General / Re: Mesh from Dense Point Cloud vs. Depth Maps

Unfortunately, the mess that is being created is too complex to be manually deleted and repaired.

Bug Reports / Re: 1.8 beta crashing a lot
« on: October 14, 2021, 07:47:55 PM »
Well, good news & bad news:

GOOD NEWS:  I ran 3 chunks on Ultra Quality and they all executed perfectly with no crashing.  I'll run some more just to be sure, but previously there's almost no way it would have made it through 3 without crashing.

BAD NEWS:  The geometry that it is generating is still unusable.  All 3 of the resulting meshes had that same blobby excess geometry on the underside of the mesh, and since most of those blobs were physically connected to the valid geometry there is no way to remove them.  Therefore, I still cannot use this version :(

Thanks,

-Brian

I will runs some tests this morning, thanks.  Does the new build fix any of the issues with the blobby layer of geometry being generated on the underside of everything?

General / Mesh from Dense Point Cloud vs. Depth Maps
« on: October 05, 2021, 02:30:43 AM »
For the last 9 months that I've been using Metashape I have been generating my Meshes from the Depth Maps, mainly because it's faster.  However, something broke with 1.7.4 and 1.8 beta which is causing all sorts of blobs to appear on the underside of my meshes when generated from Depth Maps.  The blobs are impossible to remove, thus, leaving me with unusable meshes.

However, if I generate my meshes from a Dense Point Cloud everything is perfectly fine.  So, for now I'm staying with v1.7.3 so I can use the Depth Maps, but inevitably I will need to upgrade and will therefore be forced to use Dense Point Clouds.

So, my question is this:  generally speaking which method gives the most accurate and detailed results?  I've read conflicting information on the topic.  Some people say Depth Maps are best in every way while others say Dense Clouds are better for details despite the extra noise.  What say you guys?

General / How to reset Warning Messages?
« on: October 03, 2021, 03:46:43 AM »
I'm wondering if it is possible to turn back on those warning messages that had the "Do not show again" check box.  I did that on a warning that I actually need to have appear, but I cannot seem to figure out where I can re-enable it.

Thanks

General / Re: How to run a .py Script

It seems like Metashape should have the ability to do all of this on its own.  I mean it already does various forms of filtering on its own, so why not have another filter setting that lets it do all if this automatically under the hood?  While it’s nice to have manual control too, it seems a pretty simple algorithm could figure out how to get pretty darn close to what a human would choose to do manually.

Thanks!  Very helpful info!  The main reason I'm hoping to automate it is because I often Batch process these things for multiple scans overnight.  I load up a bunch of scans into different Chunks and then let the Batch go to work on it while I'm asleep.  If I have to break it up and do any of it manually it nixes that :(

Bummer  :(   So, on a related note, is there any way with the Standard version to automate the process of removing tie points and optimizing the camera parameters?  I found a great Python script online for doing this:  https://figshare.com/articles/code/Agisoft_Metashape_Python_Script_to_Automate_Gradual_Selection_Camera_Optimization_and_Error_Reduction_Steps/10325909

Unfortunately, I cannot run it with my Standard version of MetaShape.  I really wish that this capability (a more simplified version) was available as a Batch option.  If the Batch option had a simple dialog with simple options for performing this cleanup/optimization task it would really be helpful.

I wish I could afford the Pro version, but my little home 3D printing business doesn't even make as much as MetaShape Pro costs :(

Thanks,

-Brian

General / How to run a .py Script

I keep seeing references to the ability to run a Python script from the Tools menu or from a Batch, but I'm not seeing it.  Is this feature not available in the Standard version of Metashape?

Thanks,

Bug Reports / Re: 1.7.4 Holes in mesh
« on: September 29, 2021, 01:11:49 AM »
I may have been wrong about 1.8 beta fixing the mesh weirdness that got introduced in 1.7.4.  I've been running tests today and I'm having a chronic problem with it just like in 1.7.4.  Had to go back to 1.7.3 for now.

It seems to crash a lot less if I use High quality during Depth Map generation.  Crashes almost every time with Ultra quality.

My Mac Pro has two AMD Radeon HD - FirePro D300 GPU's.  I will try running a CPU-only scan overnight and see what happens.  I'm running Mac OS 11.6   Metashape 1.7.3 is still running fine - just the occasional system freeze during depth map generation that I reported to you earlier this year.

Thanks,

I had to revert back to 1.7.3 because 1.7.4 was generating very different geometry, and not for the better in my case.  My quick test of the 1.8 beta shows that whatever weirdness was happening in 1.7.4 seems to be fixed.

Bug Reports / 1.8 beta crashing a lot
« on: September 23, 2021, 06:36:29 PM »
I've had the 1.8 pre-release crash on my about 50% of the time when I've tried building a mesh using the depth map method.  I've been out of the room each time it crashed, so when I walk in I just see the crash reporter dialog.  Therefore, I don't know if it crashed during depth map generation, after it, during mesh building, or what.  But I submitted the crash each time.

It also still locks up my Mac Pro sometimes during depth map generation, but all versions of MetaShape have been doing that, so nothing new there.

Bug Reports / Re: 1.8 beta Cannot Read existing Batch Files
« on: September 23, 2021, 01:27:27 PM »
I'm not sure if this is a bug or just that 1.8 cannot read old batch .xml files by design, but when I attempt to load my existing batch files I get this error message:

In most cases you can just edit the version number in your old xml

Thanks for that advice! I went in and change the version number and now it loads fine.
