General / Re: Disappointing performance results on new MacBook Pro M1 Max

I still get the blobs using that version on my M1 Max.  Therefore, I’m still using the old version before all of that broke.

Hm AFAIK only 1.8 is optimized for Apple Silicon. Maybe try that version and see if it's much faster than 1.7?

Hi Tominoka,

I'm new at all this and I was wondering if you could shed some light on what you would use these exported cameras for in your 3D software? You might give me some ideas for how to use them in my projects.

Thanks!

I have a standard M1 Macbook Pro 13" (not M1 Pro or Max) and one thing I noticed is that generating a mesh from depth maps in 1.8 Beta FINALLY worked for me. I could never get it to work in 1.7 on Windows, the model always came out as a mushy blob.

So it may not be as fast as a desktop but at least it does some things better!

A laptop from 2021 being 20% faster than a DESKTOP from 2013 is a HUGE improvement. Compare it to a 2013 Macbook Pro and then you'll have a fair apples-to-apples comparison!

General / Re: Editing/Exporting Tiled Model in other software
« on: November 02, 2021, 12:41:49 PM »
Hi guys, i have a question. how do you export tiled model to other 3d editing software, like sketchup or 3ds max? i tried exporting in agisoft tiled archive with collada,3ds mesh format but it ended up in error whenever i try to open it in 3ds max or google sketchup.

Exporting in model (not tiled model) worked, either in collada or kmz, but it does not have as many details as the tiled model.

Did you (or anyone) ever figure this out? I'm about to do the same thing and I will report back if I get it working in 3ds.

Where are you getting the impression that Metashape is using only one core? My RTX 3090 shows I think 82 compute units and it appears as one GPU. There will be one check box for each physical GPU in the system, regardless of the number of cores.

General / Re: Can decimate be done just on non detailed areas ?
« on: November 02, 2021, 05:29:13 AM »
Here's what I would do (I'm working towards the same goal):

1) Build dense cloud with as much detail as possible
2) Select the areas that you want to have less detail and assign a class [Ctrl+Shift+C]
3) Generate the mesh one class at a time and set the detail level for each according to your needs.
4) Combine the meshes

There might be other ways of doing this, but this is what I've thought of so far. You can also use Tools>Dense Coud>Classify Points... to automatically classify points based on object type (cars, road, vegetation buildings, etc.) but that's been a bit hit-or-miss for me.

You might also be able to select portions of the finished hi-poly mesh and separate them into their own chunks, then decimate those pieces individually. But I don't know how well it will preserve the edges of the chunks so you might have issues combining them. Someone with more experience (or the patience to test it) would be able to tell you if that would work.

Following! I went to buy the exact laptop you described only for them to be sold out, so I got an M1 Macbook Pro for my wife instead. I'd be very curious to run the same project on the M1 processor to see how it compares to the M1 Pro Max. Would you be willing to share the project files?

Also, try changing this in the Advanced settings under "Miscellaneous": "Enable VBO Support" - and also set the RAM to match your screenshot (43690 MB). I'm surprised it's not more, since you got the 64GB model, but whatever. It's still a ton of VRAM!

I have an RTX 3090 and my screenshot is attached. It definitely sped up the loading and viewing of meshes, but idk if it helps beyond that. Curious if it speeds up anything on your setup.

General / Trouble with Textures
« on: October 25, 2021, 11:37:48 PM »
I'm having trouble with textures. In some areas where the shaded model looks perfect (LEFT), the textures (RIGHT) are all messed up.

Am I doing something wrong? I'm generating the textures from the images. Should I use the dense cloud instead?

Hi Alexey,

I'm using the latest version of 1.7 Professional. It seems that the project file itself had some problems or became partially corrupt because I started over in a new project file and everything seems to be working as expected.

I'm still having alignment issues at times, and that's likely contributing to a problem with texture generation, but I think that is a PEBKAC error more than anything!

I'll post more specific requests for help with alignment issues in a separate thread.

FYI - I think the project file became corrupt when I tried to connect to Agisoft Cloud and upload photos so I could process the project in the cloud. I remember it froze during that process and the issues started right after that. Not sure what caused it to freeze (perhaps too many photos? It was ~260 GB I believe).

Hi all,

I'm doing some experimentation with the pro version demo and I was curious if anyone has done something similar? Would be great to learn what works and doesn't from someone more experienced.

I'm testing out a process for making tracks for a driving simulator (Assetto Corsa) using a combination of Google Street View 360 panoramas and aerial shots exported from Google Earth Studio.

The best street view images are 133MP so there's a lot of data to work with, but the downside is that the photos are captured kinda far apart, so I am using the aerial images to sorta "fill in the gaps" and also to capture the surrounding area that is not viewable from the road.

It's actually working very well, and I'm starting to tinker with different texture settings so I have as much detail on the road as possible.

One thing I'm struggling with that I'd love advice on:

When a photo doesn't align automatically, I can't seem to do anything to force it to align. Sometimes a whole group of photos won't align, even though it seems like they should, and I don't know what to do with them at that point.

All of the images have GPS coordinates and altitude in the EXIF. The street view panos also have yaw data. I set the coordinates to match Google Earth (WGS 84 + EGM96 height), and everything shows up on the map in the exact right location, so can I use this to help guide the software to align certain photos? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Bug Reports / RESOLVED - Issues with project
« on: October 14, 2021, 10:03:10 PM »
Hi all,

I am using the trial of Metashape Professional and while the results are impressive (when it works), I have encountered numerous bugs and problems that are extremely disappointing considering this is $3500 software.

The current showstopper is an issue when generating a mesh. The decimation seems to never complete, it gets stuck at 80%.

I searched and other people with this problem likely did not have enough RAM to complete the job, but my PC has 128GB of RAM so that's probably not the issue. What's worse is that Metashape is currently using only 3,350 MB of RAM so there is clearly a problem in the software and not in my RAM capacity.

I will try to make the mesh with decimation disabled so I can at least move forward with this project, but this is really disappointing especially on top of the other problems I've had (point clouds and models disappearing when I try to reset the view, changes to coordinate system making everything disappear, color correction making all my images bright red with no way to undo the damage, images that should align are not aligning, etc.)

Is this software really that bad or am I just having an unusual amount of issues?

Can anyone suggest a better program that will accept 360 spherical images?

Most importantly, how can I fix this problem with decimation?
