General / Re: build mesh from depth maps vs dense cloud

Sorry, it hadn't occurred to me that polygon size would be so closely correlated with vertex quality, but I guess it makes sense in a way.

I've found this very unrefined and dirty way to filter the mesh by confidence using meshlab...

If you export your model as PLY then you get the option to also export vertex confidence values. Make sure you also uncheck binary encoding.

There's probably a more elegant way to do this, but if you open your exported PLY file in a text editor you'll see a list of vertex property names near the top, with 'confidence' being the last one. Replace the word 'confidence' with the word 'quality' and save the file.

Open the file in meshlab, and select Filters -> Selection -> Conditional Vertex Selection.

In the 'boolean function' text box type something like (q < 5) and hit preview.

q = quality (confidence) so fiddle with the number until you are happy with which vertices have been selected. You have to tab away from the text box to update the preview.

Press Apply
Press Close
Select Filter -> Selection -> Delete selected vertices

They are gone!

General / Re: How to add more points to already aligned images ?
« on: June 09, 2021, 03:03:48 PM »
I believe that Tools -> Tie Points -> Build Point Cloud... will do this.

It shouldn't modify the alignment at all, so you would need to 'Optimize' afterwards if you wanted to improve the alignment based on the newly found points.

General / Re: Thumbnails take ages to load once processed

I have noticed that now and again (including right now), although I didn't make the connection to depth maps.

And it reminded me of another issue I have with the thumbnails which is that they are not updated after colour correction, and I have to fully open every image to find out which ones got messed up by it; there's almost always one or two, especially if I enable white balance correction.

Feature Requests / Re: UI Suggestion - Buttons vs Dropdowns

I agree to the extent that it's a little annoying when I want to rotate the model, or rotate or resize the region.

These are the only three of those tools that I use and none of them are the default so always have to click the little down arrow. It's made worse by the fact that I'm usually operating over a VNC viewer which renders my mouse cursor as a tiny dot rather than a pointer, so the precise place to click is even harder to find, but that's a problem for our IT department to figure out!

But it's not so annoying that I've made the effort yet to see if I can assign hotkeys to those tools, which would be a better solution for me anyway.

*edit* oh yeah and the selection tools, I almost always want the freehand tool rather than the rectangle one!

Bug Reports / Re: Windows 10 high contrast mode
« on: March 01, 2021, 01:36:23 PM »
It might be important to someone, but it doesn't affect me thankfully!

I also tried on my desktop with GTX 1080s, and high contrast mode does work as expected, including inverting the colours of the GUI, so it must just be related to my laptop (Dell Precision M4800).

I am using the Metashape classic theme, see attached (this is from my desktop where it works).

In Dark or Light modes there was no effect to the display on my desktop, as you discovered.

On my laptop there was also no affect to the display, with the different themes, except that it became 'unresponsive'. However, switching out of high contrast mode the display did update again, showing that my clicking had had some effect (the trackball was rotated for example).

Bug Reports / Windows 10 high contrast mode
« on: February 26, 2021, 02:17:34 PM »
Hi there,

I was working in 'high contrast mode' as I'd spent too long staring at a bright white spreadsheet, and this mode makes the spreadsheet black, which really helped.

Just out of interest I tried to see how Metashape would look in high contrast mode, but found that I either get a blank white screen if I start it in high contrast mode, or a completely unresponsive screen if I switch to high contrast while it is running.

The default keys for toggling high contrast mode are LEFT SHIFT + LEFT ALT + PRTSCN, fyi.

Metashape Pro 1.7.1 build 11979 64 bit
Windows 10 Pro v2004 build 19041.804
Nvidia Quadro K1100M v25.21.14.2632

Will the 'change path' feature do what you need?

It should allow you to switch the source images for new ones, so long as they have the same resolution, and it's only 'values' that have changed and not the 'geometry' i.e. distortion correction etc.

I thought that this was what the 'Enable ghosting filter' option was supposed to do. I haven't tried it though.

3. Content awareness. In a more advanced approach, the software should be able to skip photos with pixels that are inconsistent between overlapping photos. That would help to remove moving vehicles, for example. Actually I wonder IF Such smart filter could not be used during orthomosaic creation as well to automatically remove people, cars, birds, branches, etc.

General / Re: merging chuncks without markers
« on: February 04, 2021, 08:55:44 PM »
Assuming (from peeking at previous posts) that you have the professional version of metashape, you can add markers without coordinates to align the chunks, if you can see common features in at least two aligned photos in each chunk.

If you can't, then that would explain why the photos don't align, and I don't see any other 'workaround' as it implies that there is no overlap between the chunks, or no way to match overlapping areas if there are any.

If you can, then you need to add at least 3 well distributed markers to each pair of chunks, with the same names in each chunk, and use the marker based option for aligning chunks.

General / Re: Valid matches marked as invalid
« on: January 13, 2021, 01:01:53 PM »
Ah I guess it was this bit:

A set of key points can only be 'used' to align an image if they are matched in two other aligned images.

but 'can' only be used, and 'will' only be used are not the same. So I will admit my explanation was incomplete  ;D

I think your idea is not correct  Actually invalid points are points matched in 2 photos or more but not accepted during aligning process for not satisfying certain threshold (far,inaccurate,invisible,weak,,..)

I'm not sure that what you're saying and what I'm saying are mutually exclusive.

I agree that points that 'make it' to the invalid matches list will necessarily exist in at least two photos. If they didn't, they wouldn't be considered for alignment at all and therefore not be considered to be valid or invalid, just ignored completely (except for where you choose to retain key points, in which case they live to fight another day).

I'm not sure that I previously said anything to contradict that. If I did, then I admit that it was not correct!

This is my theory:

I think the terms 'valid' and 'invalid' might be misleading. I think they more likely should be named 'used' and 'unused'.

A set of key points can only be 'used' to align an image if they are matched in two other aligned images.

See here for the full thread which will make it make more sense.
