General / Re: Using physical markers in "background" to improve alignment
« on: September 25, 2014, 10:44:48 PM »
For the professional version it should go like this (I don't own it):

1. align images for every rotation (around one axis, you have done this)
2. mask the newspaper out with masks (or edit the model later see step 4)
3. build model for every rotation in a separate chunk
4. edit the model in every chunk, so that all uninteresting parts are erased
5. set markers on identical points in every chunk
6. align chunks with the help of the markers
7. merge chunks

For the Standard version you could try to align the chunks without markers but with masking all newspaper out (step 6).

You can find a very detailed discription for Paleontology in: "PHOTOGRAMMETRY IN PALEONTOLOGY – A PRACTICAL GUIDE" http://www.jpaleontologicaltechniques.org/pasta3/JPT%20N12/Pdf/JPT_n012_Jul.pdf

General / Re: Scaling consistency?
« on: May 30, 2014, 06:37:02 PM »
Hello marcel,

you can do it with the standard version and a third party program like Meshlab as well, but not as acurate as in PhotoScan (PhotScan Professional/Education is more acurate because you can measure your distance in photos and not in the mesh.):

1. Add a stick or a ruler with a known distance to your subject
2. Process as normal in PhotoScan
3. Export your ready processed mesh

In Meshlab:

1. Load your mesh in Meshlab
2. Measure the ruler/stick with the measure tool (measuring tape - symbol). You get your distance in model system.
3. Calculate the scale (known distance divided by measured distance)
4. In Meshlab go to filters "Normales, Curvatures and Orientation" then "Transform: Scale"
5. Put in your scale in the fields for Y, X and Z hit "Apply" and "Close"
6. Control the scale by measuring the known distance again.
6. Save your scaled mesh.

Cheers,

Karsten

In this paper "Line-based 3D Reconstruction of Wiry Objects" by M. Hofer, A. Wendel and H. Bischof (TU Graz, Austria) it is shown, how it could be possible to reconstruct wiry objects like power pylons or scaffolds from image sequences: https://online.tugraz.at/tug_online/voe_main2.getVollText?pDocumentNr=296228&pCurrPk=70326
This would be very nice to have in PhotoScan too  ;).

Hello Jokeri,

do you mean with
Quote
All I'm missing is the full version of the program :(
the professional version of Agisoft PhotoScan?

You don't need it for your engine, you can also do it with the standard version and scale your results for example with the free Meshlab afterwards ;).

As Matt suggested
Quote
You will probably need to coat it with something dull to get the photo matching to work.
use for example some Anti Flare / Dullingspray. You can also improve the photos/results further by projecting some noise pattern on your dull object.

Hi navalguijo,

I meant the mesh editing too (windows of the bunker), how do you do it?.

Well done! Which software do you have used in the movie for editing the mesh?

@Wishgranter: No problems with viewing on Windows 7 and firefox or opera.

I see three advantages to project a pattern with a flash in comparison to a projector:

1. higher portability (no power cable, smaller, lighter, ...)
2. brighter
3. higher resolution of slides -> higher resolution of the calculated geometry

The ratio between camera stereo base and distance to the object should be in the range of 1:5 to 1:10 for good stereo model.

Another option for focus stacking is to use Magic Lantern for Canon DSLR's or CHDK/SDM for Canon's point and shoot cameras together with one of the free image stacker (Enblend, Tufuse, Picolay, ...) .

Hi FoodMan,

yes, I have the stable release v2.3 from 2012 on my Canon 60D, really stable, no crashes, funny new features and definitively worth a try.

Camera Calibration / Re: Undistort Photos

Yes and aligning is time consuming too. Or the possibility to undistort images within Photoscan based on camera calibration results without prior aligning.

Thanks!

Ludwig, Cotopaxi,

nice if you post the coordinates of the GCP's, so we can try (the original offer to test it in Graticule 3D came from Ralph btw., but Graticule 3D is really funny - so no problem to test it for you or you do it by yourselve)!

Btw. snow is one of the worst subjects to scan in near makro mode when you can see the crystals, the far away the better. I have tried it only once.

Good luck with testing the suggestions!

Karsten

Ralph,

Yes I also think that the errors given in the screenshot show the dicrepancy to the model that all GCP's have the same z value (zero). Thats why I thought it isn't right to set them all to zero, because they couldn't have the same value. I think Photoscan try to find the best solution for the given (wrong) GCP's.

Karsten

Hello Ludwig,

if I understand you right, you want an ortogonal photo of the area of slope. So all your GCP's can't have a  z-value equal to zero, which means a perfect plane. I think you should at first do a plane fitting for your GCP's for example with "Graticule 3D" http://derletztekick.com/software/formanalyse. Then you get the right z values, which are slightly different to zero. These values should be used in Photoscan.

Regards,

Karsten
