If you happen to be using Mission Planner for your geotagging, the current version has a bug which can cause this.  Instead of tagging the Z values with real world altitudes, it is tagging with flight height above takeoff.

Could you walk us through how orthomosaic seam line editing works?

THanks

Hallelujah!

Thank you.

The camera uses the GPS for its altitude values which are known to vary wildly. The autopilot uses a barometer for its Z vales.  The barometer can be relatively acurate to about 30 cm. You can purchase a data logger that uses your GPS values for X and Y but uses its own barometer for Z values.

Hope that helps. -Mark

Thanks Karsten. What I do to minimize reshooting is that I overshoot.  For this project I ended up shooting everything about four times.  Processing this much data in the field is problematic.  Most of the processing ends up happening when I get back.  A reshoot would involve traveling thousands of mines and a lot of cash.  In this particular model, one side of the mound was very sparsely mapped.  The angle was just too steep to safely walk with a pole (and poisonous snakes).

The new fisheye support is amazing.  We collected a bunch of data in Peru a while back that was barely useable.  After processing it with the new settings we had greatly improved results.

As for the texture, I typically break the model into several seamlessly OBJs and render a texture of 29k x 29k.  Yes, it chokes my computer but works.

Take care,

Mark

Thanks Alexey.  That is correct.  I used about 1,800 images on that work  On other ground based projects I've used more than 4,500 images.  You just have to be creative about the use of chunks.  The most difficult part is actually thinking the image collection through and understand one's camera and lenses.

Hi Alexey, I sent a detailed email with my workflow and why rotating a model with a ground control is important.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Alexey, I'm using actual ground control points.  After the object is scaled using ground control, I rotate the object for best DEM extraction angle.  I'm not doing this with aerial photography (although it can be useful there as well).  I can email you and example, if that'll help.

Thanks,

Mark

In the current stable version of Photoscan Pro, you can "rotate object" on model that has ground control.  In the new beta, you can not rotate objects that have ground control.

I often assign arbitrary ground control to an object to establish scale and then rotate the object so it is in the proper orientation.  Would you please consider adding "rotate object" back as on option in future versions of PhotoScan?

Thanks

Chrisd, as Karsten says, this does work.  You can find a tutorial here:  https://vimeo.com/25071366

About 6 minutes in is where you need to pay extra attention.

Cheers!

Believe it or not, people were trying to do this before Photoscan.  If you aren't familiar with Josh Harle's work, give it a look.  He is brilliant:  https://vimeo.com/15096881

I do agree with the sentiment from everyone regarding 3D Bean.

Meshlab can bake the color data from a point or polygon to a texture using the PLY format.

My issue turned out to be a mistake on my part.  I downloaded the standard version of Photoscan by accident.  Sorry for my confusion.
