Face and Body Scanning / Re: Face scanner - Prototype

That's one crazy looking machine!
I would love to see a video of it working scanning someone too.

Hi Lee,

Was a bit coffee'ed up :o when I posted that, should perhaps read .. I suggested you really should give Photoscan a go, over the outrageously expensive and tedious DI and Scanner Killer systems of the time.

...and when you did and openly talked about the process, many other people learnt and profited from your sharing.

That sharing combined with IMHO a very fairly priced Photoscan has changed many things in many industries and made things possible that before would only have been the preserve of very large budget films/VFX.

Cheers,
Mala

No need to get angry... I was merely agreeing with some other posts here that a lot of the questions are generally the basic ones and these are constantly repeated... the obvious solution to this is to have a pinned FAQ thread like many many other forums have.

I'm not sure if your rant was aimed at me or others, but I would just like to point out that I've been using Photoscan for years for face scanning, it was me that suggested to Lee (Infinite) that he should try the software, the rest is history... the whole reason all these "mini-me" 3D printing companies sprang up in the last few years is due to Lee openly talking about his Photoscan process.
Just to put that in context I have never made a single penny from using Photoscan, i don't offer a scanning service, I design and build hardware.

In regard to people supplying scan services "on the cheap" of course people are going to come along and undercut prices that is the nature of the world we live in.
But professional companies are always willing to pay more for quality and experience, where as you would not return to someone who did a bad job never mind how cheap it was.
In the world I come from we have a saying "You are only as good as your last gig!"

The often repeated questions here are:
What camera should i use ?
what lens ?
What camera settings ?
What lighting ?
How to control multiple cameras ?
How to download from multiple cameras ?
How to solve problem of certain textile/clothings ?

What is wrong with having these in a FAQ thread ?
Of course there could be other FAQ related to the processing side as well.

Cheers,
Mala

What this forum has needed for a long time is a face/body scanning FAQ thread that is permanently pinned at the top of the page...

General / Re: Generating specular maps
« on: March 13, 2014, 02:55:53 PM »
I find this very confusing.... How on earth is crazybump producing a specular map from a single image?
Doesn't make any sense at all to me.

To produce a decent quality accurate specular map of a face for example you need minimum 2 photos of the face evenly lit.
First picture that contains diffuse/ albedo colour and specular information, then a second picture that contains just the diffuse / albedo.
By subtracting the second picture from the first picture you get just the specular information.

The pictures are captured by using polarising filters....

Great work.

Loving the wooden batteries!!

GoZ for Photoscan would be amazing and make it so much easier for all the people now using Photoscan for head or body scanning.
Alexey I hope you're listening!

Face and Body Scanning / Re: Charging 50+ Cameras / Batteries
« on: January 24, 2014, 07:54:37 PM »
Depending on what cameras you have (sorry can't seem to that in this thread)..... it is not a good idea to turn cameras On/Off by simply turning on/off your large 200W power supply.

Most DSLR perform functions when turning on/off by the cameras switch...such as Sensor cleaning..most usually this is storing data about dirt on the sensor and degraded pixels into the cameras memory.

The micro processor in the camera likes to be turned off properly...rather than just suddenly have it's power taken away.

Whilst you might get away with turning on /off "at the wall" a few times,I would not advise this as a long term method.

General / Re: Sony qx-100 suggestion camera for UAV
« on: December 20, 2013, 03:16:12 PM »
I know nothing about scanning with UAVs... my only experience is with scanning people and objects.
I have used kit zoom lens on Canon,Nikon and Samsung and have not had any major problems... I do appreciate that in an Ideal world you would use Prime lens all the time, but this can also have implications for camera position and FOV.

Personally I find these new "Lens Cams " from Sony quite interesting.... unfortunately Sony have done what everyone else has and made it near impossible to connect/control/download with multiple cameras (Not a problem for UAV work I presume!).

Why do all these "WiFi social network/post your every minute to FB!! Cameras) work as being a Hotspot you connect to ?
Why can't it be the other way round ?
The camera should connect to a WiFi hotspot instead of actually being one... surely that way it would be easy to control a multi cam rig...
Sorry off topic there.

I think you should maybe buy one camera to test with AGIsoft.. it is the only way you will know for sure as I don't imagine anyone else has tried that camera with Photoscan yet.... If it doesn't work sell it on Ebay.

Cheers,
mala

edit ...ah well there you go..someone does have experience with this camera !

Face and Body Scanning / Re: Full Body Scanner / aligning of photos
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:00:34 PM »
Well the good thing is they are cheap and if the system scales well you can just keep adding more units.
Would be interesting to try some face scans with the rig as well.
Hope to see some of your meshes from the rig soon :)

When they first mentioned the possible camera module I thought it would be great to have an array of them but possibly with a bigger sensor.
Is the sync working well?  And you have a managed system to download all the images to a file system on one PC?

Could you imagine if there was a networkable PI version of Photoscan, you could then use all the PIs as a "render farm" to help process images to build the mesh!
...in my dreams!

A Raspberry Pi rig ?

Cool, wondered when someone would do this  ;)

Actually a very interesting read, maybe only an early start but good to see someone tackling this problem and looking at GPU implementation.

Thanks for posting.

Face and Body Scanning / Re: cross-polarization
« on: October 27, 2013, 11:07:36 PM »
What polarising filters are you using, circular or linear?
Also worth pointing out that that cheap films do not polarise 100% of transmitted light
Remember that any light that does not pass through filter, most are 40% transmission max, will be reflected off the film and bounce around your studio as un polarised light...with something as powerful as a studio strobe this is very likely to happen.

It is possible to use polarising filters for face and body scanning effectively.
Google ICT lightstage and read their papers and also patents for further details.

It looks like an interesting camera, certainly in terms of cost.

Though if you are intending to build a full body capture rig from a large number of these cameras, it might get a bit difficult.

As far as I know there is no software that can download images from multiple Sony cameras.
It does not appear to have a remote release socket or IR remote.
