How to work with images, some of which are not Referenced?
« on: December 17, 2018, 06:56:34 PM »
Dear all,

I have taken about 500 continuous images of a river bed, using a DJI phantom 4 pro.

I am now realizing that around 100 images in the middle of the river segment were not saved with coordinates, so I have most of my photos referenced, but a substantial amount left not referenced.

(1) Is there any way to align the photos and generate a 3D model out of the Whole set of images with, say, WGS84 reference system?
or
(2) do I have to change the reference to local coordinates?
(3) Is there any way to create photo alignment with a referenced coordinate system?

Thanks and best,
Ron

Hello Ron,

If you have the cameras in the chunk some of which do not have any coordinate information, you can still run alignment with Reference pre-selection enabled, the cameras without the coordinate information will be matched with every other image (or according to the Generic preselection, if this option is enabled). The final alignment will be referenced based on the checked on instances in the Reference pane.

But if the images corresponding to the camera location without the coordinate data contain only water bodies, the matching for such images might fail due to the lack of the tie points detected.

Hi Alexey,

Thank you for your answer.

Do you mean enabling the pre-selection in the Photo Alignment options? (see screenshot).

If so - I did check it and there are around 100 photos not aligned.

Please let me know if this is what you mean.

Best,
Ron

Hello Ron,

You can look through View Matches dialog to check if there are any matching points found between the not aligned images and photos from the aligned sub-set.
