Bug Reports / Re: Mosaic blending with Masks
« on: January 24, 2013, 08:32:10 PM »
Thanks Alexey,

Do you know if there was an older build where this wasn't a problem? I have a few older versions I could try as I'm sure this has worked in the past (or maybe i just got lucky...)

Looking forward to future releases, and good luck with the work on the fix!

Failing a fix to the automatic mosaic creation, manual control over the mosaic (http://www.agisoft.ru/forum/index.php?topic=862.0) would be a great feature I would make a lot of use of.

Keep up the brilliant work!

Face and Body Scanning / Re: Portrait rig experimentation.

Hi Magnus and Infinite,

Are the issues you describe with the full frame sensor just specific to this application i.e. close range/body scanning?

I had always been under the impression that the larger sensor would be advantageous for photogrammetric applications, in my case 'medium range' - mostly buildings and other large structures.

I had for a while been pushing to upgrade our D7000 (DX) to a D800 (FX) on the assumption that it would be an improvement!

OK I shall put a link in the bug reports section...

Thanks!

Bug Reports / Mosaic blending with Masks
« on: January 23, 2013, 04:27:00 PM »
I am using pscan pro 0.9 1586 and finding that i get black areas when i build my texture using mosaic mode.

The black areas correspond to areas that have been masked out in some photos, even though there is coverage in other photos.

When i use average blending there are no black areas.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or result of me not understanding whats going on! The mesh was manipulated slightly in blender.

It makes no difference which mapping mode i use.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks!

That's really nice!

Did you have to battle to control the difference in light levels between the window areas and the dark recesses?

« on: December 04, 2012, 09:03:07 PM »
I have managed to align images of a very similar ceiling to this so if the photos are good it could be possible.

1. Try masking out the areas where the detected points are unhelpfully clustered to force detection into the otherwise bland shadowy area. I.e mask out the edges of the ceiling i.e. coving/cornice which is linearly uniform.

2. Break the photos into small chunks that will align, then worry about aligning the chunks.

As you can see attached, for this project I managed to align all 111 photos in a single chunk, but I did have to mask out all the data that would normally be useful for alignment around the edges to force it to work on the plain areas. I think that's how it works...

You could do this in Meshlab (meshlab.sourceforge.net) using the orthogonal views and the snapshot function. You can increase the screen multplier to get higher resolution but you can't set a specific px/mm scale.

Alternatively use an orthographic camera and render an ambient occlusion pass in Blender (www.blender.org).

Neither of these softwares are particularly intuitive the first time you look at them though, probably Meshlab is the best one to start with. Both are free!

That's very nice, would have been even better to be there to see it! Great work!

Sorry i don't mean append chunks, rather click and drag the masked photos into a single chunk for alignment.

If there is not enough overlap then you won't be able to align the two halves in photoscan.

It sounds like the background is causing you problems, and this can be masked out fairly effectively using the mask from model function under tools.

Align half of the photos where the background is consistent, then generate geometry, and then import mask from the model (Tools -> Imprt -> Masks - From model and active chunk only)

Then create another chunk with the other half of photos, and do the same.

Then your background should be more or less masked out in all photos, so you have the option to align chunks, or append the chunks into one and try aligning all photos together.

But as I said if you dont have enough overlap between the two halves then it won't work anyway.

Feature Requests / Re: Cut and trim by masks
« on: November 26, 2012, 12:34:38 PM »
Slight variation on the same theme, but that does not rely on having great masks (mine are rarely precise enough for this!)

After building geometry, using the freeform (or other) selection tool to manually select an ugly blob, and then shift-del to delete and automatically fill the hole, or ctrl-delete to delete and open a dialog box (or not) for filing the hole taking into account surrounding geometry curvature.

Either using this technique or those above will be limited when you can see correct geometry behind the area you are trying to cut/trim. To resolve this you would need to implement a manipulable 'editing limit box' that restricted any trimming to geometry within it.

But maybe this is getting too far into mesh cleaning and far away from 3d photo reconstruction?

It is just a very blunt approach to background removal!

I am not sure if the option exists in Photoscan Standard but in Pro you can import masks from the existing geometry using Tools->Import->Masks... then select "Active Chunk" and "From Model".

If your background is causing problems with your alignment or reconstruction, or you want to force photoscan to find more matches on your subject (guessing that's how it works) you can do a very quick geometry construction, after aligning images as well as you can, and use that geometry to quickly mask out most of the background.

You may need to scan through the photos after you imported the mask to see if any were incorrectly aligned in which case you will need to edit the mask manually.

Now you can align the images again, using the mask constraint, and the masked out background will no longer be taken into account when aligning.

I haven't done any tests yet to confirm whether this increases workflow speed or quality but it did help me align some photos i took of a friend who couldn't stand still... photoscan was aligning images based on the static background because my friend was swaying too much. quickly masked out the background using this approach and the photos aligned much better on his swaying body and i was able to do a reconstruction, although it was still awful... no substitute for a 50 camera rig!

Easy way to mask 100s of images is to align images as well as possible, set bounding box and build geometry on area of interest at very low quality i.e. pointcloud method or low/lowest using smooth method. Once very approximate geometry is built you can import mask using model and then repeat the whole process refining the mask with each iteration.

Feature Requests / Re: Weighted Average Texture Blending Mode
« on: July 25, 2012, 03:35:28 PM »
Actually I might try just masking out the flash area... too simple... doh

Edit: It didn't help greatly, I think the mottled effect is more down to general changes in the lighting, rather than the flash alone.

Mosaic mode creates a lovely image and the 'joins' are invisible, it's quite amazing.

Unfortunately in this case the 'photographer' used the flash for every image so each photo has a big bright spot in the middle, which in mosaic mode becomes quite obvious. Average mode at least reduces this by blending it with 'less flashed' areas.

So I guess my request is quite specific in that sense, and probably I should just make more effort to get better photographs to work with!

In this case (and most cases) I am working 6000 miles from the object in question and have to send other people to get the photos... hopefully i will get to travel out there myself soon!
