General / Managing non-aligned photos
« Last post by Sylvain M. on July 07, 2025, 05:29:14 PM »
Hello everyone!

I use Metashape to create orthophotos from aerial drone missions over forests.
Most of the time, I fly a DJI Mavic 3M at an altitude of 120 metres (the maximum regulatory height in Europe), which produces orthophotos at around 4 cm/px. This resolution is more than sufficient for our forestry needs.

However, I sometimes have problems aligning the photos, especially when flying low (60 m) above a dense canopy. This seems normal as the shots look the same and it is difficult to distinguish one tree from another.

However, last week I experienced alignment issues during a flight at 120 m.

No matter how much I adjust the alignment settings, a few photos still don't align.
Could someone who has mastered this step give me some advice?
If automated alignment fails, can you manually enter matching points between the photos?

(Attached are a few screenshots to illustrate the problem and the nature of the photos to be processed.)

Hello Alexey!

Thanks for your response! If I understand correctly, those are actions to be taken once the problem occured. Since we are looking into an automated workflow, would there be some settings we could pre-configure to avoid such errors?

General / Re: Alignment using Reference Preselection

Hi Alexey

In fact the photos are being taken with a hi res camera on an auv.
The auv is programmed to perform transects over a large area of the seabed.  The camera is a voyis observer amd the auv is a teledyne gavia, and a very powerful strobe is also deployed. Photos are all nadiral, taken at between 3 to 6m off the seabed, depending on the specifics of the survey.

So definitely i want to use reference data where I can, I simply wish to understand better how this feature works.

Thanks

John

Python and Java API / Re: API 1.8.4 and server depreciation date?
« Last post by Octave A. on July 07, 2025, 03:03:03 PM »
Thanks for you answer Alexey, just to clarify I'm using a floating license in my company, and I think that in a previous exchange by email someone from Metashape told me that the license server for version 1.x was due to sunset and so I would have to upgrade my pipeline to version 2.x as well as the license server

So I just want to confirm whether that's true and if yes, if there's a planned expiration date

The pipeline is deployed on AWS Batch so I'm not able to register the key manually because it would then get locked if the application crashes

Hello jrh87,

You can use Matching Graph feature to check, how well are those alignment parts are connected.

For fixing the problem I would suggest at first to reset alignment for one part and then run Align Selected Cameras for it. If it doesn't help, you can try adding a few markers with projections defined on the images from both sub-sets.

Hello Octave,

If you have a license activated via 1.x version of Metashape Professional, you can continue using older version of the application (including stand-alone Python module) on that computer.

Hello,

I was wondering when the Python API v 1.8.4 and the associated Metashape server will be sunset?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Octave

General / Re: Double Sony ILX-LR1
« Last post by Darko on July 07, 2025, 10:27:02 AM »
Hello guys, thak you for your previous comments, it helped me a lot.

I did it. The project is successfully finished, and the results are perfect. I have used two Sony ILX-LR1 cameras positioned in front of each other, hinged on a single two-axis gimbal.  Each camera has been leaned 15 degrees left and right from the nadir point. I have used 50mm Zeiss Loxia lenses with the aperture set to 8, and the exposure time has been set to 1/1250. It's all been set to manual, but the ISO setting was Auto. The lens has been taped so the rings could not be rotated. It all returned fine and sharp pictures that were good for the Agi alignment procedure. Since the exposure was taken by the external timer for both cameras simultaneously, only one event was recorded for the camera pair. Some problems did appear since cameras didn't have the same number of photos (a few only) in each flight for an unknown reason. That's been solved by time comparison taken from the EXIF and events.
I have flown 700m AGL, and the flight speed was about 35-45m/s, the exposure timer was set to 1.6 sec, which gave a good overlap of 70-80%. Ground resolution was about 5cm, and the adjustment gave me errors in mm. The 3D model in TLS came out just perfect.

General / Unmatched reconstruction

Hi,

I am trying to create a 3D model from aerial images. The facade has some trees covering it and, thus, for some areas, the overlapping may be a bit poor. When I push the images to Metashape, the reconstruction returns 2 different misaligned areas (see image below). Is there any issue to fix that? Even if poor overlap may be the issue behind this, other software tools out there are able to consistently generate a good 3D model for the exact same input data, so I would expect Metashape to simiarly overcome this.

Thanks!

General / Re: Underwater Photogrammetry with GoPro Hero 12

Hi again guys !!

A year later, I am deploying an ROV with 2 GoPros. I will go and try the same spot.

I will use timelapse. And I will place a scale bar underwater and test to get precise results.

Do you have any recommendations about GoPro settings?

Or how can I do best with Agisoft?

Thanks,
Best regards
