you can import chunks from another project using the file->append function

I've also requested a larger trackball.

I spent ages trying to find this old post of mine, to link to it from your request, and you'd already found it!

Maybe this christmas will be the one!

could be that you built mesh using depth maps as source, rather than dense cloud?

If you did 'tools->build tie points' with the original 5 aligned images, would that also regenerate the key points?

If so, then you could enable 'keep key points', then 'build tie points' thus keeping the existing alignment and getting the key points back, and then add and align the 6th image without affecting/losing anything (except time!).

UTM coordinates should be in degrees shouldn't they? Rather than eastings/northings in meters.

Just a guess but if you translate the Easting 3127.###m and Northing 5220.###m to 31.27°W and 52.20°N it puts you somewhere near the intersection of Charlie Gibbs fracture zone and mid-atlantic ridge.

If that's where you are surveying then it would probably help to use the appropriate coordinate system in metashape.

Hello,

If you are using version 1.7.3, have you checked, if Enabled column in the Photos pane (in Detailed view mode) is what you need to select only enabled/disabled cameras?
Wonderful, thank you!

How it could have been generated?

It could have been generated if you have insufficient photos looking directly into those bottom 'bays' from close to floor level.

The errors are greatest at the top of these 'bays' which are the parts that wouldn't get photographed if you didn't get down low enough, or didn't maintain your density of images at this level.

General / Re: Building texture from Orthomosaic
« on: July 07, 2021, 10:45:50 PM »
Is it possible the create textures for my mesh from the orthomosaic?
What I've done recently is generate my texture using orthophoto mapping mode, and then use photoshop to open the texture file and replace it with my orthomosaic.

It may have been a happy accident that the orthophoto mapping uv map was perfectly aligned with my surface (which was perfectly flat in this case) and thus trivial to replace it with the orthomosaic (just a bit of rotation needed).

I hadn't really given it much thought until now! I guess if it hadn't been so well aligned then probably the perspective warp tool in photoshop would have got me out of trouble.

You can also build texture at low resolution and then upscale in photoshop to substitute a higher resolution orthomosaic.

I don't fully understand why the texture and orthomosaic were so vastly different in appearance though. The 'texture' had a nicer general appearance, but suffered with some terrible and weird artefacts on zooming in. The orthomosaic looked pretty nasty zoomed out, but zooming in the details were all there which was the main thing.

This was a large metallic 'sculpted' panel photographed close up, with flash, using the wrong focal length and not enough overlap, so metashape did well to get anything usable. The well known competition couldn't even align the images.

+1

(And it'd be nice if this could be a column in the details view of the photos pane too, so it can be used for sorting, so you can easily select from or filter on only the enabled or disabled cameras.)

Sorry, it hadn't occurred to me that polygon size would be so closely correlated with vertex quality, but I guess it makes sense in a way.

I've found this very unrefined and dirty way to filter the mesh by confidence using meshlab...

If you export your model as PLY then you get the option to also export vertex confidence values. Make sure you also uncheck binary encoding.

There's probably a more elegant way to do this, but if you open your exported PLY file in a text editor you'll see a list of vertex property names near the top, with 'confidence' being the last one. Replace the word 'confidence' with the word 'quality' and save the file.

Open the file in meshlab, and select Filters -> Selection -> Conditional Vertex Selection.

In the 'boolean function' text box type something like (q < 5) and hit preview.

q = quality (confidence) so fiddle with the number until you are happy with which vertices have been selected. You have to tab away from the text box to update the preview.

Press Apply
Press Close
Select Filter -> Selection -> Delete selected vertices

They are gone!

General / Re: How to add more points to already aligned images ?
« on: June 09, 2021, 03:03:48 PM »
I believe that Tools -> Tie Points -> Build Point Cloud... will do this.

It shouldn't modify the alignment at all, so you would need to 'Optimize' afterwards if you wanted to improve the alignment based on the newly found points.

I have noticed that now and again (including right now), although I didn't make the connection to depth maps.

And it reminded me of another issue I have with the thumbnails which is that they are not updated after colour correction, and I have to fully open every image to find out which ones got messed up by it; there's almost always one or two, especially if I enable white balance correction.

I agree to the extent that it's a little annoying when I want to rotate the model, or rotate or resize the region.

These are the only three of those tools that I use and none of them are the default so always have to click the little down arrow. It's made worse by the fact that I'm usually operating over a VNC viewer which renders my mouse cursor as a tiny dot rather than a pointer, so the precise place to click is even harder to find, but that's a problem for our IT department to figure out!

But it's not so annoying that I've made the effort yet to see if I can assign hotkeys to those tools, which would be a better solution for me anyway.

*edit* oh yeah and the selection tools, I almost always want the freehand tool rather than the rectangle one!
