What is depth map?

I understand that using the depth map as the source would be resolved the error
that occured when I create a model using the huge number of dense cloud points.
But I do not know what the depth map is exactly.
I am curious about the concept and wonder if it can be seen in metashape.

To give you a basic idea of the concept of depth map:
(in photogrammetry it is calculated by disparity from stereo - same object change its position in dependence from its distance to camera in two or more photos)
