We are in the process of purchasing a new PC to use almost exclusively for Photoscan. We recently pruchased an Alienware Area 51 R5 with the following specs...

I9-7900X (10 core @ 3.3Ghz)
2x GTX 1080 in SLI
64GB RAM

We have been having issues with this build crashing constantly and are in the process of returning it as it is hardware related.

What we do primarily is photosets of 200-1000 and we want to produce the highest resolution models and orthomosaics possible.

My biggest question is which CPU line to go with?

Basically what will Photoscan utilize the most? We will be utilizing at least 2 GTX 1080s in SLI (or equivalent Quadro) in any configuration we go with.

Highest Single Core clock speed? (i9-9900K for example)
More Cores? (i9-7920X for example)
Most Possible RAM? (xeon for example)

This is an old post from 2016. It now supports it via CUDA based on those benchmarks.

Hello nlombardo896,

SLI connection is not necessary, it is related to the visualization and wouldn't help the processing. But you can still benefit from multiple GPUs. Number of CUDA cores (or shader processor units for AMD cards) will influence on the processing performance. The additional amount of GPU VRAM will improve the performance of the depth maps based mesh and tiled model generation as well as photoconsistent mesh refinement operation.

For CPU we still recommend to prefer higher CPU frequency (at least 3.2 GHz) with 6-12 CPU cores.
