General / Structured lights scans aligned in Metashape
« on: July 10, 2021, 10:44:29 PM »
Structured light scanner can capture also a photo. At the end of the process we have photo and poit cloud. How prepare these data to align it in Metashape like lidar scans with 360 panorama ?

From my experience this feature doesn't work very well. In general blurry photos are have lower values but not always. Sometimes sharp  photos will have low values or even 0 value. A the same time noisy image can get high score.

It is at the botton on my post

Using lens calibration made in 1.6.3 in 1.6.2 wil cause this type of the error.

Metashape standart 1.6.2

Samyang 8mm (manual lens so missing exif info) on sony 6400. ARW exported to TIFF

1. Correcting image orientation to "horisontal" on every photo (skipping this step doesnt help)
2. ARW -> TIFF
3. Import photos and calibration
4. Alignment is fine
5. Point cloud and colors fine
7. Mesh fine
8. Texutre- fails

What can I do?

I was using lens calibration made in 1.6.3 in 1.6.2. That caused the error.

General / Real-time alignment
« on: June 22, 2020, 05:33:32 PM »
With feature "keep key points" we can constantly add photos to the alignment. If we could automatically refresh data set and automatically align the photos it would be possible to shoot and align the photos at the same time. Is it possible?

I will ask him when we'll talk. By the way, you have inspired me. I will take a look if it is possible to create something simple with GUI

This is what I'm talking about. He knows for sure everything that is on the market as he did researches. You don't think for sure that someone will give you anything else than just a recommendation during one phone call :). I know that he used RTIbuilder from CHI at the beginning (I did too) but as that was quite limited and old he switched to something else, also open source but I can't help you what was that because I don't know. If you have time you can search the net and it is sure you will find it too as he does. Good luck!

As I said there is code, you don't need to write it. You can look at CHI website they have RTIbuilder but it won't process 8k. If you want I can contact you with my friend from Wroclaw University that implemented a more developed RTI option without limit of data processing. But it will cost you a bit, he is insanely busy, especially when now he is finishing the prototype of RTI machine. But I think one consultation will be enough to help you with your problems.

Rti is Just a name for the process that uses polynominal  texture mapping. You can find ptm code that will process large file but PTM is calibrated what means that You need to know light positions. What substance is using IMO is uncalibrated photometric stereo. There  is plenty of code and papers about these techniques. Knowing the names You should be able to find what You need.

It would be awesome as Metashape is 360 stitching beast and with properly working exporter and two or three simple features it will be one of the best if not the best 360 software on the market.

Sure :)

I think is also exporter related issue because when I'm exporting only one photo from panorama it is visible too.

I know this software. I'm just trying to find the best way to create gigapixel panoramas and compared a few software. At the moment I didn't see anything with accuracy and speed even close to Metashape. I don't even need to check my panorama, I know it is stitched well.

1300 photos is not a huge project. You should easily process it in one day.

You can try online services or buy a PC. For 19K dollars is will be super easy. I think for 3K you will create a monster that will process it in hours.

AMD CPU take a look at new Ryzen 9 series 12 thread
RTX 2080TI - if money doesn't matter you can double it but there is no significant change. I would say that 2070 will be enought.
64gb or 128gb of ram and a fast SSD as Virtual Memory - but must be plugged in the motherboard to achieve higher speed
and the "rest"

If it is not fast enough, buy two or four of those and use networking. This setup will give you the possibility to calculate not 1300 photos but 130000. 1,5k I do at my station and It is a bit weaker than the spec I gave.

What I propose is to change your way of taking photos.

Place your keyboard on the table. Take the photos from the top. Then go around the table and take the photos of the sides. Flip the keyboard and repeat the process.

Create two chunks in metashape. Align them separately. Create low poly mesh and cut it just 1 mm above the table. In photo panel import mask and as a source use a mesh. You can place all photos in one chunk or you can align chunks by points. In align panel use "apply mask to key points". It should work. If not create two models with desired resolution and register then in external software. You can do it on the point cloud level or mesh. It depends on you.

If you want to do it in one chunk: put everything together in one chunk. Create a few masks. Use "apply the mask to the tie points" and align the model.

If overlaps between the bottom and top of the keyboard are not enough to align photos properly, place your keyboard horizontally and use the first method I mentioned. You can build for example a Lego holder. This will work for sure.

Good luck :)
