aligning...

Hello everyone,

I have scanned a skull, aligned the photos, and now I've just created the dense point cloud. But the background is included in the model in such a way that it's impossible to manually remove it. Is there a way of doing this? Perhaps a step I've missed?

Thank you in advance to everyone for their help.

Best regards,
Carlos

Anyone that could help me, please? It's quite urgent because I have a deadline... Any help is much appreciated.

Hello,

I have created the dense point cloud, and to view it I wanted to press the "Dense Point Cloud" button, but it is not clickable, as if I still hadn't created it. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Regards,
Carlos

Hi! Thanks a lot for answering!

I tried that, yes. I wrote the name of the photo (first with and then without the extension), but an error dialog always appears which says: "Can't open file: the system can't find the specified file...". And I'm sure I picked the right folder.

Thank you for sending me that link, I'll definitely do it that way.

Regards.

General / Mask multiple images at once with one same image
« on: October 07, 2019, 08:02:50 PM »
Hi everyone,

I've photographed a skull with a turntable, and prior to taking a series of photos I took a photo of the turntable without the skull, to use this photo to mask the images. I have so far been able to mask single images with this photo, but I can't mask the whole series of photos with it. It seems that when I want to mask multiple photos, the program expects there to be masks of the same name as the photo it has to mask, but since it was made with a turntable, only one photo without the skull is necessary. How can I use one same photo to create masks on multiple images at once?

When I select the images I want to mask, I right click and choose "Import Masks", in the dialog that opens, I've chosen the following options:

  • Method: From background
    Operation: Replacement
    Filename template: (?)
    Tolerance: 20

    Apply to: All cameras

Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Regards,
Carlos

To apply the same mask file for the whole chunk or workspace you just need to use static template in the corresponding field of the Import Masks dialog:

Hi Alexey,

I've also tried this method, but the program still doesn't want to apply the photo. I'd have to do it one by one. I have created a chunk with the images on which I want to apply the same mask. When the dialog appears, it doesn't ask "import masks for:", the fields are the following:

  • Method: From background
    Operation: Replacement
    Filename template: ????
    Tolerance: 20

    Apply to: All cameras

But when I click okay, another dialog appears and says: "Can't open file: the system can't find the specified file..."

What can I do to solve this problem? Thank you in advance.

Greetings,
Carlos

I would suggest this you generate the mesh by using the new depth-maps based method
Mak

Hello Mak, thanks for your reply.

I definitely want to try out that method. I'm completely new to Metashape, do I have to create a depth map previously? And where can I find the depth-maps based method it in the program?

Regards.

Hello Alexey,

Thank you for creating the model, I really appreciate all your help.

So, the 27 hour-long process is due to the lack of a discrete GPU - I'll take that into account the day I end up buying my next computer.

In any case, I have also just finished creating the dense cloud and mesh. I've added a screenshot of it. I have another question about the results. I'm not sure if I can ask it here or if I have to start a new topic. The skull has several holes, but as you can see in the circle, in its right eye socket it has an extra hole that is not present in the real skull. I have tried several ways of closing it: building the mesh with "interpolation enabled" and with "extrapolation", as well as with the "close holes" tool, trying with various percentages. None were able to close that hole. I have also tried by creating the mesh with different amounts of faces. Are there other ways of closing it?

Thanks again.
